She was the first black person to purchase property in Boston.*

Very little is known of Zipporahโ€™s life, but she is believed to have been around 25 years old when she purchased the house. ย Her parents were enslaved, but Zipporah was born free as that was the law in Boston at the time. ย Zipporah purchased the house with money her father had inherited from his owner. ย She sold the house in 1699 and signed her initials, displaying literacy at a time when illiteracy was common. ย She was the first black woman to initial a deed in Suffolk County, MA.

A marker was installed on the Rose Kennedy Greenway in 2014 to commemorate Zipporahโ€™s historic achievement. ย

*There is a record of a black man named Sebastian Kane owning property in Dorchester in 1656, but Dorchester was a separate town until 1870.
