Bad, Beautiful, and College: 5 hrs Ok. This is NOT a joke. We paid a photographer, who claimed to be a professional, $250 for a family photo shoot. Please see these FOR REAL photos she delivered to us....She said the shadows were really bad on the beautiful, clear, sunny day and that her professor never taught her to retouch photos. Feel Magery by Lesa Hall C 2017 Magery by Lesa Hall IMagery by Lesa Hall O 2017 willow-wanderings: libertarirynn: r3druger: tiffanarchy: libertarirynn: siryouarebeingmocked: derpomatic: Holy shit she NPC’d them! You get what you pay for… Since when is $250 considered “cheap” for a family photo? what lol When you value a freelancer’s actual talent enough to pay then real money for doing a real job. Yeah, $250 is definitely on the lower end for professional photographs. I have quite a few photographer friends. As a mercenary soul-caputurer myself, yeah, you get what you fucking pay for. Photography has the same costs as any other business. The price you charge has to cover the cost of materials (film if you’re shooting old school, prints, maintenance for your camera whether analog or digital), labor (time spent setting up and shooting), and overhead (gas, food, website hosting costs, etc. if you need it to do some part of the job, it’s in your overhead). Now those are just your operating costs, if you want to actually make money you have to add a percentage for profit (e.g. operating costs + 20%). Let me give you non-photographers a frame of reference here. Paying $250 for a single-day private photo session on location (which means travel costs on top of everything else), is the equivalent of paying $50 for a huge ornate wedding cake you ordered the day before the wedding. This ‘tog is still severely unprofessional and unqualified, though. I consider myself still a beginner but taking good photos in bright sunlight isn’t hard, I do it all the time. Like literally three-quarters of my flickr is all natural light shoots, it’s easier than studio shoots in some ways (light source, directionality, and intensity is constant on a clear day; you don’t have to worry about flash timing; the only thing you need to control for is your camera settings, etc.). I really don’t understand how they screwed this shoot so badly.Other things wrong with this cheap shoot:Out of focusLow contrastLow saturationBad white balanceGrainyThere’s really no excuse for this, it’s all very basic stuff. I took ONE photography class in college and I’ve only been shooting off and on for a couple of years, and I could still do a better shoot than this. It’s not that this person’s professor didn’t teach them how to retouch photos, their professor didn’t teach them how to shoot at all.
Bad, Chelsea, and Homeless: The Telegraph @Telegraph Follow Former rough sleeper Ed Sheeran wins permission for "anti-homeless" gates outside £8m London home Former rough sleeper Ed Sheeran wins permission for "anti-homeless" gates.. Pop superstar Ed Sheeran, who spent nights sleeping rough on the streets of London early in his career, has won planning permission to install "anti-homeless" r... telegraph.co.uk feminismisahatemovement: holybucketbatman: fuck-ler: capatalismnt: Please don’t pay for his music. also don’t listen to it, it’s extremely bad He’s wanting to do this to his home: He submitted the proposal to the Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council and the plan was rejected because the proposed four-foot-high railings (fence) and simple cast iron gate (which was chosen purely privacy and security for the front of the home) were considered “too domestic” looking for the former industrial area. The council gave Sheeran a list of options for privacy “railings”, and after changing the proposal Sheeran was given permission that was more in line with the neighbourhood, which is in a conservation area. A direct quote from Sheeran states: “Dear Natalie Edwards from The Sun newspaper. Your story is bollocks, I have done lots of work in the past for Crisis and Shelter and would never build railings outside my home for that reason. The reason was to keep the paps that you employ from being on my doorstep. Have a good day.” this comment has been substantiated by the local police and security companies that Sheeran and his neighbours have had to contact previously when paparazzi have been taking photographs not only of Sheeran’s house but inside his windows, and constantly knocking on his door and yelling outside his house. Think about this for a moment, a guy bought a house and fixed it up, he was trying to gain some privacy by asking for a simple fence and gate to indicate the property line and gain some distance from the paps, - which the police and council said was fine - and the newspapers who can no longer use these ill-gotten photos and are probably pissed have managed to spin this story to make it seem that this guy (whether you like his music or not), is an asshole and is anti-homeless. And you’re all eating this shit up and believing the newspapers, even though the Sun and Telegraph are well known across the UK for making shit up and lying. smh. These days you have to fact-check 97% of newspaper articles as much as reddit trolls.
Children, Donald Trump, and Fbi: Repost @time: At first glance, the man on our July 30, 2018, cover might seem familiar: it was created by morphing images of two of the world’s most recognizable men, President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The composite image, by visual artist @nancyburson, is meant to represent this particular moment in U.S. foreign policy, following the pair’s recent meeting in Helsinki. As our senior White House correspondent Brian Bennett writes in this week’s cover story: “A year and a half into his presidency, Trump’s puzzling affinity for Putin has yet to be explained. Trump is bruised by the idea that Russian election meddling taints his victory, those close to him say, and can’t concede the fact that Russia did try to interfere in the election, regardless of whether it impacted the outcome. He views this problem entirely through a political lens, these people say, unable or unwilling to differentiate between the question of whether his campaign colluded with Russia—which he denies—and the question of whether Russia attempted to influence the election.” Burson, who became well known for developing a technique to age faces, which is used by the FBI to find missing children, says the goal of her latest composite is to help readers “stop and think” when it comes to similarities between the two leaders. “What my work has always been about is allowing people to see differently,” she tells TIME. “The combining of faces is a different way for people to see what they couldn’t see before.” Read this week's full cover story on TIME.com. Ass, Bane, and Bitch: Mike Bird Birdyword This is so cool. The UK's current heatwave is exposing the outline of ancient hill forts and settlements. Soil quality today is still affected by iron age construction, so the grass on top changes colour at a different pace in the sun. Figuring out the places of ancient buildings — Roman, Celtic etc — tends to be a bit of a challenge. You have to consider the fact that the land has changed quite a lot over the centuries, with buildings popping up here and there, the topography changing dramatically, rising and falling like no one’s business, forests and cliffs being cut down or collapsing into the sea. Basically, the descriptions we have of sites in old ass texts can be a nightmare to match up to modern day locations. Some, like Chester and London, are easy. We kept building on them. It’s why there’s an amphitheatre in the middle of Chester and the Roman Wall. But in other parts of the country its a heck of a lot harder to locate and identify places. There’s this show called Time Team (or sth like that, it’s been a long long time) and they basically went around the UK digging up ancient sites that they tried to find through radar and aerial imagery etc etc. That requires a fair amount of planning and technology (aka the bane of field budgets everywhere). And even with those and all the nice little people digging away and the photographs and radar imagery, they still had issues figuring out the direction a building went in, which way the wall ran, if this was part of a house or not and so on. The heatwave and drought about to happen if it doesn’t frickin rain, is useful in that it allows us to see these sites without loads of planning and resources as they are today. We can identify places we’ve not been able to identify, locate sites we’ve wanted to locate for ages, because of the nifty little thing the dirt does when it gets hot and dry and like Satan’s breathing on everything. And that means that those sites can be logged down, and the modern topography won’t be such a bitch to try and figure out for locations because that heatwave has saved a lot of time and effort! Basically, don’t be surprised if in the next year or so, there are more reports and research papers about archaeological digsites in the UK from the Bronze Age or the Iron Age because this right here, this damned benighted hellish summer heat, will have been the cause of it all. Which makes me a little more tolerant of Satan and his dick ass breathing. This BBC article has a nice explanation on how exactly these marks form, as well. This so so cool @learnwelsh I am sure you have seen this, but just in case
Beyonce, Condom, and Dancing: It is illegal to smonk on these premises leg
asylunatic:

Someone asked me what I thought about surreal memes and I really liked the question so I basically wrote a whole essay to answer that question. It seemed relevant to this blog so I thought I might share it here, too:

Once upon a time I went to see an art show by Jordan Wolfson. Besides some insanity dancing sculptures, there was a video. It consisted of scenes with a poorly cgi’d condom that was leaking hearts whilst dancing through some rando’s childhood home (or so I interpreted that house). Other scenes included the artist dressed as a punk walking around some 2017 metropole city, like a total anachronism. The whole ordeal was accompanied by Beyonce music and displayed in a room covered in fake fur (ceiling included).

It stuck with me because I interpreted it as a post-modern-post-internet kinda art piece, that just was full of the empty imagery that is encountered now everywhere all the time. Meme culture is just a part of that.

There’s so many images splashed over you that all of them have lost a certain core impact. Repeated exposure numbs. And it is so available over the internet. So many pictures of someones darling dearest baby. So much hardcore anal porn. So many photographs by talented photographers. So much joy and darkness and beauty so readily available.

And that video made me think about all of this. Because what did that outdated house mean to me? Or the condom dancing with hearts? I did not bother about someone else’s house or the anachronist punk. But I was aching because surely it must be meaningful to someone.

When I came home from the show I spoke to my mom. She had seen it too and it turned out that she was way more informed about it. She told me it was actually a piece about something with aids and some social motivation ladidadida. Totally not what I had experienced it to be.

And so my point is, I guess, that memes can do this too. They create their own world where they get used again and again and again and the repetition makes them something new, with no ties to original content and intent. Images that create their own worlds and meanings and repetitions. (in conceptual art these are called simulacra)

I didn’t know surreal memes by name until you asked me, so I googled them guess what. I love them. They are so very much meme to the core: just imagery with no origin, just a canvas for my interpretation.
