Candy, Memes, and Nationwide: Mall of America Honors Diversity and Hires the First Black Santa @balleralert Mall of America Honors Diversity and Hires the First Black Santa-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s officially that time of year when children will crowd in malls across the country to have their picture taken with SantaClaus, and for the first time, visitors of MallofAmerica will have their photos taken with a black Santa. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “This is a long time coming,” Landon Luther told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Luther is the co-owner of the Santa Experience, a photo studio that offers families the chance to have a one-on-one meet-and-greet with the jolly good fellow. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "We want Santa to be for everyone, period,” Luther said. So this past spring, Luther set out on a nationwide search for a Santa of color. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “It was like finding a needle in a haystack,” he said. But eventually Luther found the perfect one at a Santa Claus convention held in July in Branson, Missouri. It was there that Luther met LarryJefferson — the only Santa of color out of the almost 1,000 Santas in attendance. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Jefferson is a retired U.S. Army veteran from Texas who has been playing the role of St. Nick since 1999. While he may be the first black Santa for the Mall of America, Jefferson says in his experience, kids don’t see color when it comes Santa Claus. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “What they see most of the time is this red suit and candy,” he said. “I’m just a messenger to bring hope, love and peace to girls and boys.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While many parents who arrived at the MallOfAmerica Thursday were excited to show their kids that Santa comes in all colors, not everyone was as thrilled about the news. Star Tribune editor Scott Gillespie tweeted that he had to disable the comments on the "Black Santa” story due to the high amounts of backlash.
