The saiyans in DBZ are a representation of black Americans from a phenotypical and literary standpoint. This detail in character design is a direct reference to the the black phenotype as the black race specifically black Americans have "Kinky" or "nappy" hair textures meaning our hair grows and stands at an upward position away from our face and the majority of our race only grow black hair for the purpose of protection against UV radiation. The eyes of a pure blooded saiyan in this series are always dark brown and this is another phenotypical trait which blacks posses, again, to protect from UV radiation. Another notable trait present in the saiyan back story is that they are portrayed as an exceptionally strong warrior race and this ties in with the natural athleticism which is inherent in the black genome along with some of the greatest warriors in history being of the black race. A large part of the saiyan's inherent strength and durability is attributed to the fact that they live on a planet with 10x the gravity of earth, just as a large part of the inherent durability of the black race can be attributed to the adaptation required in order to thrive on the harsh continent of Africa. Besides the durability provided to both the saiyans in this series and blacks in the real world due to the adaptation required to live on drastic geographical locations, another factor which plays a part in the natural strength of saiyans comes in the form of "zenkai boosts" where battle, especially being beaten to near death, increases a saiyan's power exponentially if they survive.
