That year, the nominees included DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince for โ€œParents Just Donโ€™t Understand,โ€ J.J. Fad for โ€œSupersonicโ€, Kool Moe Dee for โ€œWild Wild West,โ€ LLCoolJ for โ€œGoing Back to Cali,โ€ and SaltnPepa for โ€œPush It.โ€ โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € However, after learning the presentation of the award would not be televised, Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince led a boycott to protest the award show. Joining them, were several of the award nominees, including LL Cool J and Salt-n-Pepa, who released a statement saying, โ€œIf they donโ€™t want us, we donโ€™t want them.โ€ โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € At the time, the rap duo sat with Entertainment Tonight to discuss their decision to boycott, saying they wanted to stand up for their genre. โ€œWe donโ€™t have the problem with the Grammy as an award or the Grammys as an institution, we just had a problem with the 1989 design of the awards show,โ€ Smith said in a 1989 interview. โ€œWe chose to boycott.
