Food, Friday, and Growing Up: Tim Duncan Raises Over $2 Million for Hurricane Irma Relief @balleralert 36 Kills 99.999% of Bacteria Rame utter 390 Colgate Tim Duncan Raises Over $2 Million for Hurricane Irma Relief-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ NBA legend TimDuncan has spent his time recently, working on relief efforts for victims of HurricaneIrma. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ The Category 5 hurricane burst through the U.S. Virgin Islands causing complete destruction in several towns and neighborhoods. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Duncan, born and raised in St. Croix, wrote an article Friday, for the Players’ Tribune titled “Don’t Forget About the Islands,” detailing his own personal experiences with natural disasters after Hurricane Hugo hit his home when he was 13-years-old. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Duncan said it took more than a year before some type of normalcy was reestablished. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Through his own experiences, he felt compelled to give back to the victims of Irma. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ “It takes me back to when I was a kid, growing up and having to go through that,” Duncan said on ESPN's "Mike & Mike." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Duncan has partnered with the San Antonio Food Bank to collect supplies and donations for victims of Irma. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ He has also set up a fundraiser on youcaring.com that has already raised more than $2 million. Duncan will also match the donations up to $1 million. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ In addition to setting up two H-E-B locations for people to receive material donations, he also plans to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands to personally deliver donations. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ “I didn’t know then as a 13-year-old kid, but there are people putting relief together, getting workers down there, getting food and supplies to help us get through that time,” Duncan said. “I’m just trying to be that guy now.”
