Advice, America, and Apparently: AjA J+ 2 mins AjAJ+ 2 mins #comicCon is underway. With a recent surge in diversifying comic book characters, do you have a new favorite superhero? on is under way with a recent surge in diversifying comic book #Comic characters, do you have a new favorite superhero? Is diversit killing comios? As Aj fanboys but ho. Sorry MARVEL V.P. ADMITS POLITICAL CORRECTNESS KILLED COMIC SALES April 3, 2017 Daniel Greenfield 50 526 While the Marvel-Disney monster has been ruling the box office, Marvel Comics sales have been having serious issues. One obvious factor was trying to force political correctness on readers by replacing Peter Parker, Iron Man, etc with ridiculously politically correct "diverse" versions In a revelation that would surprise no one, comic book readers were not interested in a Muslim Ms. Marvel, a Latino Spider-Man who isn't Peter Parker or the Angela Davis version of Iron Man. And Marvel's VP of Sales made the mistake of admitting that.
princess-has-a-pen:

trilllizard420:

the1manpizzaparty:

trilllizard420:

unicornlordart:

Well… Somebody’s fucking lying.

diversity in and of itself doesn’t kill comics, but pointless, endless reboots, massive events that rely on you keeping up with 12 given titles at any time, and constant, badly established legacy characters are why comics are failing

not to mention splitting up iconic superhero titles among more than one person at once

did you know there’s actually 3 people running around with the Wolverine codename at the moment?

Let’s take some examples:

Riri Williams popped up with no buildup after Tony Stark got murked, but he was apparently monitoring this 15 year old girl teen prodigy never mentioned before in his comics, entrusted with an AI based on his brain patterns and personality to mentor her.

You know, as compared to however fucking many characters they could’ve given his legacy to.

Also we’re supposed to believe someone as egotistical and self glorifying as Dr Doom would take on the identity of Iron Man?

Please.

It’s the same shit as Jane Foster as female Thor, with a healthy combination of plothole.

Somehow, a human woman who has not been involved with Thor in way, with a terminal disease that was ravaging her body, somehow ended up ON THE MOON without any protection and managed to pick up Mjolnr and was found Worthy by it after the fight where Thor ceased to be Worthy.

Like, you know, instead of Sif, a long time companion of Thor and who can pick up the hammer or Angela, who Marvel had then won a recent legal fight to be able to use….

People don’t dislike it because it’s “diversity”

They don’t like it because it’s weak, pandering writing that doesn’t stand up to internal logic.

Now, an example of this done right is when Sam Wilson, aka, the Falcon, became Captain America

for one thing, he was actually established as working closely with Steve Rogers for a long time in the comics before he was given the mantle. By Steve Rogers himself.

See, at this point, Rogers got rapidly aged cause his super serum stopped working and he was an old man, so he couldn’t do it any more, but he was still around to give Sam advice and support over comms.

But of course, until Marvel actually bothers to learn why people aren’t buying their shit, they’re gonna keep making the same mistakes, as long as they’re insulated by the losses of the MCU and being used by Disney as a vanity press, they’ll never learn and lose more ground to DC and the indies

EDIT: Also I totally forgot, unrecognizable new brands they try to create.

If your comic customers, as in the customers that go in and buy things, if they go “who’s this” and show you a comic, then they’re probably not gonna pick it up. They’re there to buy Spider-Man, Batman, Wolverine, X-Men, Avengers they can recognize, not fuckin Stardude or whatever odd new thing they’re gonna push is.

It’s nothing to do with race of sex of the characters concerned, but if they’ve got no brand recognition to support their solo titles, they’re gonna flounder.

Not even getting into the alienating, pointlessly political shite like that infamous Mockingbird “Ask Me About My Feminist Agenda” t-shirt schlock stunt.

What’s also more damaging than that is a flippant response to criticism or calling their readership racist assholes on twitter or whatever. That’s a really bad look for an industry professional when you’re not even an artist or a writer as someone essential to a comic book.

this person forgot to mention how they shoehorn in unnecessary commentary and subplots no one was looking for. it honestly feels like that sometimes spider man stops mid fight and says “did i mention im a gay POC” (hyperbole but kind of true)

this, sadly, is Not Hyperbole with America Chavez

And the worst thing is?

With tweaking and good writing, Riri and America (what a stupid name) could work.

But because Marvel is run by incompetent pandering idiots, they’re the worst ideas to ever come out of the company.

I honestly wish Riri had been done well because I don’t mind the concept.

Mondays, Muslim, and Definition: The Independent @lndependent Follow Someone told this woman Sharia law should be banned. She shut them down in the most epic way Someone told this woman Sharia law should be banned. She shut them down... Monday's episode of ABC's Q&A featured two people with vastly different opinions engineer Yassmin Abdel- indy100.com Amin HaqueAminHaqq 13m Replying to @Independent Hey @Independent, can you guys quit your bullshit? Pointing out that a faith that was more egalitarian literally over 1000 years isnt shutting someone down". You got the next 1400 years to poorly explain. Islam, to me, is the most feminist religion. Right. We got equal rights well before the Europeans. We don't take our husband's last names because we ain't their property. We were given the right to own our own land... The fact is what is culture is separate from what is faith and the fact that people go around dissing my falth without knowing anything abo t..y Amin HaqueAminHaqq 10m Please, @Independent, tell me, why did she refer to praying, something that only applies to the individual, as a defence for sharia law? *LAWS* apply to evervone. Me praying flve times a day is Sharia. Lambie continued, unwilling to listen to the Muslim woman's definition of Sharia law t What about equal rights to women? That, says Magied, is completely separate from Islam. And then she delivered the following smack-down: Amin Haque@AminHaqq 5m So go ahead @Independent, write an article about the sharia *laws, that apply to someone who leaves their faith, or about inheritance, or domestic violence?? Dont forgot your patronising hashtags #pwned #owned #smackdown Or is that too clickbaity for you? The Independent quotes a woman who think Sharia Law is feminist

Asian, Beautiful, and Children: The Observer Muslim foster parents: We'd never had a Christmas tree it made them so happy
ikkimikki:

philtippett:

ithelpstodream:

Once the children were asleep, Sajjad headed out on an urgent shopping mission. “We are Muslims and we’d never had a Christmas tree in our home. But these children were Christian and we wanted them to feel connected to their culture.”

The couple worked until the early hours putting the tree up and wrapping presents. The first thing the children saw the next morning was the tree.

“I had never seen that kind of extra happiness and excitement on a child’s face.“ The children were meant to stay for two weeks – seven years later two of the three siblings are still living with them.

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2017/dec/03/muslim-foster-parents-it-has-been-such-a-blessing?CMP=fb_gu

this is a beautiful article and i just want to include a few other highlights from the above family as well as another profiled:

…she focuses on the positives – in particular how fostering has given her and Sajjad an insight into a world that had been so unfamiliar. “We have learned so much about English culture and religion,” Sajjad says. Riffat would read Bible stories to the children at night and took the girls to church on Sundays. “When I read about Christianity, I don’t think there is much difference,” she says. “It all comes from God.”

The girls, 15 and 12, have also introduced Riffat and Sajjad to the world of after-school ballet, theatre classes and going to pop concerts. “I wouldn’t see many Asian parents at those places,” she says. “But I now tell my extended family you should involve your children in these activities because it is good for their confidence.” Having the girls in her life has also made Riffat reflect on her own childhood. “I had never spent even an hour outside my home without my siblings or parents until my wedding day,” she says.

Just as Riffat and Sajjad have learned about Christianity, the girls have come to look forward to Eid and the traditions of henna. “I’ve taught them how to make potato curry, pakoras and samosas,” Riffat says. “But their spice levels are not quite the same as ours yet.” The girls can also sing Bollywood songs and speak Urdu.

“I now look forward to going home. I have two girls and my wife waiting,” says Sajjad. “It’s been such a blessing for me,” adds Riffat. “It fulfilled the maternal gap.”

[…]

Shareen’s longest foster placement arrived three years ago: a boy from Syria. “He was 14 and had hidden inside a lorry all the way from Syria,” she says. The boy was deeply traumatised. They had to communicate via Google Translate; Shareen later learned Arabic and he picked up English within six months. She read up on Syria and the political situation there to get an insight into the conditions he had left.

“It took ages to gain his trust,” she says. “I got a picture dictionary that showed English and Arabic words and I remember one time when I pronounced an Arabic word wrong and he burst out laughing and told me I was saying it wrong – that was the breakthrough.”

The boy would run home from school and whenever they went shopping in town, he kept asking Shareen when they were going back home. She found out why: “He told me that one day he left his house in Syria and when he had come back, there was no house.” Now he’s 18, speaks English fluently and is applying for apprenticeships. He could move out of Shareen’s home, but has decided to stay. “He is a very different person to the boy who first came here,” she says, “and my relationship with him is that of a mother to her son.”

What a beautifully loving family.

This makes my heart happy
