Black history month day 27: Catholic saint Josephine Bakhita.

Josephine Margaret Bakhita was born around the year 1869 in the western Sudanese region of Darfur. She belonged to the prestigious Daju people and lived a prosperous and comfortable life until sometime between the age of seven and nine when she was kidnapped by Arab slave traders.

Josephine was forced to walk barefoot about 600 miles to El Obeid and was already sold and bought twice before she arrived there. Over the course of twelve years she was resold again three more times and then given away. During this time she was forcibly converted to Islam. Due to the trauma of her childhood she forgot her given name and took another one, bakhita, Arabic for lucky.

Josephine spent much of her time under cruel masters who beat and abused her. Eventually she was taken by new masters to Italy where she became the nanny of their children and was treated well. While on a trip, her masters left her in the care of the Canossian Sisters of Venice. But when they returned to get Josephine, she firmly refused to leave. When her masters tried to force the issue, the superior of the Catechumenate that she attended complained to the Italian authorities. On 29 November 1889 an Italian court ruled that because the British had induced Sudan to outlaw slavery before Josephine’s birth and because Italian law did not recognize slavery, she had never legally been a slave.

Finally Josephine was free and was baptized into the Catholic Church, receiving communion from the future Pope Pius X. Josephine lived out her days as a dedicated Sister in Italy. When asked what she would do if she were to ever meet her captors again, she replied: “If I were to meet those who kidnapped me, and even those who tortured me, I would kneel and kiss their hands. For, if these things had not happened, I would not have been a Christian and a religious today”
:
Black history month day 27: Catholic saint Josephine Bakhita.

Josephine Margaret Bakhita was born around the year 1869 in the western Sudanese region of Darfur. MY THOUGHTS ON TONIGHTS EPISODE OF GREYS ANATOMY (13x11) ARE BELOW. CONTAINS SPOILERS. PROCEED WITH CAUTION. • • • • • • • • • • • • Okay, so to start off, I thought this episode was actually pretty good, but not the best this season. Bailey needs to get her head out of her ass (sorry Chandra, ily!!) and realize that Richard is amazing and that Minnick has nothing on him. I really feel bad hating Eliza even though she's potentially taking Richard's job because I really really really love Marika and I want to like Eliza and I want to ship Ariliza BUT I JUST CANT BECAUSE ELIZAS SO ANNOYING ALL THE TIME!! I was super disappointed in the fact that DeLuca, Riggs and April barely got screen time this episode because Giacomo, Martin and Sarah are so talented and I feel like we've barely seen them this season. I'm so proud of Maggie, Jackson and April for organizing everything against Eliza- SHE NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS NKT OKAY TO MESS WITH THE OG CHIEF OKAY? OKAY. I am not an Omelia shipper, but I just want their marriage to work out because Owen needs to be happy. He deserves the world and the universe just keeps giving him so much crap and he's just taking it. He needs to stop accepting it and demand something more. He deserves it. I really liked how much screen time my pretty baby Jerrika Delayne Hinton ( my Jer Bear❤) got this episode!😍 Jerrika is so amazingly talented. I loved getting to see Steph's house, even though I wasn't a fan of the fact that she was hiding Amelia. And my poor little baby Arizona💘 she was just trying to help the patient😞 I really hope we get an update on Mindy and the hockey guys that Jo and Ben were treating because I'm interested to find out what happened to them. I liked how 'Zona and Leah were civil and nice to each other. I can really see a nice professional relationship forming there- even if they have a rocky past. Speaking of Josephine Alice Wilson... JO GET YO HEAD OUT OF YO ASS AND TREAT YOUR PATIENTS FOR GODS SAKE When Arizona returned home to her and DeLuca's house, they had such a cute moment on the stairs, and for a second I thought that they were going to kiss... THEN I REMEMBERED THAT (continued in comments): Facts forgreys MY THOUGHTS ON TONIGHTS EPISODE OF GREYS ANATOMY (13x11) ARE BELOW. CONTAINS SPOILERS.
