Bailey Jay, College, and Drive By: 2 hours ago 545 Likes Brazilian rights activist Marielle Franco assassinated in drive- by shooting Rio city councillor Marielle Franco was killed in a targeted shooting on Wednesday night. She was an outspoken critic of police violence and deploying the army into poor neighbourhoods of Rio MarielleFranco Rest in power! 💔🙏🏾 . Via The Root: "Marielle Franco, 38, a black politician from Rio de Janeiro, died fighting for the rights of women and favela dwellers. As a councilwoman from the Maré favela, she denounced the police brutality that favela residents, most of them black, regularly experienced. . On Wednesday around 9:20 p.m., armed men gunned the councilwoman down in her car in the center of Rio de Janeiro with nine shots—four to the head. Her driver, Anderson Pedro Gomes, also died. She had just left an event that she organized about black women’s empowerment. . Her death touched so many people that supporters organized vigils and protests in more than 20 cities across Brazil. Most of these protests were against the genocide of black people in Brazil. For Afro-Brazilians, Franco proved that a black person from a favela could be educated, have dignity and also fight against the social injustice that they suffer from every day. For women, she proved that they could overcome sexism and machismo in Brazil. But her death is hitting Afro-Brazilian women, who suffer the most from Brazil’s violent, racist and sexist society, the hardest. . “She died because she was a combative black woman,” said Lua Nascimento, an Afro-Brazilian college classmate of Franco’s who attended a protest on her behalf in Salvador, Brazil. “She was executed because she was a black favela dweller who fought against the murder of black favela dwellers. The genocide of the black population continues in this country. ” . Thousands of people gathered in front of Rio de Janeiro’s council chambers to pay homage to Franco, who was buried Thursday night. To show their digital support for her, Brazilians are changing their Facebook profile photos to those of Franco and using the hashtag MariellePresente, which translates to “Marielle is here.” . Amnesty International, the longtime leader of a campaign against the genocide of black people in Brazil, demanded that her death be rigorously investigated. With those nine shots, Franco became one more statistic in this genocide. Just over 50 percent of Brazil’s population of 200 million is black ... [Continued in comments]

Bailey Jay, Children, and Community: ProtectTPS ElSalvador& Honduras& Nicaragua& Haiti&Yemen& Syria&Nepal& Somalia&Sudan &SouthSudan& Liberia&Guinea &SierraLeone “Always remember that the greatest act of solidarity is showing up, and that goes beyond a like, a tweet, a post or a comment.” Repost @IvanCejatv: “Today we stood in solidarity with immigrants from 13 countries that are impacted by TPS. These countries are El Salvador 🇸🇻, Honduras 🇭🇳, Nicaragua 🇳🇮, Haiti 🇭🇹, Yemen 🇾🇪, Syria 🇸🇾, Nepal , Somalia 🇸🇴, Sudan 🇸🇩, South Sudan 🇸🇸, Liberia 🇱🇷, Guinea 🇬🇳, and Sierra Leone 🇸🇱. These countries should also stand united and be acknowledged and that’s why I designed this shirt. 👕 . . I did not immigrate to the US from any of these countries. I am an undocumented immigrant originally from Michoacán, México 🇲🇽. I am a DACA beneficiary and I would be eligible for the DreamAct. However, some of my close friends and people in my community are greatly affected by the recent announcements and attacks on TPS. The saying goes — “an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us” & we can’t take this message lightly. RiseUpAsOne . . This is beyond 200,000 Salvadorans 🇸🇻 with TPS. This is about 192,000 citizen children that will also be affected. This is about the 59,000 Haitians 🇭🇹 - 2,000 Nicaraguans 🇳🇮 - from Sudan 🇸🇩 and the millions of us that call them neighbors, family and friends. ProtectTPS‬ . . Always remember that the greatest act of solidarity is showing up, and that goes beyond a like, a tweet, a post or a comment.” . . *Common TPS Question: If they’ve been here so long why haven’t they just become citizens? . . Answer: Because citizenship isn’t like ordering a pumpkin spice latte & you try ordering a pumpking spice latte when they aren’t being sold. There isn’t a pathway to citizenship for them.

cnn.com, Friends, and Memes: "The President Of The United States Is Racist," But We Already Knew @balleralert “The President Of The United States Is Racist,” But We Already Knew - blogged by @MsJennyb ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “The President Of The United States is racist,” said Don Lemon in the opening of his show, just hours after reports surfaced of Trump’s disparaging comments about immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African nations. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Although Lemon’s declaration was something most Americans were aware of, the surprise came from Lemon’s decision to put it out on the table. According to reports, Broadcast journalist usually tread lightly on topics such as racism, as it can be seen differently to different people. But, Lemon, as well as Anderson Cooper, who doubled down on the declaration, used the CNN platform to let Americans know that “We told you so.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The powerful statement by Lemon, propelled a Trumpisracist hashtag on Twitter. While many Americans used the tag to denounce Trump’s racist remarks, Trump supporters and Twitter bots, used the hashtag to defend the Celebrity-in-Chief. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Although Trump has denied making comments that have reportedly been blown out of proportion by the media, lawmakers who were in attendance did not deny the “shithole” remark. In fact, some of Trump’s Fox News friends defended the statement, questing the need for immigration if the countries that immigrants are leaving aren’t “shithole” countries. What are your thoughts?
