Why do parents always assume their kid is lazy when they get bad grades? Like maybe help your kids by talking to them, not punishing them. This is how I failed math and didn’t even know I had number dyslexia for years.

When my sister was in high school she struggled a LOT with math. Like I know a lot of people find it really difficult (myself included), but I mean she was really really bad at it. She has always been a very smart, creative and sensitive person, but math made no sense to her, to the point where passing seemed impossible.
I will always remember that twice a week, around the kitchen table, my sister would sit down with my dad for hours, and they would try to work out her math homework. I should mention that my dad is an artist, and art teacher. Truth be told I think he struggled with math just as much if not more then she did. But twice a week you could hear them downstairs, going back and forth, trying to figure it out together. Some nights would be smooth and easy, some nights I could hear them arguing from one floor up about factors or equations, not in anger but in mutual frustration.
I remember the day that she passed. My sister couldn’t wait until my dad’s school day ended, so she called him at work. She gleefully announced to him “I got a D-!”. We could hear him through the phone as he exclaimed “She got a D!” excitedly to his class. Still through the phone we heard his students clapping, laughing and whooping in congratulations. Seldom has a grade in our household been so celebrated.
Just thought a shitty picture like this should be accompanied by a story about a person’s parents who actually gave a shit about helping their kid instead of mocking and punishing them.

I’m really not understanding why you think cultural appropriation would be ok, unless you are assuming that the girl in the picture is part Japanese.

Cultural appropriation isn’t a thing, hon. ☺️ Cultures should be shared by all means.

I disagree. The makeup is clearly reflective of traditional Geisha makeup which is yellowface and therefore racist. Furthermore, the girl is wearing a kimono, a garment that has for ages carried cultural significance. Assuming that she is white how can you think this is ok? And cultural appropriation isn’t a thing? What rock do you live under? I suggest you educate yourself on the differences between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation.

I am japanese, in japan at this very moment. The only people who think culture shouldnt be shared are racists like you. 
A vast majority of Japanese people actually enjoy other people making an effort to spread and enjoy japanese culture, and encourage it. Many make businesses in deliberately taking pictures of people in kimono. A common omiage (gift) for foreigners from japanese people is traditional japanese things such as kimonos, tea seats, shisa dog statues, ect. 
And to top it off, basically 80 percent of japanese customs, traditions, and food, came from other countries. Japanese is an integration of different cultures, like america. Japan takes influences from places like korea, china, russia, and europe. If japan stuck to itself, there would be no tempura, japanese tea, tea ceremonies, kabuki, japanese bread, japanese curry, j- pop, anime, cars, or modern fishing techniques. The picture is not “yellow face” they are not making fun of asians. In fact, it looks like they put extra care and research into their work. 
The only reason that you have a problem with this is because that little girl is white and you know that it is acceptable on tumblr to crap all over white people. The only racist here is you.

I live in Japan and I’d like to back up this sentiment. 
Recently a museum in Boston came under a lot of fire for allowing visitors to wear a ‘kimono’ (it was featuring a painting my Monet of a girl – a white girl – in a kimono, and the museum had replicas made that guests of ANY RACE could wear to mimic the painting, Pageant-of-the-Masters style). After protests and heated debate, the museum closed the event.
I was living in Japan at the time, and out of all the *actual* Japanese people I asked, not a single one was offended by the event. Rather, they were excited that people half a world away were showing interest in their culture, and were sad that visitors could no longer enjoy the event.
This party, though somewhat silly in application, is an attempt at experiencing and appreciating another culture. The mom who put this together is not an expert on Japan, but she did her best. She got a lot of things right: there are few things Japan loves more than tea, Pocky, and sakura. 
Where do you draw the line for who is “allowed” to learn about Japan? If the girl were of Japanese descent, would that make it ok (even though her citizenship would be the same as the girl from the photo)? If one of the girl’s parents were from Japan, then would it be ok? 
Are you only allowed to make pizza if you live in Italy? If you’re an Italian immigrant? How do we decide these things??
You can’t say you want to dismantle racism and then in the next breath make rules – based on race – for who people can wear, try, or eat, especially when the intent is obviously to have fun experiencing a culture (as opposed to having fun by making fun of a race or culture, like blackface does). 
When you tell people they can only experience things ‘meant for their race’, it totally smacks of segregation to me and I can’t stand it. As someone who (obviously) loves Japan, I say let people learn about it, let people experience it, let people appreciate it. You don’t have to know every single thing about a culture to enjoy it.

Thank you! People with some sense! Don’t just see white people and go, “Hmm, I wonder what I can shame them on here?” Culture is meant to be shared and appreciated, and you’ll find that people actually love it when you try to learn about things like this.

There is a difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation.  For a good explanation, I’ll drop this video.  But the point about cultural appropriation in a nutshell is when a dominant group takes something that belongs to another culture and makes it their own without regard for the culture.  And the problem is that in a lot of cases, the culture it comes from receives backlash for doing the exact same thing as the dominant group, when the latter was praised for it.  In the case of the little girl in the kimono though, I know roughly what the backstory was.  Thorough research was done so that the kid could learn about the culture.  ^.^  It isn’t bad to jump up in defense of minority groups.  But do your research and thoroughly know what you’re defending first otherwise you might end up looking like an asshat.

also apparently this marks the first time a star trek uniform’s actually been worn in space i heard??? which is also awesome



She did it again today! Also, in the picture she’s drinking coffee brewed with an espresso machine specifically engineered to work on the International Space Station - the ISSpresso (made in Italy!).



The most amusing thing about this is that, at current launch prices, it costs in the neighbourhood of $4000 per pound to send stuff to the International Space Station. Eyeballing that uniform’s weight at about two pounds, this means that before Ms. Cristoforetti could take cosplay selfies on the ISS, she first had to propose to her nation’s space agency, with a straight face, that they should approve an extra eight grand to send that uniform up there with her in the first place - and that they agreed that this was, in fact, an appropriate use of their funding.

Later that afternoon, she wrote on her blog: “I feel like I just met my father for the first time today.”“I struggled to reconcile my feelings toward my father’s absence in my life, while continuing to care deeply for him and other homeless individuals.”“Over time, I learned to navigate through my feelings of desperation and became more vocal in my community about my father’s condition and what it’s like to watch a loved one battle mental illness.”He is now doing very well, and they are rebuilding their relationship from the ground up. “So long as we are alive in this world, every day is an opportunity to take hold of that ‘second chance.’ There is no failure unless you give up, and he never gave up.  in rags who looked somewhat familiar.
 It was her father. By fate or by chance,
 she'd found him after 25 years.

He had schizophrenia. He didn’t recognize her. She did everything she could to connect with him, but he refused treatment, medication, food, or new clothing.

Eventually, he said to her: “Diana, I am so sorry for not being in your life. I am so happy that you have a family of your own now. Do better for them…… Don’t worry about me or what everyone says about me. If you want to make me proud and happy, be there for your family the way your mom and I never were. Stop trying to save everyone…just worry about yourself and your family. And don’t forget why I named you Diana, you are the light within the darkness.” So she refused to give up.After suffering a heart attack, he agreed to get help and slowly took control of his own life.One day he suddenly called her to invite her out for coffee.         Be Like, Cheating, and Dumb: justaheartbrokenfangirl
 I had this girl in my class and she was considered to be like really dumb. She'd
 ask a ton of doubts and questions in class, which everybody would consider t
 be "stupid"and "silly and even the teachers would often taunt her but she'd
 never stop asking. But the thing was that she'd almost always top the class
 examinations and everyone was like???? They all thought she was cheating
 and stuff and obviously even the teachers were very biased because she
 wasn't so smart in class, and she was regularly accused of cheating. But
 nobody could prove that she was actually cheating but the whole class and
 teachers totally believed that she did. I'm pretty socially awkward so I never
 really talked to her, but she was leaving school this year and I was genuinely
 curious about how she was so good during exams and how she didn't let
 everyone's remarks affect her She always used to sit and hang out with only
 one girl, and she told me that that friend of hers was severely socially anxious
 and she'd lag in studies because she couldn't bring herself to ask doubts in
 class or ask for help from others. So they had this system where during
 lectures her friend would write down any question she had, and she would ask
 them for her. And I was just so touched??? Idk but it really changed the way I
 looked at people?? This girl endured taunts and jeers and borderline bullying
 for being "stupid" when she was actually really smart and couid easily have
 refused to ask such doubts for her friend but she did?? And brushed off
 everything others would throw at her for her friend?? I was just, idk it just really
 changed me in some way.
