Children, Cute, and Facts: pervocracy child handling for the childless urse My current job has me working with children, which is kind of a weird shock after years in environments where a young" patient is 40 years old. Here's my impressions so far Birth 1 year: Essentially a smail cute animal. Handle accordingly, gently and affectionately, but relying heavily on the caregivers and with no real expectation of cooperation Age 1-2: Hates you. Hates you so much. You can smile, you can coo, you can attempt to soothe they hate you anyway, because you're a stranger and you're scary and you're touching them. There's no winning this so just get it over with as quickly and non-traumatically as possible Age 3-5: Nervous around medical things, but possible to soothe. Easily upset but also easily distracted from the thing that upset them. Smartphone cartoons and who wants a stickerrl1?1? are key management techniques Age 6 10: Really cool, actually. I did not realize kids were this cool. Around this age they tend to be fairly outgoing, and super curious and eager to learn. Absolutely do not babytalk, instead, flatter them with how grown-up they are teach them some Fun Gross Medical Facts, and introduce potentially frightening experiences with hey, you want to see something really cool?" Age 11 14: Extremely variable. Can be very childish or very mature, or rapidly switch from one mode to the other. At this point you can almost treat them as an adult, just... a really sensitive and unpredictable adult Do not, under any circumstances, offer stickers. (But they might grab one out of the bin anyway.) Age 15-18: Basically an adult with severely limited life experience. Treat as an adult who needs a littie extra education with their care. Keep parents out of the room as much as possible, unless the kid wants them there. At this point you can go ahead and offer stickers again, because they'll probably think it's funny And they'll want one. Deep down, everyone wants a sticker nurse unlocks secret to raising kids

Computers, Pressure, and School: arionwind: autismserenity: arionwind: autismserenity: ARE computers flammable? 1 feel like they're probably not? This depends entirely on how much uncooked rice you have shoved in the floppy drive Ok 1 feel like there's a story behind this There is, yes! After I quit school, I worked briefly as a computer repair tech. Going to people's houses or businesses, fixing their various bugs, etc. While I would rapidly decide that field was not for me because of the one businessman who needed mult know, you push that button and that plastic holder thing with the hole comes out 1 think it is technically call the "Cup Depository Tray CD, right?), he is not the most memorable encounter. No, that goes to one of the nicest ladies I ever encountered on this job iple cup holde eplacements (you She called us out because her computer had stopped turning on, and wouldn't even make a noise when she tried to push the button. One day it had just shut off while she was using it and stubbornly refused to come back on, and could we please see what we could do to fix it? So I go out there expecting some wire had gotten loose and there was no power getting to the machine or something. It happens sometimes if a machine gets banged around enough, or if someone fiddles with it wrong or is careless putting it together, computers are finicky like that But as soon as I get to the box itself, 1 know it isn't that simple, because of the smell. I have smelled computers with dust all up in them, that isn't uncommon, but this is just vile and, more importantly, entirely new. I am now more curious than afraid, so 1 open it up and there is a mass of goopy off-white mush spilling all over everything, parts of it are burnt to circuits, there is almost nothing untouched by the mass. But by far the worst off is the A drive. That is the obvious source of the problem, and the thing has not "exploded", but more burst from the pressure of whatever this stuff was So 1 ask the woman if she had used the floppy drive recently and noticed any problems, and she says no, not until the whole machine stopped working. But I come to find out what she used it for Turns out this woman was a devout Shinto practitioner and believed that her computer (among other things) had a soul that needed to be respected an honored. Which, fair enough. But she chose to honor it by feeding it a grain of rice every time she had to wake it up and disturb For years this kindhearted woman had been putting a grain of rice into the A driv from sleep mode. And eventually that was enough pressure to break the drive and start spilling out onto the internal bits, where the heat melted it all and caused no end of problems ime she turned it on or woke t iing u After that it was a simple enough thing to explain that there are better ways to honor and take care of your computer's needs, what with virus scans or defrags and the like, but t poor device was entirely lost. I guess the moral of the story here is that you can try your best to be good and still wind up hurting people? Maybe? Or else it's that even the most horrible out of context problem isn't nearly as frustrating as one middle aged jerk who won't freaking listen when you tell him that CD trays are not for your dang coffee cups! One minute, 37 seconds My legs are shaking. Holy cow, there is no way I can do One minute, 29 secods. I glance around at the faces surrounding the room. Of this. None. course my Meeting would take place in the gross, overcrowded cafeteria. One minute, six seconds Somewhere within these four walls, someone has the exact same countdown on their wrist. They're going through the exact same pressure as me 54 seconds. Mom said I should be excited, not nervous. Yet I still find myself wiping my sweaty palms on my dress. I can't believe she talked me into wearing a dress. I mean, shouldn't my Soul Mate meet me as I normally am? All plain jeans, blah shirts, and wild brown curls? 30 seconds Something deep within me tells me to stand up. I do drawing the attention of my tablemates. They all know too They smile encouragingly up at me. I chew my lip nervously. 25 seconds That same feeling pulls me towards the center of the room. My stomach drops away from me as I take a step in that direction. 20 seconds I continue in that direction. With each step the tempo of my heart picks up. 19. Faster 18. Quicker 17. More rapid. 16. It's racing. Oh my god this is it. The moment my life changes forever My eyes search frantically around the cafeteria, searching for someone who looks as nervous as me. For someone who's heading towards their future with no sense of direction like me. 10 seconds The feeling directs me slightly to the left. I turn to accomodate 5. My heart has given up entirely 4. I have never forgotten the scientific principles behind it, and here’s why. There were 20-something of us in the classroom, all dying of sleep deprivation since it was the first day back to school, first class of the day. Mr. Moses was that teacher you weren’t sure how to deal with. I mean, the man’s name was Noah Eugene Moses, for starters. He drove a Harley to school, but also drove the bus. He had giant cokebottle glasses and a doofy mustache with shaggy ex-Beatles hair. He always wore suspenders and a grease-stained t-shirt because he had a potbelly and taught the shop/electrical classes. He wasn’t even really lecturing; he was throwing in tidbits of the syllabus in the midst of bad jokes and fun stories. We were all a bit nervous, because none of us had taken a class from him before, but his tests were legendary—nobody had ever made it out with an A (until I did, but that’s another story for another time and involves a really awesome bet and some hair cutting scissors). Well, as we were fighting to stay awake, and attempting to take notes of whatever he was talking about, he was pacing around the room from here to there, straightening things and moving stuff. He was very scatterbrained, and it was easy to tell from how he kept forgetting where he put his coke. Turns out, that was just a ruse. He had the can filled with just a tiny bit of water, and the things he was moving around were stacks of papers and books hiding the hot plate and water basin. So he set his coke can down onto the hot plate, continued talking loudly enough so we wouldn’t hear the water boiling, and then knocked it over really fast into the water basin. BANG!!!!!!!! Three girls fell out of their seats, one dude swore so violently I’m pretty sure the devil himself cringed, everyone at least jumped and screamed, and I actually broke my pen in half. See, with rapid decompression comes a vacuum, and with a vacuum comes a rushing of air that creates a massive sound. Think “thunder”. That’s the same principle behind it. His little tiny coke can of steam into a bucket of ice water, and we had a bang so loud the band teacher came in from across the hall to see “what was exploding today.” To which Mr. Moses responded, “Nothing, it imploded. Explosions are chapter 3.” And that’s when I knew it was going to be the best class ever. Read the whole thing

Being Alone, The Onion, and Tumblr: rushpartyofcanada: Justin Trudeau Unveils Plan To Meet Healthcare Needs Of Canada’s Aging Prog Rockers   OTTAWA—Saying it was only right to give back to those who had done so much for their country, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau unveiled a plan Thursday that would provide for the healthcare needs of the nation’s aging prog rockers.   Groups from Rush to Triumph to Harmonium are valued members of our society, and it’s our duty to ensure that they’re healthy enough to tour throughout their golden years,” said Trudeau at a press conference, explaining that a new bill slightly raising sales taxes would fully fund coverage for the increased expenses incurred by the nation’s elderly prog-rock vocalists, guitarists, and mellotron players. “While prog rockers represent over 5 percent of Canada’s GDP, they require an increasing amount of our healthcare funds, with The Guess Who and Voivod accounting for millions of dollars in annual medical spending alone. As band members get older and have trouble standing for the duration of 19-minute intros, remembering all the lyrics to their fantasy concept albums, or simply getting around a 40-piece drum kit, we owe it to them to do all we can.”   Trudeau’s plan has reportedly spurred calls for similar legislation in Norway, where citizens will increasingly have to contend with significant healthcare expenditures for their large and rapidly aging black metal population.  SOURCE: The Onion

Animals, Desperate, and Dogs: sistercrow stormcloak Cilford the Big Red Dog by Sandara OH MY GOD Can we have a Clifford live action movie? Not a kids movie either Like, Emily Elizabeth's parents are working for a government agency developing a super soldier serum. None of their testing is working and they start testing the serum on larger mammals in hopes of seeing better results. They inject a variety of animals, including a dog Nothing. They are desperate and on the verge of having their project shut down when they notice one of the test dogs is pregnant. It gives birth and they bring one of the puppies home for their daughter To their shock, the puppy they brought home starts to grow at an incredible rate, its fur mutating into a brilliant red as it does so. They are ecstatic because their research has finally seen a result, albeit one they weren't expecting. There is only one problem Clifford has become attached to Emily and refuses to leave her side Emily, too, has fallen in love with her new pet. They decide to let their project be canceled rather than try to separate the two. Unfortunately the government discovers their secret and begins a campaign to retrieve Clifford at any costs. During the initial conflict, Emily Elizabeth's parents are killed trying to help her and Clifford escape Emily and her dog flee into the wild. This sets the opening of the movie Over the course of the movie, Emily and Clifford are on the run and we see Emily grow into a young woman, everything about her honed into a survivalist expert. She and Clifford roam the backwoods constantly in fear of being captured. On one of her rare trips into towrn one day, Emily witnesses a bank robbery in progress involving multiple hostages. She calls Clifford and the two of them save the lives of the hostages but wreck the bank in the process. The local news capture footage of Clifford and it isn't long before the military arrives in town Emily wants to just run away again, but she sees that the military is destroying the town, driving people out of their homes and destroying property in their search. She decides that enough is enough and rides Clifford back into town and fights the military. Amidst the fighting a huge truck arrives. A general (who was her parent's superior officer) gets out and smirks. He tells Emily Elizabeth that Clifford's mother wasn't the only animal that gave birth to a litter of babies after receiving an injection. The back of the truck unfolds to reveal a massive tabby cat. The cat strains against its bindings and tears free immediately leaping onto a nearby group of soldiers and devouring them. Emily is horrified and orders Clifford to attack What follows is the dramatic battle between Clifford and the mutant cat. Clifford has strength, but the cat is too fast and agile. It looks like Clifford is down for the count, when the townsfolk, recognizing that Clifford is on their side, come to his aid. They distract the cat long enough for him to finish the beast off for good The military retreats, the general swearing vengeance on the two of them, and Emily and Clifford ride off into the night once more. But the legend of the big red dog has already started. And Emily Elizabeth knows that the day will come when she and Clifford will need to ride into battle against the forces of evil once more The credits roll Post credits, the screen fades to black for a moment. The sound of waves crashing on shore fills the air. The screen flashes brilliant white The light of the lighthouse moves on, revealing a rocky shore on a rainy day. The camera pans down to find Clifford and Emily gazing out to sea. A massive object hangs in the air off the coast, obscured in the clouds. A smaller object rapidly approaches them. It resolves itseltf into an advanced helicopter that silently lands just down the shore from them. Clifford lets out a low growl but Emily quiets him with a hand on his leg. A lone figure emerges from the aircraft, huddling his arms around himself to fight off the cold He approaches the two. His hair is short and somewhat curly. He wears glasses and a grey flannel shirt and seems unlikely to pose a threat to the two "Emily Elizabeth," he says over the sound of the crashing surf, "I worked with your parents. It's taken us a while to find you, after the Birdwell Island incident." "And who exactly is 'us'," she responds, eyes narrowing suspiciously. gnoring her question, the man continues. "Me and Clifford have a lot in common, actually. He smiles a little awkwardly, then presses on. "I was hoping you might be interested in meeting my boss. He's fairly excited to talk with you. You still haven't answered my question. Who are you and who do you work for?" The man smiles. "My name is Banner. And I'm hear to talk to you about the Avengers Initiative. mo re Fun on likealaugh.org Clifford the Big Red Dog

America, Cars, and Computers: Lee Fang @lhfang When robotics/driverless cars replace 1/3 jobs in America, and the political establishment does nothing, 2016 anger will look minuscule. 11/5/16, 10:03 PM 287 RETWEETS 497 LIKES c-bassmeow: cracked-pearl-78: c-bassmeow: Shit Luddites have been making this claim since the Industrial Revolution and they are no closer to being true. While you are historically correct, many economists, tech experts (people who work with tech who are far from luddites), and even CEO’s of tech companies believe that with the increasing automation  of jobs, many jobs will go to machines and there will be a great, massive reduction in jobs. Economists both from the left and right think this is to be true since it’s already happening just not to a large extent YET. Even the Bureau of labor statistics projects massive job loss due to human jobs becoming obsolete because technological changes that make it more efficient to replace humans with machines/computers since it will be cheaper, less error, and more efficient to replace humans since machines do not need to rest, do not have families, can be worked to their extreme, and can be programmed to do something correctly all the time. Moreover with the prospect of artificial intelligence which is being invested heavily, the change might manifest more rapidly.  One remedy for this from some economists from both the left and right is to enact a universal basic income. But while I appreciate your skepticism, which is very healthy because i too have a disdain for predictions with no basis in reality or that sound alarmist- to my knowledge there seems to be a slow, growing consensus from many fields that technological progress will replace many many human jobs the extent to which they will replace them is obviously debatable but the fact that they will be replaced to some degree that affects us seems to not be. I’m sorry I can’t cite sources I’m on my phone at the moment. Also,  throughout history technological progress has always replaced jobs.  There are less shoemakers now, farmers, cashiers, and countless other positions due to technological progress. Historically though,  we have been able to replace these jobs with new ones created through social change, technological change, and other factors but I and many think that we have hit a special time in history where technology will simply take over many more jobs than we can replace.  Technological progress is so advanced now that many products that we had to buy separately are now consolidated into one (an iphone is a fax machine, a phone, a computer, a camera, a tv, etc) and at times less people are needed in the aggregate to make these products.   Lastly, and this is just semantics,  I do believe that many techno-optimists believe technological progress automatically means “good” because we associate the word technology with human advancement and because “progress” is  a word that assumes benevolence, but this is not the case. Technological and scientific progress are not inherently good.  I am no luddite and I am a lover of science BUT science and technological advancement are sometimes removed and unaware of the unintended consequences created by their advancement since we rarely know all the social, economic, political, ramifications brought by said technology/scientific discoveries at the time of their creation and birth. So to assume everything will be a positive step forward is a naive assumption not supported by data but simply a subjective feeling of comfort and happiness because tech progress is being made. So i am no luddite, but I do think there is cause this time to be healthily afraid of what is to come.  A capitalist system has historically relied on humans but when those who own the means of production switch to a more inexpensive, rational, hard working, and anti-error prone substitute …. then what happens? It has never been done before so to assume you can use history as a guide (which is usually a very intelligent move) is somewhat misguided for what is to come has never happened before.
