White South African Woman Becomes First To Be Jailed For Hate Speech After Video Of Her Racist Rant Goes Viral; Sentenced To Three Years – blogged by @MsJennyb ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While racist, hate speech should never be tolerated, it is strictly prohibited in South Africa, as it is specifically excluded from the protection of free speech in the Constitution. In fact, according to the NY Times, back in 2016, the country released a draft law that would criminalize racism, meaning hate speech cases would go to criminal courts instead of civil and would be punishable by up to 10 years in prison. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since then, the nation has moved to implement the new rules and subsequently make an example of a white South African woman. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to CNN, Vicki Momberg was found guilty in November for crimen injuria, better known as the willful injuring of someone’s dignity in her racist verbal attack on a black police officer. The incident was caught on camera and quickly went viral. Since then, Momberg has been prosecuted and sentenced to three years in prison with one year suspended sentence, as she becomes the first South African to be jailed for the offense. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “We’ve had crimen injuria (cases before), but they have always been coupled by other charges. This is the first for a prison sentence for crimen injuria on its own,” a spokesperson said of the sentencing. “We are pleased with the sentence. This sends a clear message to those who undermine other people’s rights.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In the incident that led to the sentencing, Momberg was caught on video hurling racial slurs at South African police officers after they stopped to help her after her car was broken into in Johannesburg. According to reports, she repeatedly used words that were used to insult black people during the apartheid. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now, Momberg will have two years behind bars to think about her actions.: White South African Woman Becomes First To Be Jailed For Hate Speech After Video Of Her Racist Rant Goes Viral; Sentenced To Three Years @balleralert White South African Woman Becomes First To Be Jailed For Hate Speech After Video Of Her Racist Rant Goes Viral; Sentenced To Three Years – blogged by @MsJennyb ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While racist, hate speech should never be tolerated, it is strictly prohibited in South Africa, as it is specifically excluded from the protection of free speech in the Constitution.
Reading this article in the NY Times about Trump congratulating Roseanne on her show coming back. I feel like this sentence is pretty misleading. To say Trump has never supported gay marriage is to suggest that he specifically opposes it, despite the fact that he has said he doesn’t really care about it or mind it. I think it’s pretty obvious that Trump doesn’t give a shit about gay marriage and anything he said opposing it was very mild and intended to appease his evangelical backing. Trump easily vacillates from stance to stance depending on what sounds the best to the people he’s talking to. Doesn’t say much for his integrity but it does dismiss a lot of pearl clutching about him being some anti-gay marriage crusader.
: Ms. Barr defended the president at several points in the interview, objecting to a suggestion that he opposes many of the views that she and Roseanne Conner have espoused over the years, like support for abortion rights, same-sex marriage and organized labor Mr. Trump used to back abortion rights before running for president as a Republican, but he has never supported same-sex marriage.
Reading this article in the NY Times about Trump congratulating Roseanne on her show coming back. Woman Becomes Ph.D Candidate at N.Y.U After Serving 20 Years in Prison for Murder - blogged by @MsJennyb ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In 1996, MichelleJones was charged with murder and neglect of her four-year-old son. While incarcerated in an Indiana prison for more than two decades, the NY Times reports that Jones became a published scholar of American history and used the prison library to further her education. During her sentence, Jones, alongside a group of inmates, produced the best research project for the Indiana Historical Society, in addition to writing several dance compositions and plays, one of which is set to open at an Indianapolis theater in December. She also got certified as a paralegal and received a bachelor’s degree in 2004. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After spending 20 of an initial 50-year sentence behind bars, Jones was released. The very next day, Jones took her talents to New York University (NYU) to join the school’s doctoral program, only after her application was accepted and later denied by Harvard University’s history program, which was her first choice. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Although, Jones was among 18 applicants out of over 300 for the program, her application was overturned after some professors raised concerns about her application. While other professors supported Jones, calling her “one of the strongest candidates in the country last year, period,” Jones was ultimately denied for minimizing her crime “to the point of misrepresentation.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to reports, Jones got pregnant as a result of non-consensual sex with a high school senior, at the age of 14. In turn, her mother beat her in the stomach with a board, forcing her to be removed from the home. After years of domestic violence and neglect, Jones wrote in a personal statement that she suffered a psychological breakdown and did the same things to her own son, Brandon Sims. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sims was murdered back in 1992, but the details remain unclear, as the body was never recovered. Jones admitted to the crime two years later and was sentenced to 50 years. LOS ANGELES — She spends her days preparing legal strategies to help undocumented immigrants stay in the country. But at any moment, Lizbeth Mateo could be picked up for deportation herself. She is an immigration lawyer with her own immigration lawyer. Last month, Ms. Mateo was officially sworn in as a lawyer, taking an oath to uphold the United States Constitution. After years of flaunting her status as undocumented and openly defying immigration law, she is now part of the legal system and hopes to represent clients who, like her, entered the United States illegally. Allowing undocumented immigrants to work as lawyers is a sign of just how far the acceptance of such immigrants has come in places like California. When Kevin de León, the leader of the California State Senate, presided over Ms. Mateo’s swearing-in ceremony, he called her the embodiment of the American dream.
