Bodies , Children, and Climbing: Drowning in real life looks nothing like in the movies, and in fact many parents actually watch their children drown, having no idea that it's happening Ultrafacts.tumblr.com faikitty: mermaibee: ultrafacts: According to the CDC, in 10 percent of those drownings, the adult will actually watch the child do it, having no idea it is happening. Drowning does not look like drowning—Dr. Pia, in an article in the Coast Guard’s On Scene magazine, described the Instinctive Drowning Response like this: “Except in rare circumstances, drowning people are physiologically unable to call out for help. The respiratory system was designed for breathing. Speech is the secondary or overlaid function. Breathing must be fulfilled before speech occurs. Drowning people’s mouths alternately sink below and reappear above the surface of the water. The mouths of drowning people are not above the surface of the water long enough for them to exhale, inhale, and call out for help. When the drowning people’s mouths are above the surface, they exhale and inhale quickly as their mouths start to sink below the surface of the water. Drowning people cannot wave for help. Nature instinctively forces them to extend their arms laterally and press down on the water’s surface. Pressing down on the surface of the water permits drowning people to leverage their bodies so they can lift their mouths out of the water to breathe. Throughout the Instinctive Drowning Response, drowning people cannot voluntarily control their arm movements. Physiologically, drowning people who are struggling on the surface of the water cannot stop drowning and perform voluntary movements such as waving for help, moving toward a rescuer, or reaching out for a piece of rescue equipment. From beginning to end of the Instinctive Drowning Response people’s bodies remain upright in the water, with no evidence of a supporting kick. Unless rescued by a trained lifeguard, these drowning people can only struggle on the surface of the water from 20 to 60 seconds before submersion occurs.” This doesn’t mean that a person that is yelling for help and thrashing isn’t in real trouble—they are experiencing aquatic distress. Not always present before the Instinctive Drowning Response, aquatic distress doesn’t last long—but unlike true drowning, these victims can still assist in their own rescue. They can grab lifelines, throw rings, etc. Look for these other signs of drowning when persons are in the water: Head low in the water, mouth at water level Head tilted back with mouth open Eyes glassy and empty, unable to focus Eyes closed Hair over forehead or eyes Not using legs—vertical Hyperventilating or gasping Trying to swim in a particular direction but not making headway Trying to roll over on the back Appear to be climbing an invisible ladder So if a crew member falls overboard and everything looks OK—don’t be too sure. Sometimes the most common indication that someone is drowning is that they don’t look like they’re drowning. They may just look like they are treading water and looking up at the deck. One way to be sure? Ask them, “Are you all right?” If they can answer at all—they probably are. If they return a blank stare, you may have less than 30 seconds to get to them. And parents—children playing in the water make noise. When they get quiet, you get to them and find out why. Source/article: [x] Follow Ultrafacts for more facts! BOOST FOR THE SUMMER. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. Can I just say thank you to OP for putting such a detailed description on this? I’ve been a lifeguard for 6 years now and of all the saves I’ve done, maybe two or three had people drowning in the stereotypical thrashing style. And even those, like the save I made last weekend, it was exactly like OP describes where the person’s head is going in and out of the water but it isn’t long enough to get any air. Mostly you recognize drowning by the look on someone’s face. If someone looks wide eyed and terrified or confused, chances are they’re drowning. That look of “oh shit” is pretty easily recognizable. And even if you can’t tell for sure: GO AFTER THEM ANYWAY. I’ve done “saves” where a kid was pretending to drown and I mistook it for real drowning, but that’s preferable to a kid ACTUALLY drowning. Also please remember that even strong swimmers can drown if they have a medical emergency, get cramps, or get too tired. If your friend knows how to swim but they’re acting funny get them to land. And even if someone can respond when you ask them if they need help, if they say they do need help? GO HELP THEM. However . If the victim is a stranger, I can’t recommend trying to get them. Lifeguards literally train to escape “attacks,” because people who are drowning can freak the fuck out and grab you and make YOU drown as well. If you do go in after someone, take hold of them from the back and talk to them the whole time. IF YOU ARE GRABBED: duck down into the water as low as you can get. The person is panicking and won’t want to go under water and should release you. Shove up at their hands and push them away from you as you duck under. Don’t die trying to save someone else. Please guys, read and memorize this post. Not all places have lifeguards. Being able to recognize drowning is such an important skill to have and you can save someone’s life.

Community, Doctor, and Family: Anti-vaxx mom abandons movement after all seven her of her kids get whooping cough 画20 TOM BOGGION O APR 2015 AT 16.00 E Smawa "6 Adrian Hareweo CKB Omawa mother Tara Hls CBC soreeshot hatey-mchaterson: timemachineyeah: a-spoon-is-born: funoftheday: You don’t say. For the record, she actually abandoned the movement BEFORE they all got whooping cough, but abandoned it too late. There’d been a breakout of measles in her area that caused her to reassess, and she and her doctor had already drafted and started a catch-up vaccination schedule, but her kids caught whooping cough just before it could be started. Then she wrote a blog post for The Scientific Parent explaining how she and her husband had come to wrong decisions in the first place, how they changed their mind, the consequences they suffered as a result, and asking other parents to please vaccinate their kids. And now she’s an activist for destroying the misinformation of anti-vaxxers, and reaching out to anti-vaxxers because she’s understands their fears but knows their kids deserve better.  She was trying to the best for her kids and just didn’t know how to interpret the validity of information or its sources, an actual skill that can be actually difficult and that is under-taught and a necessary first step to being able to trust vaccination research, so chose no action over taking an action she wasn’t sure of. She kept looking into it with family and friends and even eventually came to the right conclusion before her kids became sick, but it was still too late. Honestly it was pretty brave of her to publicly admit she was wrong. She could have just quietly vaccinated her kids and not become a national news story, but instead she spoke out, even saying “I’m writing this from quarantine, the irony of which isn’t lost on me.” and also “I am not looking forward to any gloating or shame as this ‘defection’ from the antivaxx camp goes public, but, this isn’t a popularity contest.  Right now my family is living the consequences of misinformation and fear.  I understand that families in our community may be mad at us for putting their kids at risk.” She understood the consequences and still put herself and her story out there.  You know what, it does take a big person to admit they were wrong so publicly and work to undo the harm. I believe I made fun of her in the past, but timemachineyeah changed my mind.

Best Friend, Detroit, and Life: fragilefox: bemymonument: bemymonument: My best friend had a horrible top surgery experience, and his surgeon doesnrsquo;t seem to care. He is raising money to get a second opinion and (hopefully) another surgery to fix what his first surgeon did. Anyone can look at these pictures and realize that is NOT right. So even if you cannot donate, please reblog and share this. My best friend is entirely broken over this and is strongly fighting a deep depression because of it. He deserves happiness, and was so close to finally reaching it before this happened. I want nothing more than for him to love himself when he sees himself, including with his shirt off. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read, share, and/or donate! http://www.gofundme.com/5s6wm6o PLEASE SHARE, it’s not even just about the money. Eli wants to get the word out and possibly prevent this happening to others! [ID: Two pictures of Eli’s chest post-op. The results are not typical for a transgender mastectomy, as there is no masculinization and the shape of the original chest is visible. it is not typical cancer mastectomy or breast reduction results either; the nipple grafts were done directly on top of the incision site, and the sutures were done poorly. there is a great deal of scarring. end ID] here is the text from the gofundme, with spaces added for accessibility: So as most people know I recently got top surgery on March 13th. I have waited my whole life for this surgery and I couldn’t wait to see the final results. I was supposed to get my surgery done with Dr. Doreen Ganos, a transgender specialized surgeon at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI, she was amazing at what she does and had great results. Sadly two weeks before my actual surgery she ended up passing away. I got passed onto a surgeon who was taking over her patients. I met with him and he had nothing but great things to say, one of which was “my goal is to have minimal scarring for you, so when you are on the beach no one will question your chest”. Any trans guy would jump for joy at that remark so I felt very confident still going through with surgery with him. However, the outcome turned out not what I expect nor have I ever seen before, as pictured. The surgeon chose to not use drains after the procedure, he stated that it was not necessary. He also didn’t leave me with any sort of binding after the surgery other than this sticky tape over my chest, that I had to remove myself at home. And when I removed the tape at home after a week post op, I had never been so let down in my entire life. I had no words, other than “what the hell”. I’m not sure what procedure he was trying to do, but clearly if I was on the beach, certainly I would get questioned with my chest. Since March I have been on antibiotics three times due to having infections. Along with having to get a revision that didn’t really do much other than make my chest flatter(which is nice) but still very deformed, as also pictured. I also have been through multiple shirts due to leaking fluid…which could’ve been avoided had he put drains in. It has come to the point that the best surgery of my life has turned out to be the worst thing to happen to me. My mental health has declined severely, and I have come to conclusion that I need to get a second opinion, along with a new surgery to fix this outcome. Another surgery, taking off time from work again, and more medical bills will be very expensive and I cannot afford it myself. So I am reaching out to the public and hopefully me finally sharing my story may help a little, rather than me hiding the severity of it. Any little donation helps or even reading my story and sharing it, I truly am so thankful in advance for anyone and everyone who comes across this page. edit: the surgeon that did this is Dr. Herman Houin at Henry Ford, Fairlane Dearborn location
Definitely, Taken, and Target: Tips for trying on and safely using your new binder! 1. Please be mindful of our exchange process, so please make sure you try your binder on when you are clean. Deodorant marks and dirt stains are taken into account during the inspection 2. Wet skin and binders do not mix ! Make sure you are dry before trying on the binder to prevent excess pulling and stress on the material 3. Our binders were designed to be pulled on over your nead like a tank top. Do not try to pull it over your waist and hip area. For the tanks style, hold the compression panel when you pull on your binder as it is the most durable area 4. Don't force it! Your binder is meant to have a snug fit, but if it doesn't fit over your shoulders, don't force it. Pack it up for an exchange and we will make sure you get the right size :+ 5. Take a day or two off of binding each week! Give your body time to rest! 6. We recommend binding 8 - 10 hours a day at most; take a break during the day if you can. <3 If you have any questions or concerns about your binder don't hesitate to reach out! support@gc2b.info trans-boi-lou: Binding tips from gc2b for all you trans dudes and other individuals who bind! Drunk, Friends, and God: Sprint Wi-Fi 2:25 PM Tweet tl saint lil rogue Retweeted Noob Saibot @Mommaafro So a woman's idea of being friends is being friends? Chef Nol @UR_SO_ COOL_NOL A woman's idea of "Let just be friends" is "Hey listen to all my problems and keep me company...while I have sex with someone else." 9/14/17, 9:26 AM 115 Retweets 168 Likes Tweet your reply 2 sounddesignerjeans: princess-mint: alarajrogers: niambi: I’m???? Oh my God this actually explains so much. So there’s a known thing in the study of human psychology/sociology/what-have-you where men are known to, on average, rely entirely on their female romantic partner for emotional support. Bonding with other men is done at a more superficial level involving fun group activities and conversations about general subjects but rarely involves actually leaning on other men or being really honest about emotional problems. Men use alcohol to be able to lower their inhibitions enough to expose themselves emotionally to other men, but if you can’t get emotional support unless you’re drunk, you have a problem. So men need to have a woman in their lives to have anyone they can share their emotional needs and vulnerabilities with. However, since women are not socialized to fear sharing these things, women’s friendships with other women are heavily based on emotional support. If you can’t lean on her when you’re weak, she’s not your friend. To women, what friendship is is someone who listens to all your problems and keeps you company. So this disconnect men are suffering from is that they think that only a person who is having sex with you will share their emotions and expect support. That’s what a romantic partner does. But women think that’s what a friend does. So women do it for their romantic partners and their friends and expect a male friend to do it for them the same as a female friend would. This fools the male friend into thinking there must be something romantic there when there is not. This here is an example of patriarchy hurting everyone. Women have a much healthier approach to emotional support – they don’t die when widowed at nearly the rate that widowers die and they don’t suffer emotionally from divorce nearly as much even though they suffer much more financially, and this is because women don’t put all their emotional needs on one person. Women have a support network of other women. But men are trained to never share their emotions except with their wife or girlfriend, because that isn’t manly. So when she dies or leaves them, they have no one to turn to to help with the grief, causing higher rates of death, depression, alcoholism and general awfulness upon losing a romantic partner.  So men suffer terribly from being trained in this way. But women suffer in that they can’t reach out to male friends for basic friendship. I am not sure any man can comprehend how heartbreaking it is to realize that a guy you thought was your friend was really just trying to get into your pants. Friendship is real. It’s emotional, it’s important to us. We lean on our friends. Knowing that your friend was secretly seething with resentment when you were opening up to him and sharing your problems because he felt like he shouldn’t have to do that kind of emotional work for anyone not having sex with him, and he felt used by you for that reason, is horrible. And the fact that men can’t share emotional needs with other men means that lots of men who can’t get a girlfriend end up turning into horrible misogynistic people who think the world owes them the love of a woman, like it’s a commodity… because no one will die without sex. Masturbation exists. But people will die or suffer deep emotional trauma from having no one they can lean on emotionally. And men who are suffering deep emotional trauma, and have been trained to channel their personal trauma into rage because they can’t share it, become mass shooters, or rapists, or simply horrible misogynists. The only way to fix this is to teach boys it’s okay to love your friends. It’s okay to share your needs and your problems with your friends. It’s okay to lean on your friends, to hug your friends, to be weak with your friends. Only if this is okay for boys to do with their male friends can this problem be resolved… so men, this one’s on you. Women can’t fix this for you; you don’t listen to us about matters of what it means to be a man. Fix your own shit and teach your brothers and sons and friends that this is okay, or everyone suffers. The next time a guy says, “What? You don't want to be my friend?” I’ll text him this and then ask if he really wants to be friends or just have another potential girlfriend. y’all I am living for these analyses where the new way to fight the patriarchy is to teach men to love each other and themselves

Apparently, Crazy, and Facebook: report-a-predator Anonymous asked crazy-possum-lady is a zoophilia and animal rapist who lives in australia. It's even worse because she works for an animal rescue and has pets. You can find her blog by googling it but you cannnot find it you use the blog search on tumblr. report-a-predator answered Thank You!!l Okay guys Alright so if you guys can report them to the Australian authorities.- mod sparks deuslock: but-call-me-kat: Sorry to break the news, but you did not report the person behind that blog. Instead, you reported me. And I am still suffering the consequences. I did not run that blog. Yes, they used my image. All my pictures from Facebook and Instagram, my statuses, even the captions. And then interspersed them with animal abuse images, fantasies about beastiality, other fucking disgusting sentiments. You people found my Facebook, where I listed my wildlife rescue group. You didn’t think, for a moment, that it was odd that none of these abuse fantasies appeared on Facebook. A girl who was apparently willing to put her face, her location, the names of her family her local fucking vet clinic on her zoophilic Tumblr page, strangely had none of these thoughts on a just-as-public Facebook page. Not one single person thought, “This is a bit odd, maybe I should reach out to this person just to confirm that it’s them.” You people, high on some fantastical idea of justice, called the authorities. And I did not even know about the existence of the blog until the RSPCA showed up on my doorstep one night. THEY, thankfully, had the sense to believe me. As soon as they showed me the page and I broke down in tears, they got the idea. So they told me to go to the police. The police palmed me off to ACORN (a cybercrime body) who dismissed the case because “nobody in the images was under the age of 18.” Meanwhile, Tumblr had taken the page down, only for it to resurface again last year. I then pursued a civil case. Emailed lawyers in my local city. They advised me only to take it to Tumblr, who shut down the page a second time. No further action was taken. I never received another call from wildlife rescue because I was unable to prove that I did not run this disgusting blog. Wildlife is my biggest passion in the world and I may never work in that industry until I can clear my name. So I messaged this page - report-a-predator. They told me to prove it - fair enough. So I sent them EVERYTHING. The screenshots, my emails to ACORN and SAPOL and Tumblr and the lawyers. They did not respond. I emailed them again, begging them to clear my name. They did not respond. I am furious. I am fucking enraged that this post even still exists on their page, because the actions of this so-called “justice group” has directly impacted the life of an innocent person and they will do nothing to acknowledge it. Not even respond to a simple email. Not even take down the incriminating post. I know my blog is tiny, I know nobody follows it, I know this will probably never be seen. But I am not going to be silent. If you’re ever caught up in a whirlwind of pseudo-justice, maybe check the facts first. Oh, look, another example of callous culture ruining people’s fucking lives.
Being Alone, Crazy, and Facebook: A mother-of-two suffering from postpartum depression has posed for a powerful photoshoot featuring two vastly different parenting scenarios to show what it is really like to live with the mood disorder Kathy DiVincenzo with Paul DiVincenzo and Danielle Fantis May 2 at 7-27am- Chances are, you're feeling pretty uncomfortable right now (trust me I am too). I'm going to challenge you to push past the discomfort soclety has placed on postpartum mental illness and hear me out May has been declared Postpartum Depression Awareness Month and as someone with diagnosed postpartum depression, anxiety, and OCD I feel like it's time to show you what that can really look like, not just the side of me that's Facebook worthy The truth is, both of these pictures represent my life depending on the day. I would only ever comfortably share one of these realities though and that's the problem. The only thing more exhausting than having these conditions is pretending daily that I don't. I work twice as hard to hide this reality from you because I'm afraid to make you uncomfortable. I'm afraid you'll think I'm weak, crazy, a terrible mother, or the other million things my mind convinces me of and I know Im not alone in those thoughts. We need to stop assuming that the postpartum period is always euphoric, because for 1 in 7 it's not. We need to start asking new parents how they're doing in a deeper way than the normal, "so how are you doing? that triggers the knee jerk, "everything's greatl" response. We need to learn the signs, symptoms, risk factors, and support plans for postpartum conditions. We need to break the stigma and BEndTheSilence by sharing our stories and letting others know theyre not alone. If you have had a postpartum mood disorder please share your story below, or simply postto show you can relate. Let's show athers that they don't have to suffer in silence n case no one has told you, you're doing an amazing job. You are loved and you are worthy. You're nat alone. Being Alone, Best Friend, and Friends: Marleen Brooks 25 at 5:49pm . Came home to this note from a lady that lives down the street from me. Makes my heart sad, but on the bright side it looks ike I will be getting new friend When you're an adult, it's pretty hard to find new people, but imagine being elderly and havingno oneleft. That's terrifying. That's the situation that a 90-year-old woman in California found herself in, so she took a positive step to combat her isolation and loneliness. She wrote a note to a neighbour ん「 This is the note that Marleen Brooks came home to, It says Would you consider to become my friend. rm 90 years old-live alone. All my friends have passed away. I'm so lonesome and scared. Please -I pray for someone. In any case, Marleen wasn't going to let this letter go unanswered. She shared the letter. Then she made a plan to make a new friend. Marleen went out to grab some cupcakes and went down the street that evening to introduce herself. She brought along her best friend so that Wanda could meet two new people. She wrote again after her friend-making party Earier today I posted about how Marleen Brooks came home and found a nate from an elderly neighbor named Wanda. It said: Would you consider to become my friend I'm 90 years old- live alone and all my friends have passed away. I'm so lonesome and scared. Tonight Marleen (on the left with her best friend on the right] went over to Wanda's house and met her She brought her some cupcakes too. Afterward Marleen wrate to me about what happened: She's such a sweet lady! And she was over the moon when we came over. Wanda told me: 1 hope you didn't think I was stupid for writing you, but I had to do Thank you so much for coming over I've lived here for 50 years and don't know any of my neighbors." I also made sure that wanda knew she can call us at anytime and that be back to spend time with her! I'm sure Wanda and I wll have some great times. -Marieen Brooks I love this story And I'm so happy for Wanda But as I sald in my tirst post, there are so many others out there who are lanely just Eke Wanda. I would ask that maybe you consider knocking on their door and saying hi I know it would mean the world to them. And who knows, maybe you'll make a new friend Can you imagine living in one place for over 50 years and not krnowing anybody? I can't. That's too long to be alone, without anyone to talk to or to keep you company. Especially when you have the ailments that Wanda has. I cant imagine being in her position. We all need some compassion and kudos to Wanda for reaching out and asking for what she absolutely deserves. Apparently, Children, and Christmas: awkward. @howtobeprada imagine if you called the wrong number and "mom?" "no this is Morgan freeman" Reply Retweet Favorite voroxpete: arctic-hands: therobotmonster: kuroba101: prismatic-bell: HERE’S THE THING THOUGH I used to work for a call center and I was doing a political survey and I called this number that was randomly generated for me and the way our system worked was voice-activated so when the other person said hello you’d get connected to them, so I just launch right into my “Harvard University and NPR blah blah blah” thing and then there’s this long pause and I think the person’s hung up even though I didn’t hear a click And then I hear “you shouldn’t be able to call this number.” So I apologize and go into the preset spiel about because we aren’t selling anything, etc. etc. and the answer I get is “No, I know that. What I mean is that it should be impossible for you to call this number, and I need to know how you got it.” I explain that it’s randomly generated and I’m very sorry for bothering him, and go to hang up. And before I can click terminate, I hear: “Ma’am, this is a matter of national security.” I accidentally called the director of the FBI. My job got investigated because a computer randomly spit out a number to the Pentagon. This is my new favourite story. When I was in college I got a job working for a company that manages major air-travel data. It was a temp gig working their out of date system while they moved over to a new one, since my knowing MS Dos apparently made me qualified. There was no MS Dos involved. Instead, there was a proprietary type-based OS and an actually-uses-transistors refrigerator-sized computer with switches I had to trip at certain times during the night as I watched the data flow from six pm to six AM on Fridays and weekends. If things got stuck, I reset the server.  The company handled everything from low-end data (hotel and car reservations) to flight plans and tower information. I was weighed every time I came in to make sure it was me. Areas of the building had retina scanners on doors.  During training. they took us through all the procedures. Including the procedures for the red phone. There was, literally, a red phone on the shelf above my desk. “This is a holdover from the cold war.” They said. “It isn’t going to come up, but here’s the deal. In case of nuclear war or other nation-wide disaster, the phone will ring. Pick up the phone, state your name and station, and await instructions. Do whatever you are told.” So my third night there, it’s around 2am and there’s a ringing sound.  I look up, slowly. The Red phone is ringing. So I reach out, I pick up the phone. I give my name and station number. And I hear every station head in the building do the exact same. One after another, voices giving names and numbers. Then silence for the space of two breaths. Silence broken by… “Uh… Is Shantavia there?” It turns out that every toll free, 1-900 or priority number has a corresponding local number that it routs to at its actual destination. Some poor teenage girl was trying to dial a friend of hers, mixed up the numbers, and got the atomic attack alert line for a major air-travel corporation’s command center in the mid-west United States. There’s another pause, and the guys over in the main data room are cracking up. The overnight site head is saying “I think you have the wrong number, ma’am.” and I’m standing there having faced the specter of nuclear annihilation before I was old enough to legally drink. The red phone never rang again while I was there, so the people doing my training were only slightly wrong in their estimation of how often the doomsday phone would ring.  Every time I try to find this story, I end up having to search google with a variety of terms that I’m sure have gotten me flagged by some watchlist, so I’m reblogging it again where I swear I’ve reblogged it before. But none of these stories even come close to the best one of them all; a wrong number is how the NORAD Santa Tracker got started. Seriously, this is legit. In December 1955, Sears decided to run a Santa hotline.  Here’s the ad they posted. Only problem is, they misprinted the number.  And the number they printed?  It went straight through to fucking NORAD.  This was in the middle of the Cold War, when early warning radar was the only thing keeping nuclear annihilation at bay.  NORAD was the front line. And it wasn’t just any number at NORAD.  Oh no no no. Terri remembers her dad had two phones on his desk, including a red one. “Only a four-star general at the Pentagon and my dad had the number,” she says. “This was the ‘50s, this was the Cold War, and he would have been the first one to know if there was an attack on the United States,” Rick says. The red phone rang one day in December 1955, and Shoup answered it, Pam says. “And then there was a small voice that just asked, ‘Is this Santa Claus?’ ” His children remember Shoup as straight-laced and disciplined, and he was annoyed and upset by the call and thought it was a joke — but then, Terri says, the little voice started crying. “And Dad realized that it wasn’t a joke,” her sister says. “So he talked to him, ho-ho-ho’d and asked if he had been a good boy and, ‘May I talk to your mother?’ And the mother got on and said, ‘You haven’t seen the paper yet? There’s a phone number to call Santa. It’s in the Sears ad.’ Dad looked it up, and there it was, his red phone number. And they had children calling one after another, so he put a couple of airmen on the phones to act like Santa Claus.” “It got to be a big joke at the command center. You know, ‘The old man’s really flipped his lid this time. We’re answering Santa calls,’ ” Terri says. And then, it got better. “The airmen had this big glass board with the United States on it and Canada, and when airplanes would come in they would track them,” Pam says. “And Christmas Eve of 1955, when Dad walked in, there was a drawing of a sleigh with eight reindeer coming over the North Pole,” Rick says. “Dad said, ‘What is that?’ They say, ‘Colonel, we’re sorry. We were just making a joke. Do you want us to take that down?’ Dad looked at it for a while, and next thing you know, Dad had called the radio station and had said, ‘This is the commander at the Combat Alert Center, and we have an unidentified flying object. Why, it looks like a sleigh.’ Well, the radio stations would call him like every hour and say, ‘Where’s Santa now?’ ” Terri says. For real. “And later in life he got letters from all over the world, people saying, ‘Thank you, Colonel,’ for having, you know, this sense of humor. And in his 90s, he would carry those letters around with him in a briefcase that had a lock on it like it was top-secret information,” she says. “You know, he was an important guy, but this is the thing he’s known for.” “Yeah,” Rick [his son] says, “it’s probably the thing he was proudest of, too.” So yeah.  I think that might be the best wrong number of all time.
