Africa, cnn.com, and Memes: White South African Woman Becomes First To Be Jailed For Hate Speech After Video Of Her Racist Rant Goes Viral; Sentenced To Three Years @balleralert White South African Woman Becomes First To Be Jailed For Hate Speech After Video Of Her Racist Rant Goes Viral; Sentenced To Three Years – blogged by @MsJennyb ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While racist, hate speech should never be tolerated, it is strictly prohibited in South Africa, as it is specifically excluded from the protection of free speech in the Constitution. In fact, according to the NY Times, back in 2016, the country released a draft law that would criminalize racism, meaning hate speech cases would go to criminal courts instead of civil and would be punishable by up to 10 years in prison. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since then, the nation has moved to implement the new rules and subsequently make an example of a white South African woman. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to CNN, Vicki Momberg was found guilty in November for crimen injuria, better known as the willful injuring of someone’s dignity in her racist verbal attack on a black police officer. The incident was caught on camera and quickly went viral. Since then, Momberg has been prosecuted and sentenced to three years in prison with one year suspended sentence, as she becomes the first South African to be jailed for the offense. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “We’ve had crimen injuria (cases before), but they have always been coupled by other charges. This is the first for a prison sentence for crimen injuria on its own,” a spokesperson said of the sentencing. “We are pleased with the sentence. This sends a clear message to those who undermine other people’s rights.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In the incident that led to the sentencing, Momberg was caught on video hurling racial slurs at South African police officers after they stopped to help her after her car was broken into in Johannesburg. According to reports, she repeatedly used words that were used to insult black people during the apartheid. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now, Momberg will have two years behind bars to think about her actions.

Bad, Family, and God: Justino Mora @JustinoMora1 Hector Barajas, a U.S. veteran, was deported in 2004. Today, our dear friend Hector won his battle against the U.S. government and will be allowed to return home, become a U.S. citizen, and reunite with his family! Hector will be sworn in as a citizen on April 13th in San Diego. Yass!! 💜🙌🏽😊 Via The San Diego Union-Tribune: "Hector Barajas, who became the face and voice of deported veterans after his own deportation, will be allowed to return to the place he considers home and become a U.S. citizen. Barajas burst into joyous tears seated on a couch Thursday afternoon in front of a large American flag as he read a document informing him that he would be sworn in as a citizen on April 13 in San Diego. “Fourteen years, man,” Hector said, his voice cracking. “Oh my God, this is great. Hallelujah! Hallelujah!”. “I’m coming home, mom!” he added. Barajas was honorably discharged from the Army in 2001 but struggled readjusting to civilian life. He took a plea deal for a charge of shooting at an occupied car in 2002. Because of that conviction, the government took away his green card, and he was deported in 2004 after he finished a prison sentence. “I made bad decisions,” Barajas-Varela told the Union-Tribune last year about that time in his life. “I put myself in that situation... I wouldn’t put myself in that situation again.” Barajas founded the Deported Veterans Support House, known to many as “the Bunker,” in 2013 to support deportees in Tijuana. He became a leader in a push for legislative changes to help U.S. military veterans who had not become citizens avoid deportation and to bring back those who were already removed. He was born in Mexico but raised in Los Angeles from age seven. Since he had a green card, he was able to serve in the Army and was part of the 82nd Airborne Division from 1995 to 2001. At the time, he thought he’d automatically become a citizen, but that was not the case. Members of the military are allowed to apply for citizenship with no waiting period. They still have to fill out the paperwork and pass the tests. Noncitizens who serve in the military are still at risk for deportation if they commit crimes that can cause the U.S. to revoke their green cards."

Facebook, Head, and Hillary Clinton: U.S. NEWs PHARMA BRO Mar 09 Martin Shkreli, aka 'Pharma Bro', sentenced to 7 years in prison for federal fraud charges. Martin Shkreli, also known as “Pharma Bro,” was sentenced to seven years in prison for federal fraud charges related to two hedge funds he ran and his former company, Retrophin. Shkreli became infamous for raising the price of the drug Daraprim by more than 5,000 percent while running another of his companies, Turing Pharmaceuticals, but was charged for unrelated crimes. Along with his 7-year conviction, Shkreli has been ordered to forfeit nearly $7.4 million, his ownership of a one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang Clan album, and a Picasso. This is far from the 12-18 months his defense team was arguing for, and includes a three-year probation period and an additional $75,000 fine. ___ Shkreli was convicted on three of eight counts of fraud for to lying to investors, but his behavior out of the courtroom also contributed to the sentencing. After his initial proceedings back in August, Shkreli offered up to $5,000 to any of his online followers who could pluck a hair from Hillary Clinton’s head. Additionally, he wrote on Facebook that if he were to be acquitted, he would pursue sexual relations with a particular female journalist. These two instances caused the judge to revoke his bail, sending him to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn where he’s been residing ever since. ___ Photo: Amr Alfiky-Reuters

Ja Rule, Memes, and Migos: PE.RI U.S. NEWS FYRE FESTIVAL FRAUD Mar 07 | Fyre Festival founder and CEO Billy McFarland pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud, facing up to ten years in prison. Fyre Festival founder and CEO, Billy McFarland, pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud yesterday, and will face up to a decade in prison. McFarland admitted in a Manhattan federal court that he had defrauded investors and falsified documents as a way to provide funding for his promised luxury Fyre Festival experience. The two wire fraud charges each carry a maximum of 20 years in prison, but McFarland made a plea agreement which may allow him to face only eight to ten years, with a fine of up to $300,000. McFarland’s sentence is scheduled for June 21st. ___ McFarland and fellow festival-promoter rapper Ja Rule made Fyre Festival out to be a “luxury concert” to take place on a small island in the Bahamas. The festival was to include performances from Blink-182, Migos, and Disclosure with extravagant housing accommodations and celebrity-chef-cooked meals. However, when concertgoers started to arrive to the festival, they were met with flimsy tents and boxed lunches and told that the musical acts had been canceled. Mcfarland told the judge, Naomi Reice Buchwald, of Federal District Court in Manhattan, that he had begun organizing the festival with good intentions but had “greatly underestimated the resources” it would take to deliver the experience that was advertised. ___ Photo: Mark Lennihan | AP
