greater-than-the-sword: recoveringvictorian: mccarthyites: mindblowingfactz: A boy born with just two percent of his brain has defied doctors’ predictions after his brain grew back to 80 percent of the average size. Doctors had told the parents to terminate pregnancy not once but five times. I saw this before some time ago and it just absolutely fascinated me because there was never any other information provided and the little info that was given was tantalizingly vague. Even with 80% of his brain growing surely he had all kinds of severe issues, right? And even if his brain did grow back he might not have lived very long. So I did a little research on him. Everything happened exactly like it says in the pic- the parents were strongly urged to abort the baby five separate times, and they refused all five times, and he was born with two percent of his brain and he does now have 80% of it. What the blurb doesn’t say is that the little boy’s name is Noah Wall and he’s now a very happy, healthy, six year old boy. Doctors said he would be SEVERELY mentally disabled, unable to see, hear, talk, or even eat. The doctors were wrong. He can do all of these things and more. By age two he was sitting up straight and singing; he can play with legos and computer games, he’s learned how to count, he can hold perfectly normal conversations, and he loves painting. He just recently wrote his name for the first time, and he’s trying very hard to learn how to walk (but that’s still a long way off because he’s mostly paralyzed from the waist down). Most of this probably just seems like boring normalcy, but considering he was born with only 2% of his brain he shouldn’t be able to do ANY of this. The fact that he lived beyond his first birthday is a miracle in and of itself. Noah hasn’t had a brain scan since he was three years old, so no one knows if his brain has grown more since then, but all indications are that he’s developing physically at a normal rate, and he’s developing well enough mentally that his parents recently enrolled him in a local elementary school- not any special education classes, a normal, mainstream school. It’s hard work for the parents, there’s tons of medical appointments, regular surgeries with lengthy recovery times, they had to shuttle Noah to a neurophysics center in Australia to help him learn how to sit upright. But they both agree he’s worth it. This is what his mom Shelly has to say: “I thank him every night before he goes to bed. I say ‘Noah, thank you for such a lovely day. I’ve loved my day.’ And he’ll say ‘I love you, Mummy. Night night.’” https://nypost.com/2019/02/20/boy-born-without-brain-defies-odds-to-live/ https://www.theepochtimes.com/boy-born-with-2-percent-of-brain-defies-odds-learns-to-count-and-surf_2810231.html https://www.cbc.ca/passionateeye/features/the-boy-born-without-a-brain-is-now-a-practical-joker-who-loves-playing-mar I saw a video on him and his parents awhile back and it’s such a happy story. ^^ Just another invalid deformed beyond hope and destined to be a vegetable who should have been killed in the womb, amirite? I am utterly revolted, Shame on you tumblr, and if this video was shot in good spirit and you turned it into this, double shame on you.

Holy actual ableism batman

Update: This has been confirmed by Mrs. Alaimo, director of Special Education, of Floral Park Memorial High School to be her students, and they are aware of the situation and have contacted vine to have it removed, which was ignored, and pretty much a moot point because once it’s on the internet, it stays on the internet. At this point, it’s best to just spread awareness, but these are developmentally disabled children (aged 7th-12th grade.)

Holy shit.

Idk if what I have to say matters, but I’m a recent graduate of FPM (Class of 2014, actually), and I am absolutely sick over this. In my years at FPM, we were all encouraged to interact positively with developmentally disabled students as much as we could, and no matter how much of a jackass certain people wanted to be, I’ve never seen anyone treat any of those students with such little respect. From what I’ve seen, the program has a strong “it takes a village” mentality and tries very hard to prepare disabled students for life after FPM. What was a well-deserved moment of fun for students that I actually recognize from last year was turned into a joke about their capabilities and, regardless of my love for FPM, I can’t sit idly and say nothing. I know that I ain’t shit and I certainly am not a representative for the school, but on behalf of the graduated student body, I want to sincerely apologize for this idiot’s actions and for the strain put on the Special Education department at this time. My class always joked about how FPM would be nothing without us once we left, but we really didn’t think we would see something like this happening. Please don’t let this cloud of ableist bullshit hang over the entire school, because i know Mrs. Alaimo puts in a lot of work to lead workshops and inform students so that they don’t think the same way as the girl who took this vine clearly does.

So no ones gonna ask why they were listening to that. Please explain to me why they had these disabled folks listening to this type of music. And y’all right that’s fucked up but usually disabled or not white people don’t do African American dances properly that’s why people thought it was a reg deg vid.

it’s fucking music?? it’s just music, girl, maybe they just happened to fucking like it. Music has no “race”, and it belongs to nobody. and making fun of people for dancing - no matter how they dance - is fucked the fuck up anyway, disabled or not.

This just in, we need to limit the music disabled people listen to! BECAUSE THEY MAY DANCE INCORRECTLY TO IT, AND THAT’S TERRIBLE.

Like, what the fuck? Is that supposed to be the ‘grounding’ comment on this post?

“Okay, hold on guys, it’s terrible that it turns out these are disabled kids, but they can’t dance correctly to this music like a lot of white people. Easy to make that mistake, right? Let’s just not let disabled people listen to it. We only want to make fun of fully abled white people, so we need to make sure they are the only ones fucking up the correct way to dance!”

Story time: my Dad is a big Scottish music figure in Australia.

When he can, he and his band perform at a festival called Awakenings, held specifically for mentally disabled people of all ages. It’s the highlight for many of the attendees year. There’s arts, crafts, music and all sorts of great workshops designed to give developmentally disabled children and adults fun and a way to express themselves.

Music is the one that works best. By leaps and bounds, it works best.

The looks on their faces when they get to see a live band, just for them, is amazing. It gets them moving, it gets them talking, it gets them singing! Music can be the only outlet for some of the attendees.

But none of them know how to dance either Irish or Scottish dances, so I suppose I should tell my Dad to pack it the fuck in because they can’t dance a proper fucking dance? They can’t dance to this cultural music properly, so no more entertainment for them? Fuck that.

What line of reasoning is being used here to make this the priority in this situation? For fuck sake, before even being disabled, they are fucking children. They can dance however they fucking want on that alone, thank you very much.

But, listen, I’ll compromise. Next time I see someone without either Irish or Scottish heritage try and join in a Cèilidh, I’ll call Michael Flatley and tell him to shove his foot so far up their arse it rends them in two, alright?

@yungclo you really need to make fun of a race of people that badly that you want to make sure disabled people don’t listen to music they like so you don’t accidentally make fun of them? That’s what it fucking feels like you’re trying to say.

Fucked up

This whole situation is fucked

:
womenagainstwomyn:

liberallogic101:

omgsoableist:

topographicocean:

tenitchyfingers:

yungclo:

theladykillah:

fuckthefearturkey:

rapidashtodatass:

omgsoableist:

rapidashtodatass:

vinesnow:

white people dancing - more vines

You all bitch and bitch about ableism, but there are over 14,000 notes on this mocking a group of developmentally disabled adults at a day program sponsored dance that they are having the time of their life at because “hurr durr, cheap shot at white people.”

This is a violation of HIPAA because I know for a fact the owner of this vine did not acquire release signatures from each participant, nor their state appointed guardian, if applicable.

I do think that Confirmation Bias and news media using misleading numbers are 2 of the biggest problems that people face today. I mean that. Example; If you are reading this, the likelihood of you being shot by another person for basically any reason over your entire life is virtually nil. If you are a soldier or in a gang maybe it increases bit. The thing is, those folks having a higher rate has no real effect on the likelihood of a housewife in Kansas potentially getting shot yet they do effect those averages.

Funny enough, last night I was talking with 2 friends about a study I had to do in college on the rate of Lupus in women with breast implants in the late 80s. There were 2 cases (in the entire US) with reasonable evidence to assume that ruptured breast implants could have been one of multiple factors which resulted in those 2 women to having immune system issues. The thing to notice there are “could have been one of multiple factors” by the way. Also, that these were ruptured silicon implants which were (I think) 10+ year old implants. Anyways, the reason I had to study the case was because within months of this ‘speculation” there was a massive spike in women who had breast implants in hospitals with Lupus-like symptoms. The reason? Oprah did a TV special on the dangers of breast implants. Not ruptured 10 year old implants under specific circumstances mind you. Just implants. She showcased one of these women.

To date, there has never been conclusive evidence to support that breast implants have ever been a major contributing factor as a cause of Lupus. A woman could develop Lupus (much more common in women) and have implants. And implants can at times cause complications and especially in the past, have been dangerous. But, those things were glossed over in favor of creating a public issue. Within months, Oprah had caused a mini epidemic of psychosomatic Lupus in women with implants. It went from 2 cases to over 10,000 mind you, in months.

: The real cause of increasing autism prevalence? 25000- 300000 A Autism 20000 ■ Organic Food Sales 2 200000 8 15000 C E 10000 5000- 100000 a r0.9971 (p 0.0001) Year Sources: Organic Trade Association, 2011 Organic Industry Survey, U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Program Data Analysis system DANS), OMB# 1 820-0043 Children with Disabilities Receiving Special Education Under Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
ronworkman:

5 Ways Statistics Are Used to Lie to You Every Day

As a person that deals with numbers on a daily basis, I can’t pick one of these 5 that hasn’t shaved years off of my life watching people commit.
