From what I’ve read on this so far, it seems kinda like how Americans can travel to Cuba now: you can go but you have to be with a tour group. he allegedly stole a political propaganda sign from a hotel so he deserves 15 years of “hard labor”? (whatever that means) sad, cruel and cynical world we live in Look. When you go to other countries you ARE EXPECTED to follow their laws or pay the price. I went to Bali a couple years back and drug use is punishable by DEATH, okay??? You’d be stupid to think you can enter someone else’s land and not have to follow their customs. Even the damn passport says you’re responsible for following the other country’s laws. Anyway. He’s lucky they didn’t sentence his ass to death. -Holly even if it’s true that he stole the sign, however entitled he may have felt to do so, the punishment does not fit the crime. Not in the slightest. This is still an example of oppression. Not race-based oppression, but oppression all the same, and it needs to be spoken out against. It’s not “alleged”, he stole the sign, he admitted to making that mistake in the press conference. Anyway. The punishment may not fit but once you step out your country that shit don’t matter, ESP in North Korea?! DUH there’s gonna be oppression in this discussion. But that’s not what he’s going through, he’s going through the dangers of white privilege, in that he didn’t even realize how wrong that was to do. Like. Blood. Of all places to not act right??? 🙄. Nobody is concerned what his sentence says about the lives of the North Korean people who have to live through these laws everyday. That’s what oppression is. This guy had a choice of if he wanted to act sensibly and get back to his country, and back to a life where a sentence like this is less likely to happen to a privileged white male. The people of North Korea don’t get that. But no. I don’t understand why he thought this was a good idea. The conversation sounds very focused on a tone of ‘why is this happening to our precious American boy? He is special. He doesn’t deserve it’ rather than ‘the laws in N Korea sounds pretty fucked up if this is an example of one of them.
