 I remember my first eagle ceremony
 when I turned nine. The first eagle you get
 is always declawed, which I always
 thought was pretty inhumane, but it was a
 good way to ease into caring for the birds.
 My eagle (named Baldy, because I wasnt
 a terribly clever child) was already quite
 old when I received him (he was a rescue
 eagle, luckily) but I did have him until I
 was 16. I don't know if I was more excited
 about getting my drivers license that year
 or my new eagle! You should have seen
 the party we had when I got him, too!
 Grilled hot dogs and fire works and
 lemonade... obviously I named my
 beautiful new eagle Freedom. He's too
 big to keep inside anymore, unfortunatey
 but we've got a pretty comfortable roost
 for him on our apartment's balcony
 Ah, yes, the eagle ceremony! My Justice and I
 remember his quite well. (They had just come
 out with telepathic link transplants when I got
 him, which is how I know he remembers it.)
 Our celebration was quite modest, compared
 to Freedom's-apple pie under a cloudless
 summer sky as we signed our Declaration of
 Interdependence. I still have the inked and
 talon-plerced document hanging on my wall.

 I was so scared during my pet eagle ceremony I almost
 threw up. But Stonewall Jackson and I have been best
 friends ever since. My dad and grandfather built a really
 massive roost behind the house for my eagle and my
 sisters' eagles. Stonewall always waits for me when I get
 home from class since schools are getting so over
 protective and strict these days and won't allow eagles
 indoors. Which just goes to show how much we're bubble
 wrapping kids today. Back in the day, if you couldn't handle
 a few stitches because you pissed off the wrong kid's eagle
 you had to just man up and learn your lesson!
 Ooo, I never miss a chance to tell this story! I had a rather
 unusual first eagle ceremony. The traditional giant American flag
 that you wave around to summon your eagle had been severely
 damaged the week prior (a ceremony that had not gone
 according to plan, but the child only suffered minor talon
 wounds. The flag took the brunt of the attack). Anyway, I
 couldn't use the normal flag so we had to search ALL OVER for
 one suitable for eagle summoning. Unfortunately the stripes
 weren't the correct shade of patriotic red so everyone was
 worried an eagle wouldn't show up at all. I had to stand in the
 middle of that wheat field, the wind creating amber waves out of
 it, shaking that flag in the air for over three hours. Everyone was
 just about to give up when suddenly Patriot appeared out of
 nowhere! He came to me so quickly it was like he was
 apologizing for being late. And we've been together ever since.
 Some people think it's excessive to have two eagles. But what can I
 say, I'm a two eagles kind of guy. Well, I can say, "You must be a
 terrorist to call me out over my excesses," but I digress. We don't
 have many open fields around here, so I got Liberty by waving my
 flag atop a decommissioned WWll aircraft carrier. I was kicking a
 couple of boxes of tea into the harbor for good measure, and there
 she was. I loved her so much I repeated the process a year later
 and got young Colbert here. It's hard work, raising two eagles, but I
 have two shoulders, after all. Besides, I know that the secret to
 happy and healthy eagles is plenty of Bud Light.
 Oh man, the eagle ceremony. I was a weird fucking kid, okay, so l was
 totally sure that the eagle ceremony wasn't just going to net me my eagle
 and deepen the mystical bond between a citizen and their country, I
 thought I was going to get to turn into an eagle too. So me and my mom
 and my dad and my little brother are all standing in the old civil war
 battleground, surrounded by the ghosts of our fallen soldiers, and all and
 the problem here- it's not usually a problem because I make sure to
 shave my beard off twice a day, three times on sundays- was that I am,
 actually, born on the fourth of July. So it wasn't just one eagle that
 showed up, it was pretty much every big old patriotic warbird in Missouri,
 all flapping around confused and pissed off, their innate senses of
 direction completely fucked up by the way firecracker babies warp
 America's natural system of ley lines. And I was six, so grabbed the flag
 and ran with it over my shoulders, rippling in the wind, thinking it was
 going to turn into wings for me and I would go be an eagle with all the
 other eagles. Instead I just got mobbed by a freaked-out mess of
 nationalistic avians who all weighed more than I did. I lost half my nose
 and my whole left arm and spent most of fourth grade in reconstructive
 surgery getting machine guns welded on to the shattered remains of my
 ulna. Completely missed my little brother's eagle ceremony, which I wil
 always regret, but it was all worth it to have met Columbia. I never did turn
 into an eagle on the outside, but I like to think those long hours in the
 hospital, feeding her rubbing alcohol and my own blood, have made me
 an eagle in my heart.

My best friend was a dude and he played Ken in barbies but we would also play dinosaurs together. I got down and dirty and caught snakes and raccoons. Originally I was enrolled in dance classes, but at 6 I said I hated it and waned to do sports instead, so my parents enrolled me in soccer. When we went to mcdonalds and I got a happy meal, my mom would always ask “do you want a girl toy or a boy toy?” I turned out fine. That was a very good way to raise a kid because it never forced me to like this thing over that. It let me find my own interests and enjoy them without being shamed or told “thats not for you.” </p><p>However raising “theybies” is going to be reinforcing the harmful “thats not for you” because of the forceful aversion to anything even remotely representative of gender. Instead of allowing the kid to explore interests across a broad range, it’ll be about forcing the parents ideas of gender on to the child without letting the child explore their own personality, interests, etc. </p></blockquote>

 I filmed a scene today with a young child actor
 who had to quickly peck me on the lips as I
 tucked him into bed. The moment in the film is
 supposed to be somewhat uncomfortable,
 unexpected. I've gotten to know him over the
 past five days of shooting - he is a remarkable,
 kind and intuitive kid. He often appears much
 younger than his 12 years of age, waving his
 flashlight under a blanket and singing
 DISSSSC000 PARTYYYYY!!, but now and again
 an old-soul quality of his blinks up at me
 through messy light brown hair.
 He had read the script so he knew the kiss was
 coming, yet when the production team walked
 through it for blocking we'd gloss over the
 moment, nervous about making him
 uncomfortable. He's young and doesn't know
 me all that well and it's a lot to ask of a kid who
 met you five days ago.
 But eventually we had to run it, because that's
 what you have to do. And so when the director
 said we were going to do it for real, our young
 actor pulled me in for a sec and whispered
 "Hey Simone, I want to make sure you're okay
 with everything that happens with the kiss. Do
 you feel okay? Please tell me if l'm ever doing
 too much or if I hurt you or make you feel
 scared." This took many times longer to say
 than the kiss would take to film. True to his
 word, after every take of a .3 second peck, he
 grabbed my hand and whispered Was that
 okay? Did you feel okay?" And then we'd high-
 five and he'd burrow back under the covers to
 resume his flashlight disco party until the next
 take.

 He had read the script so he knew the kiss was
 coming, yet when the production team walked
 through it for blocking we'd gloss over the
 moment, nervous about making him
 uncomfortable. He's young and doesn't know
 me all that well and it's a lot to ask of a kid who
 met you five days ago.
 But eventually we had to run it, because that's
 what you have to do. And so when the director
 said we were going to do it for real, our young
 actor pulled me in for a sec and whispered
 "Hey Simone, I want to make sure you're okay
 with everything that happens with the kiss. Do
 you feel okay? Please tell me if l'm ever doing
 too much or if I hurt you or make you feel
 scared." This took many times longer to say
 than the kiss would take to film. True to his
 word, after every take of a .3 second peck, he
 grabbed my hand and whispered Was that
 okay? Did you feel okay?" And then we'd high-
 five and he'd burrow back under the covers to
 resume his flashlight disco party until the next
 take.

(For my followers not in the know: Franz Boas is basically the progenitor of North American schools of anthropology. He determined correctly that race is a social construct wherein we have created separate categories for physical and cultural traits that actually exist on a spectrum with no true biological boundaries.)

Let’s not forget that Boas::
Was a German-American Jewish immigrant who hated Nazis.  Like.  HATED Nazis and Hitler.  And when everyone else was making noises about how Hitler wasn’t so bad, he’d calm down, etc. - Boas was publishing article after article about what a monster Hitler was and how he should be removed immediately.  
At the time Boas was beginning his career, Anthropologists had been incorrectly using skull measurements to determine who was what race and then participate in the associated racism that is innate to the Great Chain of Being (<– idea that society is a progression from grass hut to modern western society.  Has been debunked over and over, but it’s pervasiveness still shows in many still popular cultural ideas.).  Boas was so ticked off by both the racism and the lack of scientific integrity inherent in the skull measuring that his ass traipsed all over and measured *thousands* of skulls - the largest study ever of the subject - and not only debunked the correlation between race and skull measurements, but proved that skull sizes could be influenced by environment and weren’t even genetically dictated.  He was like “me and my 12,000 skulls say fuck you and the racist horse you rode in on.”  
Debunked the Great Chain of Being - or the idea that culture is a strict progression.  
He was involved with the early NAACP - his writings can be found in their early publications.  
His influence on social perceptions of race helped end the Jim Crow laws.  
Really hated the lack of scientific integrity in anthropology at the time, hence his role in the founding of the current 4-field approach of American anthropology (Cultural anthro, physical anthro, archaeology, and linguistics.).  He was extremely prolific and had a lot of great connections so he had lots of influence. 
He not only approved of women having a place in academia, he mentored several, including one of the most famous anthropologists: Margaret Mead.  
And, yeah, he correctly determined that race is a social construct based on phenotypical characteristics not a biological reality.  
He had a PhD in physics before coming to anthropology and a diverse scientific background, so he had wide and varied interests.  He seems like he was a pretty cool guy.

Tail Pulling is a behavior noted in many corvids. The practical application is to create a distraction that will allow the birb to make off with the target’s food. Imagine being in the lunch room and a large fellow has a Twinkie you covet. You can’t just take it from him because he’ll defend his Twinkie. But if you thwap him on the back of his neck and then dash around to snag the Twinkie while he investigates, you stand a decent chance of enjoying spongey goodness. This is basically that in birb form.
Except corvids don’t only do this as a distraction. Sometimes they seem to just being doing it to mess with other animals/birbs. But to use my lunch room analogy, there are times you might thwap someone sneakily on the back of the neck just for amusement. Primates exhibit behavior that appears to be just be annoying other animals for amusement. Given how intelligent crows are, its not unlikely that this is a manifestation of an innate desire to just fuck with someone else for the fun of it. Such as this from the link above:

Sorry to hijack a little, but to put it bluntly, corvids are also pretty BALSY. They are more than prepared to harass other huge birds of prey which could deal them a lot of damage. There’s plenty of cases of corvids ‘riding’ other birds as well. It’s often to harass the larger bird out of the area, but as @red3blog said, they quite often (in layman’s terms) enjoy fucking shit up for fun.

Except corvids don’t only do this as a distraction. Sometimes they seem to just being doing it to mess with other animals/birbs. But to use my lunch room analogy, there are times you might thwap someone sneakily on the back of the neck just for amusement. Primates exhibit behavior that appears to be just be annoying other animals for amusement. Given how intelligent crows are, its not unlikely that this is a manifestation of an innate desire to just fuck with someone else for the fun of it. Such as this from the link above:

Sorry to hijack a little, but to put it bluntly, corvids are also pretty BALSY. They are more than prepared to harass other huge birds of prey which could deal them a lot of damage. There’s plenty of cases of corvids ‘riding’ other birds as well. It’s often to harass the larger bird out of the area, but as @red3blog said, they quite often (in layman’s terms) enjoy fucking shit up for fun.
