(though fucking isn’t always the best route, as asexual reproduction is massively advantageous as a short-term strategy, and certain species dominate the landscape by switching between sexual/asexual depending on environmental conditions) besides all that, the strength of humankind has always been our ability to work together communally, and that’s straight science. so even if you went down the extremely problematic path of valuing fellow humans based on their potential evolutionary contribution (coughs, eugenics, coughs), there would still be zero scientific basis behind discriminating against trans, non-binary and intersex people. tl;dr here’s a challenge to all the bigots out there: please stop using “science” as a defence when the actual science is (overwhelmingly) against you. Science: pissing off bigots of all kinds since its inception. I find White-throated sparrows fascinating. They have two color morphs, the bright one: And the drab one: The two morphs have very different behavior. The bright ones are more aggressive, setting up territories and defending them, being more aggressive about defending against predators. They sing more often. The dull ones are quieter and less aggressive. They are more attentive to the nest, and better at feeding nestlings. The morphs tend to make a good pairing for raising children because they specialize in different roles. The dull-colored birds, being more camouflaged, are safer when sitting on the nest, and are better able to hide. The bright-colored birds, being more visible, are better able to intimidate predators and rivals. Interestingly though, both color morphs occur in both female and male birds. And birds tend to pair up with both opposite sex and opposite color morph birds. The dimorphism and different roles that, in most birds, are strongly associated with biological sex, in this species has evolved to be abstracted and separated from biological sex. Some people have described this system as the birds having “four sexes”. It’s been proposed that some life may have only first split into multiple sexes in order to confuse or slow down parasites so maybe some folks get offended cause deep down they just think roundworms will get them : bogleech: cazort: marvelousgameofdisneythrones: pangur-and-grim: my favourite part of the Evolutionary Biology courses I took at the University of Toronto was learning that several bird species have 3+ sexes? the ruff bird is a great example - each male variant has a different (and successful!) reproductive strategy, and a different chromosomal sequence. unlike the ruff bird, human sex falls into a bimodal distribution - this means there are two strong peaks (”typical” male and female morphs), with a whole lot in between. evolution is nice way of saying “statistics played out longterm among living organisms”, and evolutionarily successful traits….aren’t something to hold up as natural or moral, or representative of an advanced state. it’s literally just fuck tactics that make your group size increase. They COULD use their back fin EXCEPT GUESS WHAT IT DOESNT FUCKING GROW. It just continually folds in on itself, so the freaking cells are being made, this piece of floating garbage just doesn’t put them where they need to fucking go. So they don’t have swim bladders. You know, the one thing that every fish has to make sure it doesn’t just sink to the bottom of the ocean when they stop moving and can stay the right side up. This creature. That can barely move to begin with. Can never stop its continuous tour of idiocy across the ocean or it’ll fucking sink. EXCEPT. EXCEPT. When they get stuck on top of the water! Which happens frequently! Because without the whole swim bladder thing, if the ocean pushes over THE THINNEST BUT LARGEST MOST TOPPLE-ABLE FISH ON THE PLANET, shit outta luck! Some scientists have speculated that when they do that, they are absorbing energy from the sun because no one fucking knows how they manage to get any real energy to begin with. So they need the sun I guess. And in 2005 it decided to relive its mighty glory days and do it again, this time landing on a four-year-old boy. Luckily Byron sustained no injuries. Way to go, fish. Great job. They mostly only eat jellyfish because of course they do, they could only eat something that has no brain and a possibility of drifting into their mouths I guess. Everything they do eat has almost zero nutritional value and because it’s so stupidly fucking big, it has to eat a ton of the almost no nutritional value stuff to stay alive. Dumb. See that ridiculous open mouth? (This is actually why this is my favorite picture of one, and I have had it saved to my phone for three years) “Oh no! What could have happened! They do SOMETIMES get eaten though. BUT HARDLY. No animal truly uses them as a food source, but instead (which has lead us to said photo) will usually just maim the fuck out of them for kicks. Seals have been seen playing with their fins like frisbees. Probably the most useful thing to ever come from them. “Wow, you raise some good points here, this fish truly is proof that God has abandoned us.” Yes, thank you. “But if they’re so bad at literally everything, why haven’t they gone extinct.” Great question. goddamnshinyrock: why-animals-do-the-thing: wolfforce58205: zooophagous: caong: zooophagous: theexoticvet: Tick season is already in full swing and it’s going to be one of the worst years for ticks and lyme disease. Make sure your pets are on flea/tick/heartworm prevention and get your dogs vaccinated against lyme! The sun is shining and the grass is green in minnesota today, what a lovely beginning to the impending TICKPOCALYPSE Remember to cover yourselves appropriately if you’re going places with lots of wildlife! Ticks are dangerous for people as well as pets! I’ve always heard to avoid long pants because ticks are easier to notice and remove when they try to climb a bare leg, but I think it’s a matter of preference tbh. What you really need is to use a good repellant made for use in tick heavy areas. I’m not talking citronella essential oils, I mean a real repellant like Deep woods OFF that uses DDT. Spray it on your shoes and inside your shoes. You would be surprised how many ticks start in your socks and work their way up. I have had waaaaaay fewer guests on me after spraying my shoes as well as my legs. If you want to get REALLY serious you can treat your hiking gear in permethrin, or get permethrin treated exercise gear. It’s a very potent, effective substance that kills ticks and other parasites on contact. It’s present in some flea and tick treatments for dogs. But the kicker is, permethrin is also VERY toxic to cats, so if you have a cat and you feel like you need permethrin treated gear, you MUST keep the gear where kitty can’t get it. Friendly reminder to stock up on tick meds for your pets, and repellent for yourself! This year is going to be a BAD one. ALWAYS check yourself after a hike, or any trip outside. Wear bright clothes so it’s easier to see ticks on you, and make sure to do a full-body check when you’re done. This includes checking your hair line and under waistbands or underwear (last tick I found on me was on my butt, and I had been hiking with pants and a long shirt on…trust me, check under your underwear). Remove ticks as soon as you find them, and keep them in a small container or bag (heads completely squished) for identification purposes just in case your bite looks iffy later on. Clean the bite site thoroughly. Be on the look out for any flu-like symptoms, rashes, or red rings around the bite site like a bulls-eye (note: a slight red ring right afterward is normal, see below for what “bad” looks like). Usually if you get a tick off in the first 24 hours you’ll be ok, so long as you didn’t agitate the tick, but if you notice anything abnormal go to the doctor ASAP. If your tick was engorged when removed, be especially on the lookout. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the nasty diseases ticks can carry. Remember: if you’re buying tick preventatives for your pets, make sure you get one that’s meant for them. Don’t use dog-specific medicine on cats, or vice-versa, and make sure you get the correct weight range for your pet. Failure to do so can lead to serious complications for your pets. If you’re not sure what you should use or what’s safe for pets, contact your local veterinarian and ask. If your pet is bitten by a tick and displays any abnormal behaviors or symptoms of sickness get them to your vet as soon as you can and bring the tick with you. This has been your tick safety reminder post for the season. Reblogging for both human tick safety and the note that permethrin is really deadly to cats. important addition: when you come in from your outdoors activity, as you do your tick check put the clothes you were wearing directly into the wash (or, if you can’t wash them immediately for some reason, into a sealed plastic bag). Don’t sit on your furniture, don’t put the clothes in your hamper with your other things, and don’t delay the tick check. If a tick is on the removed clothing and the clothing isn’t cleaned, they’ll head for the nearest delicious mammal, whether that’s a person or a pet. After you quarantine your clothes and check your whole body (get a buddy or use a mirror for your back), it’s also wise to shower, although that’s by no means foolproof, and won’t have any effect if a tick has already latched on. When you do your check, focus on the crevices of your body- on people and animals, ticks are most likely to latch on in warm and protected areas. This means that the groin, underarms, and scalp are a prime tick buffet, as well as under your bra and (as someone above said) under your waistband, or any other area where your clothing fits snugly. On pets, they’ll concentrate in the thicker fur at the neck, behind the ears, and in the ‘armpits’, but you’ll likely also find a few elsewhere on the body, especially on pets with fluffy coats. : goddamnshinyrock: why-animals-do-the-thing: wolfforce58205: zooophagous: caong: zooophagous: theexoticvet: Tick season is already in full swing and it’s going to be one of the worst years for ticks and lyme disease. virulentblog: plaid-flannel: Seen in the window at Gulf of Maine Books in Brunswick, Maine. Photo: Bill Roorbach Except America wasn’t an endless expanse of forest with no certain borders. At least not while human beings inhabited it. The idea that native peoples did not cultivate or shape our land and that we had no borders is white propaganda meant to dehumanize and de-legitimize native peoples. This illustration here show Apalachee people using slash and burn methods for agriculture. Fires were set regularly to intention burn down forests and plains. Why would we do this? Well because an unregulated forest isn’t that great for people, actually. We set fires to destroy new forest growth and undergrowth, and to remove trees, allowing for easier game hunting, nutrient enriched soil, and better growth rates for crops and herbs we used in food and medicine. Pre-Colonial New England, where my tribe the Abenaki are from, looked more like an extensive meadow or savannah with trees growing in pockets and groves. Enough woodland to support birds, deer, and moose, but not too much to make hunting difficult. We carefully shaped the land around us to suit our needs as a thriving and successful people. Slash and burn agriculture was practiced virtually everywhere in the new world, from the pacific coast to chesapeake bay, from panama to quebec. It was a highly successful way of revitalizing the land and promoting crop growth, as well as preventing massive forest fires that thrive in unregulated forests. Berries were the major source of fruit for my tribe, and we needed to burn the undergrowth so they could grow. That changed when white people invaded, and brought with them disease. In my tribe, up to 9 in 10 people died. 90% of our people perished not from violence starvation, but from disease. Entire villages would be decimated, struck down by small pox. Suddenly, we couldn’t care for the land anymore. There weren’t enough of us to maintain a vast, carefully structured ecological system like we had for thousands of years. We didn’t have the numbers, or strength. So the trees grew back and unregulated. We couldn’t set fires anymore, and we couldn’t cultivate the land. And white people would make certain we never could again. Timber, after all, was the most important export from New England. Endless trees and untamed wilderness is a nice fantasy. But it’s a very white fantasy, one that erases the history of my people and of my land. One that paints native peoples are merely parasites leeching off the land, not masters of the earth who new the right balance of hunting and agriculture. It robs us of our agency as people, and takes our accomplishments from us. Moreover, it implies that only white people ever discovered the power to shape the world around them, and that mere brown people can’t possibly have had anything to do with changing our environment. Don’t bring back untamed wilderness. Bring back my fire setters, my tree sappers, my farmers and my fishers. Bring back my people who were here first. Sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_American_use_of_fire#Role_of_fire_by_natives https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fsbdev3_000385.pdf http://www.sidalc.net/repdoc/A11604i/A11604i.pdf For those curious I recommend reading Changes in the Land: Indians, Colonists and the Ecology of New England.https://books.google.com/books/about/Changes_in_the_Land.html?id=AHclmuykdBQCprintsec=frontcoversource=kp_read_button#v=onepageqf=false : MAKE AMERICA AN ENDLESS EXPANSE OF OLD-GROWTH FOREST WITH NO CERTAIN BORDERS AGAIN virulentblog: plaid-flannel: Seen in the window at Gulf of Maine Books in Brunswick, Maine. People who worked for those degrees tend towards disliking an honorary overstepping, especially with how little you can do to get one.

It’s less Bill Nye is like the above and more like Bill Nye is just like Linus Pauling.

I don’t know if he’s that good, but let me tell you something

when non science communicators start talking science, people get scared. we talk about wierd funguses and parasites and hyperparasitoid wasps and viruses and what not and the strange (and exicting!) shit they do and the next thing you know, you have 398 different books and video games and webcomics exploring zombies and aliens parasites/virus and fungal zombies and a whole nine yards. which at least the audiance of those only has a mini freak out when they find out that, say, cordyceps(last of us) is a real thing (but only a few insect species are susceptible).

so for big mainsteam infodumps, we give very safe and secure and generally well recieved science communicators a long lead.

I meant more in Pauling’s thing on megadoses of Vitamin C. Great chemist, but knows fuck all about nutrition and medicine. And part of me gets the idea that people don’t get that Bill is a damn fine engineer, but his science credentials, are of the pop variety, which can be good to get kids into the sciences, but the way people treat him as an authority on anything aside from mechanical engineering leaves a pretty bad taste in my mouth, especially given that I know exactly how he got his start, and I’ve seen more accomplished people do a better job.

and then people ask how we get there and we say, well we’d have to start with stem cell research and then we’d have cloning tech and organ donoation wouldn’t even be a thing and then (and then people get VERYVERY SCARED) next thing you know there’s a human born human front and everyone is rewatching gattaca and blade runner and getting VERY SCARED again. I mean damn, if people find out what we’re doing with parathanogenisis research in the mean while, y’all would flip a lid.

also, “vitamin megadose therapy”: actually very effective for some nutritional defecencies and related diseases(scurvy is an old one: large doses of vitamin C which yes is water soluble and is thus pissed out, treats scurvy faster than the exact capacity dose, rickets and some others), but yes negligble effect on healthy people. and it promoted people looking at world hunger as a problem to be solved to look at total nutrition(something not thought of in the 1960′s), not just kcal quantity. and for healthy people, megadosing does nothing that a placebo doesn’t do unless it’s once of the few fat soluble ones, and thus is altogether harmless as a ritual.

and of course, it serves as an mental innoculation against leaving things like bright’s disease(s) declared ‘untreatable’.

sometimes you have to come at a problem or set of problems squirrelly and sideways.

I’m referring to megadoses being a panacea, which Linus kinda started (and has been shown by other to be not the case) of somebody with a particular degree going out of their element and making a fool of themselves.

What I’m going on here is that Nye wass great for getting kids into the sciences, but he’s not an authority. He’s an entertainer first and foremost. He’s not an authority on most of the stuff he purports either, and even then has problems in still being the guy from Almost Live who had science demonstrations that three Brits who actually work for Universities and have relevant degrees as well do an even better job of teaching while entertaining (helps that the three have some education credentials to back it up).

Like I said his knowledge is of the pop and elementary variety, and very often (especially nowadays) strays into guy who doesn’t even try to research what he’s talking about in the slightest.

As for squirelly thinking, that’s great when it produces repeatable and verifiable results, but often it tends toward pseudioscience, which gets debunked time and again. This prevents them from holding on to the intestinal walls, as they usually do during a bowel movement. In Islamic teachings, the pumpkin has been introduced as a useful element for the brain. The Prophet has been quoted as saying: eat pumpkin since it increases brain capabilities. According to modern science, the useful parts of the pumpkin are its flesh and seed. Pumpkin has high amounts of vitamin A and removes toxins, besides being effective in preventing weight loss. Pumpkin activates memory cells, and is also effective in keeping the lungs and liver in healthy order. The pumpkin is prescribed for kidney and bladder disorders and plays a miraculous role in treatment of diabetes and high blood pressure. Physicians recommend eating big pumpkins. It is interesting to know that big sweet pumpkins are not damaging for those people who suffer from diabetes. Pumpkin is also considered a cooling fruit and useful for removing body inflammation and thirst.
