Bad, Chelsea, and Homeless: The Telegraph @Telegraph Follow Former rough sleeper Ed Sheeran wins permission for "anti-homeless" gates outside £8m London home Former rough sleeper Ed Sheeran wins permission for "anti-homeless" gates.. Pop superstar Ed Sheeran, who spent nights sleeping rough on the streets of London early in his career, has won planning permission to install "anti-homeless" r... telegraph.co.uk feminismisahatemovement: holybucketbatman: fuck-ler: capatalismnt: Please don’t pay for his music. also don’t listen to it, it’s extremely bad He’s wanting to do this to his home: He submitted the proposal to the Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council and the plan was rejected because the proposed four-foot-high railings (fence) and simple cast iron gate (which was chosen purely privacy and security for the front of the home) were considered “too domestic” looking for the former industrial area. The council gave Sheeran a list of options for privacy “railings”, and after changing the proposal Sheeran was given permission that was more in line with the neighbourhood, which is in a conservation area. A direct quote from Sheeran states: “Dear Natalie Edwards from The Sun newspaper. Your story is bollocks, I have done lots of work in the past for Crisis and Shelter and would never build railings outside my home for that reason. The reason was to keep the paps that you employ from being on my doorstep. Have a good day.” this comment has been substantiated by the local police and security companies that Sheeran and his neighbours have had to contact previously when paparazzi have been taking photographs not only of Sheeran’s house but inside his windows, and constantly knocking on his door and yelling outside his house. Think about this for a moment, a guy bought a house and fixed it up, he was trying to gain some privacy by asking for a simple fence and gate to indicate the property line and gain some distance from the paps, - which the police and council said was fine - and the newspapers who can no longer use these ill-gotten photos and are probably pissed have managed to spin this story to make it seem that this guy (whether you like his music or not), is an asshole and is anti-homeless. And you’re all eating this shit up and believing the newspapers, even though the Sun and Telegraph are well known across the UK for making shit up and lying. smh. These days you have to fact-check 97% of newspaper articles as much as reddit trolls.

Bodies , Clothes, and Curving: such-justice-wow: my-little-ninja: sealpremacy: ariaste: girljanitor: bashi-bazouk: peppercyanide: sisterwolf: via I never even c wow How did they get away with that AH I LOVE THIS What do you mean how did they get away with it? History isn’t one straight line progressing towards a liberal society. Look how much Americans attitudes have changed between 1980 and today. 1980 was the first time most very religious people voted, they abstained before that at the behest of their churches. Now they dictate policy at every election. In my family photo album there are pictures from the 20s of a woman called ‘uncle bob’. She dressed in men’s clothing, and had a ‘companion’. This was a rough industrial town, they were working class, nobody cared. It was her business. This is why politics is important - the moment you think everything is better today than it was in the past, you let other people take control of the direction society goes in - with you sitting back presuming we’re going forwards. reblogging for the commentary Also, I just want to point out – look at the lengths of the sleeves on both of them. Look at the curve of her waist. Look at how far the hem of the dress is from the floor. They didn’t just swap clothes with each other for a joke. Those clothes are THEIR OWN – literally made and tailored for their bodies specifically. In that time, buying clothes was INCREDIBLY expensive. An average person might have three or four outfits total. These people ARE a little on the wealthy side (his skirt is silk; her jacket is of clearly fine quality, and her trousers have a crisp crease from ironing), but they still wouldn’t have owned clothes in the quantity and variety that we do today. All of these clothes were a deliberate and intentional investment of a not insignificant amount of cash and time. They wear these clothes regularly. It’s fake tho Its a deviantart fetish pic?!? It’s a damn fine edit though Not really. One glance at the necks and you can pretty much tell it’s shopped. Tumblr is so gullible.

The government settled out of court and openly admitted their wrongdoing as part of the settlement.

I will repeat; the 3D printing and manufacture of firearms was never illegal in the US, only the international distribution of the files themselves. Even the distribution of the files within US borders and possession of the files themselves are all and were all legal.

I have no issues with people owning guns legally but I don’t think I’m ok with them being able to print a gun.

Would you be willing to explain why?

See, my reasons only make sense to me and the environment I grew up in but I don’t see a reason for an individual to be able to make a gun whenever they want. I know most probably won’t do anything illegal with the gun but I also think the gun might not be safe to use…I have never used a 3D gun or know much about them so they could be perfectly safe to use.

Generally, polymer is a less than stellar material to make a gun out of; that’s why the Liberator is basically a single-shot low-power gun. It’s a proof of concept to show it Can Be Done and thereby challenge the idea of controlling ownership of firearms as a whole.

Since it has been adjudicated that code (and files) are themselves a form of speech; sharing that “speech” in an open forum is, by default, legal and protected.

The issue is, people (for a variety of reasons) already DO make untracable firearms, from 80% lowers, from raw stock, from scrap metal, etc. They’re rarely if ever used in criminal activities, mostly because criminals can just buy an illegal (but legitimately manufactured) firearm either which were illegally purchased themselves, stolen, or gotten thanks to programs like ATFs Fast and Furious and other gunwalking schemes.

as for fears about criminals building untraceable guns, they can almost certainly do it better for cheaper with scrap metal & metal working shop tools. 3d printers arent cheap & polymer guns dont last, as @kasaron has already noted. assuming that they dont just buy black market factory made guns, which are much better quality for much less effort.

& some people have this ridiculously idea that a polymer gun is totally undetectable by security scanners & can be taken ANYWHERE. yeah, they arent, & they still require metal bullets.

Anyone who’s worried about 3d printed guns has NEVER actually had or used a 3d printer. I’ve got 5 of them, ranging from $300 chinese DIY kits to $4500 “prosumer” fully assembled devices, and not a single one can make a gun that I’d be willing to fire with any form of reliability or safety. The tolerances and durability just aren’t there.

The best I could make would be that Liberator up there and the chances that it might just explode in my hand on the first shot aren’t low.

The people who’ve made the fully functional AR lowers aren’t doing it using a 3D printer you can just buy off the shelf, they’d using industrial grade SLA resin printers that START in the 5 figures and if you want the metal additive printers you’re not walking away without spending 6 figures. At that price point they can just buy metal working equipment and make real metal guns by the dozen in the time it would take to print a single gun.

Now: I can’t speak for the future, 3d printers might change, but the direction they’re moving in now does not lend to making guns in the least bit; and stifling the entire branch of technology out of idiotic fear of a possibility is the last thing we need to do.

Also: THERE’S ALREADY OVER 300 MILLION GUNS IN THE US AND IT WOULD BE WAY EASIER AND CHEAPER TO JUST BUY/STEAL ONE OF THOSE THAN PRINT ONE.

This is what I’m saying. The school I work at has a 3-D printer and by no means would it be capable of making a gun you would want to use. Not only would trying to prevent the program from being downloaded be an enormous waste of time, most criminals wouldn’t even be bothered with it when there are much easier ways to get a gun.

Children, Driving, and God: Georgia Mother Crashed Her SUV Into A Pole To Prove To Her Kids That God ls Real @balleralert Georgia Mother Crashed Her SUV Into A Pole To Prove To Her Kids That God Is Real -blogged by @peachkyss ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A Georgia mother crashed her SUV intentionally into a pole to prove to her two children that God is real. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 25-year-old Bakari Warren of Gwinnett County told officers after the crash that she did it on purpose to show her kids that if they believe, God would protect them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to WSBTV, Warren was driving northbound on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard when she crossed into the southbound lanes and drove head-on into a concrete pole. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Warren’s children were asked by the police if they thought the crash was done on purpose. The children responded, “Yeah because she turned. Her eyes was closed and she was saying, blah, blah, blah, ‘I love God. She didn’t want us to just have a car accident. She wanted us to know that God is real." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Police stated that Warren told her children to buckle up their seatbelts just before she began to speed into the pole. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the crash but officers said it could have been a lot worse. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Warren was arrested on a $22,000 bond. She has been charged with two counts of child cruelty. The children are in their grandparent’s care.

Advice, Anaconda, and Asian: STEAMPUNK &other genres thewritingcaf
nimblesnotebook:

Guide to Writing Steampunk

BASICS

Punk Genres: most common genres are in italics

Atomicpunk: Optimistic retro science fiction based on the Space Age. Think The Jetsons.

Biopunk: This genre is about altering genetics and DNA. These stories often take place in the near-future in which humans have been altered or in which human experimentation is common.

Candlepunk: Similar to clockpunk, but darker and with less technology.

Clockpunk: Think Da Vinci’s inventions, but more advanced while. This genre follows the aesthetics and technology of Western civilization during the mid to late middle ages, though sometimes it’s set in the Victorian era.

Cyberpunk: Has advanced technology and often focuses on artificial intelligence and the cyber world. The setting is often near-future rather than far-future. Blade Runner is an example.

Dieselpunk: Based on aesthetics and technology between World War I and World War II, sometimes up until the Cold War.

Decopunk: Ranges from the aesthetics of the 1920’s to the 1950’s. Decopunk aesthetic is heavily based on modernism. Less gritty than dieselpunk.

Elfpunk: Basically urban fantasy, but with common high or epic fantasy creatures put in an urban setting rather than vampires and werewolves.

Nanopunk: Similar to biopunk, but biotechnology is less available and nanotechnology is common.

Sandalpunk: Set in ancient worlds, such as Rome, but with advanced technology.

Splatterpunk: Extremely graphic and contains a lot of gore.

Steampunk: This genre gets its name from the heavy steam-powered technology involved. Aesthetics are based on the Victorian and industrial eras of the Western world, though other cultural elements may be used.

Western Steampunk: Similar to steampunk, but with Western (as in Wild West) aesthetics and settings.

So why are there so many sub genres? For starters, they help agents and publishers get an idea of what they’re in for if you’re going through the traditional publishing route. While bookstores usually just put these genres within science fiction or fantasy, you can still market your book through sub genres to reach a specific group of people who are looking for these genres.

However, there are a lot of sub genres, most of which many have not heard of. If you’ve written one of these genres and intend to publish it, the best would be to put it under another name (with the exception of steampunk, cyberpunk, and biopunk). For example, if you have written a candlepunk story, you can propose it as fantasy, alternate historical fiction, or any other genre it may fit in. While atomicpunk is quite common, it’s not well known by that name. If you have written an atompunk story, the best way to market it would be to call it retro science fiction.

But what’s the difference between punk genres and historical fiction? The technology is a big difference. It’s usually more advanced for the time it’s modeled after.

TECHNOLOGY

The technology is one of the defining aspects of steampunk. America, Ass, and Children: Amy Renee Wasney Monday at 9:31 PM While watching A Christmas Carol tonight, my attention was caught by Bob Cratchit's salary. He makes "15 bob a week." I got curious and looked into inflation and conversion to American money, and if A Christmas Carol happened this year, Bob Cratchit would be making $27,574 per year in American money. If someone works 40 hours a week at the current federal minimum wage, they'll make $15,080. So Bob Cratchit, the epitome of poverty, makes $12,494 more than minimum wage workers (full time) each year. And yet we have people saying minimum wage is fine where it's at.
eruhamster:

thetakubooty:

libertarirynn:

hst3000:

libertarirynn:

This is a total load from beginning to end. First off I’m curious where you did your research because mine showed that Cratchit made about $90 a week or $4,680 a year in today’s money. That’s not even close to your number. Secondly, if minimum wage is so necessary to prevent employers from exploiting their workers, then why don’t all companies pay minimum wage?

A minor point on the conversion. Christmas Carol is far enough back that inflation calculations can get a bit hairy. Some things have been reduced in price dramatically due to automation and industrialization, while others have gotten way more expensive due to (funnily enough) rising labor costs. There’s about five different ways to calculate conversion, and none if them are broadly applicable to global statements.

Oh definitely. Even in my calculations it wasn’t too clean-cut. Plus the modern English shilling is not the same as the shilling in 1843. I don’t want to sound like a cynic and suggest that this person just pulled a random number out of their ass without caring whether not it was accurate because they wanted to make a point but…

what was their point?

Their point was that Bob Cratchit made next to nothing working for Scrooge as it was, and if he got paid more than minimum wage workers today, then we have something very wrong with our society. Which isn’t necessarily wrong.

Also @libertarirynn you’re really asking why minimum wage is necessary? Of course if everyone paid the same minimum wage, then they wouldn’t get people who cared about their jobs and it’d be harder to find skilled workers– both because existing skilled workers would rather work a minimum wage job where they could do less, and because no one would want to bother to learn trades and skills because they’ll get paid the same shit amount anyway.

Minimum wage is necessary to stop people from taking advantage of unskilled labor. Factory work and the like. Do you know what life was like for people before minimum wage was a thing? People were making so little that essentially all they did was work all day, and child labor was popular because the entire family needed to work to make ends meet– mother, father, and children. It was necessary to give people a better standard of living, along with abolishing child labor and making sure people did not end up working 12 hours a day 6, sometimes 7 days a week. Do you not know what Industrial Revolution America was like, before regulations? Child labor, people just asking to ONLY work 40 hours a week, extreme poverty, a lack of regulations that caused tragedies like the fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, etc.

And before you ask why it’s necessary today now that we’ve long since gotten rid of things like child labor laws… It’s for all the people who lose their jobs or are single mothers and are forced to work multiple part time jobs in order to feed their children, because so many jobs that do not pay minimum wage today require so much experience and a degree. Maybe if employers were less selfish with hiring practices and gave more people jobs when they needed them and made it so only teenagers had to work minimum wage, we’d be alright. But that’s not how the world is.

Their point was that Bob Cratchit made next to nothing working for Scrooge as it was, and if he got paid more than minimum wage workers today, then we have something very wrong with our society. Which isn’t necessarily wrong.

Except that it is wrong, because as I just pointed out Bob Crachit was making much, much less than minimum wage.

Also @libertarirynn you’re really asking why minimum wage is necessary?

Yep. And if you haven’t heard me do it before you must be new here.
Wow I literally don’t know what to say. You pointed out the exact reasons the imposition of a minimum wage is unnecessary. Companies are naturally going to offer more if they think it will give them more skilled workers.

Minimum wage is necessary to stop people from taking advantage of unskilled labor. Factory work and the like. Do you know what life was like for people before minimum wage was a thing? Child labor, people just asking to ONLY work 40 hours a week, extreme poverty, a lack of regulations that caused tragedies like the fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, etc.

Most of that has very little to do with minimum wage, nor is it particularly relevant in modernized industry.

We can’t just magically decide to skill is worth more money because of sob stories about single mothers. I know many a single mother who did things like go to night classes to earn a degree or even just learn particular skills to make themselves a valuable employee worth more than minimum wage. And again, most low skill jobs *do* pay above minimum wage, especially to valuable workers. I’ve only been paid minimum wage once in my life, and I’ve worked several low skill jobs. Do you know why this is? Because those jobs are dime a dozen. Wendy’s knows if they pay you just minimum wage and McDonald’s offers you a dollar more, you go work at McDonald’s. Companies being able to set their wages drives competition and therefore wages up. Skill is a commodity to be paid for just like anything else. Flipping burgers simply is not worth $15 an hour and emotional appeals involving child factory workers from 1928 will not change that. I encourage you to check my minimum wage tag for more in-depth information. @redbloodedamerica @libertybill @libertarian-lady
