Child Support, Fail, and Jail: Jay-Z and Roc Nation to Invest $3 Million in App That Combats Mass Incarceration @balleralert Jay-Z and Roc Nation to Invest $3 Million in App That Combats Mass Incarceration-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Jay-Z and Roc Nation will reportedly make a $3 million investment in an app called Promise, that combats mass incarceration. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ According to the website, the app was created by Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins and Diana Frappier to “get people out of jail and provide ongoing support and supervision to help keep them out.” The hope is that the platform will exist as an alternative to incarcerating individuals who cannot afford bail or who miss court dates by mistake. It will provide services to users that will help them log upcoming court dates, counseling appointments, and drug tests. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ When it comes to rehabilitation, Promise plans to provide programs to users that assist with job training and getting information about housing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ As a rapper, Jay-Z has used his platform to consistently speak about how the jail system is designed to fail those of low class and people of color. Last year the rapper wrote an opinion piece on Father’s Day about the exploitative bail industry. For many individuals, they are jailed due to their inability to afford bail, despite not being convicted of crimes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ During an interview with TechCrunch, Ellis-Lamkins spoke on the small infractions that lead to many people of color ending up behind bars. “People are going to jail because they look at a piece of paper and misread it, or are going to jail because they can’t afford a class because they’re instead paying child support. If we’re putting people in jail because they’re poor, brown or black, we’re spending money the wrong way.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ “We are increasingly alarmed by the injustice in our criminal justice system,” Jay-Z said in a statement confirming his involvement with the app. “Money, time and lives are wasted with the current policies. It’s time for an innovative and progressive technology that offers sustainable solutions to tough problems. Promise’s team, led by Phaedra, is building an app that can help provide ‘liberty and justice for all’ to millions.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀

Community, Future, and Gucci: Diddy Talks New App With Jay-Z To Connect Consumers to Black-Owned Businesses In New GQ Interview: "It's About Blacks Gaining Economic Power"@balleralert Diddy Talks New App With ‪Jay-Z‬ To Connect Consumers to Black-Owned Businesses In New GQ Interview: “It’s About Blacks Gaining Economic Power” - blogged by @worldwidekeege ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Brother Love himself, or Diddy, as many still recognize his name as, was the cover story for the newest issue of GQ magazine. The interview mentioned a lot of projects we can expect to see from Diddy in the near future, including the new app that he and ‪Jay-Z‬ want to develop to connect consumers to black-owned business. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He stated, "My culture… I want to be an authentic, unapologetic warrior for black culture and the culture of the street and how it moves. My thing is most importantly to change the narrative of the black race. I can't relate to anything that isn't about that.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There wasn’t much mentioned about the app’s name, release date, etc. Yet, Brother Love let up lightly about the apps projected function. When you open it, you will be able to search any city for black-owned or black-friendly business for you to patronize. Like a digital directory. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He goes on to clarify, saying, "This is not about taking away from any other community… We'll still go to Chinatown. We'll still buy Gucci! But the application will make it possible for us to have an economic community. It's about blacks gaining economic power.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Looking forward to seeing how the app works and what kind of businesses you will be able to find once you explore its search engines.

Anaconda, Apple, and Bad: Jay-Z, Diddy, and Dr. Dre Become The Richest American Musicians Of Any Genre As They Top Forbes' Wealthiest Hip Hop Artists List @balleralert Jay-Z, Diddy, and Dr. Dre Become The Richest American Musicians Of Any Genre As They Top Forbes’ Wealthiest Hip Hop Artists List - blogged by @MsJennyb ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Black Excellence is at an all-time high, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. From the massive, record-breaking success of ‘Black Panther’ to the many successful business ventures of our favorite Black entertainers, the culture is thriving and it’s beautiful. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On Thursday, Forbes released its annual list of the wealthiest hip-hop artists on the planet, and the top five entrants came as no surprise as it was very similar to last year’s list. However, there was a bit of a shift in the top two slots. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After catapulting his net worth from $810 million to $900 million through his Armand de Brignac champagne and D’Usse cognac, in addition to his of his nine-figure ownership stakes in Roc Nation and Tidal, Jay-Z has landed the top spot on this year’s list, dethroning business mogul, Diddy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, the Bad Boy CEO secured the No. 2 spot with the help of his interest in Ciroc and Revolt TV, increasing his network to $825 million. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In this year’s list, Dr. Dre held on to his No. 3 spot, but still increased his network form $740 million to $770 million. But, according to reports, Dre may be seeing an even bigger spike next year when he receives his Apple stock from his $3 billion buyout of Beats in 2014. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As the top three contenders for the wealthiest hip-hop acts on the planet, according to Forbes, the three Hip-hop moguls have also become the richest American musicians of any genre in history. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Pulling up the rear of the Forbes Five list is none other than Eminem and Drake, who tied at an even $100 million apiece.

Anaconda, Bailey Jay, and Baller Alert: Baller Alert's Today in Hip-Hop: Kanye West Released 'The College Dropout' 14 Years Ago @balleralert DD PARENTAL ADVISORY EXPLICIT CONTENT Baller Alert’s Today in Hip-Hop: Kanye West Released ‘The College Dropout’ 14 Years Ago-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ On Feb. 10, 2004, Kanye West released his debut studio album ‘The College Dropout’ on Roc-A-Fella Records and Def Jam Recordings. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ From 1999 to the year of its release, West spent years working on the project. While working on the album, West had already established himself as a producer having done production for artists such as Jay-Z and Talib Kweli. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Doing his own production, West created a masterpiece. Not only did he develop a new sound nicknamed “chipmunk soul," where he took R&B and Soul samples and sped them up, but his lyricism also introduced us to a new style. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ While many rappers of the time maintained the gangsta rap style we were used to, West instead introduced us to the story of the average joe who questions family, religion, politics, and more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ The singles from the album, "Through the Wire" and "Jesus Walks", were both critically acclaimed, while “All Falls Down" and "Slow Jamz" charted in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Upon its release, the album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart having sold 441,000 copies in the first week. ‘The College Dropout’ received phenomenal reviews from multiple publications and even earned West 10 Grammy nominations. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Multiple publications such as Time and Rolling Stone have named it one of the greatest albums of all time.
