appropriately-inappropriate: you-cannot-shut-me-up: talvin-muircastle: signoraviolettavalery: haunted-meat: dennator25: So this seems dumb…and it is…but it’s dumb with a purpose. I can almost guarantee you the exact line of reasoning that gets NASA engineers to 100. Ok, first of all assume the worst and assume she needs the max amount of tampons possible for all days. Now lets count it up. 7 days? Better be safe and make it 10. 3 tampons a day at worst? Better be safe and make it 5. So that gives us 50 tampons. Ok. Double it. And that’s how you get 100. It’s ridiculous, but NASA has a culture of “overengineer absolutely everything to do with human safety, and then design around it” which is actually pretty cool. Listen, I know this gets made fun of so much, but likeI am a woman who has periods and I have absolutely no idea how many tampons a woman requires in a week. I use primarily pads. But these men, at the least, ASKED her instead of making unfounded assumptions. Which would you rather be: A. The NASA Director Who Sent Too Many? B. The NASA Director Who Didn’t Send Enough? Fair point. It’ not like she could’ve popped over to the corner drugstore to buy more! Not to mention — space is a hostile environment with multiple dangers, so having multiple redundancies is a bonus. Tampons, being ultra-absorbent, reasonably clean, and conveniently sized, can be used to staunch nosebleeds, or could be used to block a leak in a pipe. You never know what you’ll need until you need it, and weirder shit has saved lives at NASA. : Sophia Benoit @1followernodad ok here's the deal. Yes it was dumb of NASA to ask Sally Ride if she needed 100 tampons for a 7-day mission, but I would have said "Actually I need 250" because that's free tampons from the government, babbbbyyy. 10:22 PM Aug 16, 2019 Twitter Web App appropriately-inappropriate: you-cannot-shut-me-up: talvin-muircastle: signoraviolettavalery: haunted-meat: dennator25: So this seems dumb…and it is…but it’s dumb with a purpose. This is amazing, just don’t read the username first.: jelloapocalypse S eternal-savvy-blog Follow sixpenceee These swimming pools with black tiles are my aesthetic. gabriel-patches-titanfeather Make the black tiles out of that black material that absorbs all light and swim over the void. ract facts-i-just-made-up Fun fact about Vantablack- Because it absorbs all light, it heats up very fast. If exposed to direct sunlight, it takes in all the UV and heat and contains them, and can reach heats well over 212°F, the boiling point of water. So if you did coat the pool in that material, the water would boil as soon as the sun touched it, killing everyone swimming in it. But that's not all. The flash boiling of an entire pool of chlorinated water would release the chlorine as gas, which would kill everyone within a 200ft radius of the pool. And it doesn't end there. The release of chlorine gas combined with the heat of the black tiles would be more than sufficient to fuse the boiled hydrogen ions with the chlorine, creating an explosive reaction with the nitrogen in the air. So shortly after everyone in the pool boils and everyone around the pool dies of chlorine gas poisoning, the region would explode with the force of a small atomic bomb (8kt for a pool like those pictured above), leveling about 50 city blocks. You'd think that would be bad enough, but get this- Such chemical explosions expel gamma rays. Gamma rays ionize hematite, which is the mineral from which the black material mentioned is made. This creates Scopohyoscpnol, a compound known as "The Zombie Drug" because it essentially erases the brain and induces cannibalistic tendencies in its victim. It can be transmitted through saliva, infecting all who are bitten within hours. So basically, if you did have Vantablack tiles in your pool, you would boil your friends, poison your neighbors, nuke your city, and condemn the globe to a zombie plague. But to be fair, it would look pretty cool. - meltinggoldanddippingthingsinit This is really well-done. I skipped over the username and kept believing even as it got ridiculous. Please just read the actual article. This guy obviously doesn’t claim to have discovered the coconut or it’s many different uses. He simply found a cheap way to mass produce pallets out of coconut husks. Of course making new things out of coconuts is an age old practice but it has never been done at this scale. This actually is a pretty cool thing because it makes use of millions of coconut husks that would have gone to waste and therefore saves more valuable resources like trees from being cut.
