America, Community, and Cute: Mira Jacob @mirajacob Two things I didn't know until I was yesterday years old: 1) Memorial Day was started by African Americans honoring fallen Union solders 2) The Statue of Liberty was gifted to America to celebrate freed slaves, not immigrants. Erasure is real, you all. But that part we knew. 7:28 AM May 27, 2019 Twitter for iPhone 37.2K Likes 12.2K Retweets valquainton: ms-demeanor: ms-demeanor: the-barista-who-became-a-rabbit: meganphntmgrl: panic-boy-21: blckrapunzel: laughingacademy: interficio-vos: thatpettyblackgirl: The White Wash is real. One of the Earliest Memorial Day Ceremonies Was Held by Freed Slaves The Statue of Liberty was created to celebrate freed slaves, not immigrants, its new museum recounts Just wait until you google what the original Statue of Liberty(that got refused by America)looked like For those of you who don’t want to look it up yourselves: Lady Liberty is a black woman. Guys, this has been thoroughly debunked since 2000, and it does the statue on the left there a huge disservice to treat her as an unwanted copy. That’s Lady Liberty of St. Maarten, an homage from 2007 (post-dating the debunking, even) that was dedicated to the anniversary of the ending of slavery there: The Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor is a representation of Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, with bonus American iconography: HOWEVER: Lady Liberty in New York is not based on a white woman, either.  She’s a Muslim Arab woman, at least in terms of the modeling of her face. Her face was reused from an abandoned project to build a colossal statue of a modern Egyptian Arab peasant woman near the Suez Canal (as verified by the Smithsonian, no less). While she wasn’t originally dedicated specifically for immigrants, the poem “The New Colossus” was added specifically because of the position she occupied in the harbor and the symbolic visual power she would have to immigrants coming in. The author, Emma Lazarus, was Jewish. It’s important to fight back on the whitewashing of history, because it happens left and right, but it shouldn’t happen at the cost of misinformation that treats Lady Liberty of St. Maarten as an unwanted prototype rather than a powerful monument in her own right and, ironically, claims that she’s now a white woman when she’s not while also ignoring the powerful influence of the Jewish-American community on the final version. Geez, I’m really tired of people trying to spout false shit all over tumblr. Like, this post has 37K notes, But I assure you, that like many other false posts, ¾ of the notes are from people who saw the false bit and prefered to reblog it that way and be mad, instead of just making a simple google search Hi Darling Friends of Tumblr. I’ve been taking too long to do data entry and I’m not good at actually doing analysis so it’s time to start naming and shaming. @thatpettyblackgirl is a blog that I’ve been observing for a while that has a really interesting pattern of behavior. Namely, posting a bunch of shit like this. Remember that tweet about Olive Garden supporting Donald Trump that was debunked? Well when it circulated on tumblr two weeks ago it was because of @thatpettyblackgirl You know the misreported post about the school lunch program that refused donations from a local businessman? That was a different blogger but thatpettyblackgirl has circulated another version of it. That other blogger has a posting history that’s full of the same kinds of things thatpettyblackgirl posts - lots of reposts from twitter, lots of screenshots from other sites, not a lot of commentary, and things that are decontextualized enough to make them seem worse than they are or to totally misrepresent the actions depicted (like this reposted video and tweets indignant about a man being arrested when the very specific purpose of his protest was to get arrested). It reminds me of that post about coconut husks as a wood alternative that’s been circulating recently - a screenshot of a white man above a news article is posted with the complaint that white people “discovering” coconuts after disregarding them as useless when the article is about a new method of processing coconut husks that allows them to be put to new uses. That blog is fascinating. And has a lot in common with thatpettyblackgirl - both of them reblog their own posts at a rate that’s higher than I’ve seen on most tumblrs (btw, you should know that a while back I asked for volunteers who would let me explore their tumblrs and while my research sample isn’t random it is a collection of small and large blogs and none of them have *checks notes* reblogged their own post of a bunch of screencaps of a tweet storm five times in the last couple of days). Both of them tend to post screencaps, neither one really writes much. They reblog a lot of memes, and both have some pretty big textposts that are just straight rip-offs of tweets (”bi folks have you eaten today? answer quick and iced coffee doesn’t count” is one of thatpettyblackgirl’s recent popular textposts and it’s ripped off from twitter.) They also reblog eachother a fair amount - along with @whyyoustabbedme and @endangered-justice-seeker, who ALSO have really weird posting patterns. Also all four of those blogs are part of a group of nine blogs that were created in a three-week period of 2017 that I’ve been watching that don’t seem to follow a pattern of normal tumblr behavior and that also post an awful lot of incorrect viral posts and are staggeringly popular (for clarity: blackqueerblog is not one of the nine created in that time period). ANYWAY this is all reminding me very strongly of bellygangstaboo and lagonegirl. I know I probably sound like this image: But there are excellent, thoughtful bloggers who discuss police brutality, racism in the US, class warefare, and institutional bias who aren’t ALSO unflaggingly committed to having their own dedicated Snopes pages. @odinsblog, Franchesca Ramsey, @antifainternational, and @mostlysignssomeportents might be a good place to start. My dudes, I don’t want to be depressing so I’ll let Vanity Fair do it for me: That Russian operatives could so effectively engage Americans with tactics as simple as Facebook ads, fake-news postings, and Twitter trolls, shows how dangerous misinformation is in the social-media age, when propaganda can be so easily amplified. More important, it highlights how primed Americans already were for manipulation. When the ICE raids started up again a few months ago thatpettyblackgirl was posting about how shameful it was that there was nothing that could be done. A lot of these blogs are writing about how it’s impossible for black people to succeed in America, they’re writing about how voting is always rigged and you can’t fight the system. And you know what that goes against every fucking principle of my cold little anarchist heart. These blogs are full of despair - they look like they’re full of cute memes and fresh news but they’re a poisoned pill telling you not to bother because you can’t fight the system. They’re not offering help, they’re training you not to bother fighting for your rights (there was a popular post about how the Hong Kong protesters are light years ahead of US protesters - that post didn’t talk about mutual aid or sharing tactics, it just said “people in the US would never” and left it at that, like we can’t learn from each other and share information across borders) Fucking. Anyway. I’ve been fairly quiet about this because I’ve been trying to be all good and data sciencey about it but I’ve seen this post on my dash fifty times this week. Keep your eye out for @thatpettyblackgirl  @uncommonbish @whyyoustabbedme and @blackqueerblog - all of them have large followings and are known to post tweets and news articles out of context and if you’re considering reblogging information from one of their blogs please make a point to fact-check the post yourself. Not everything they post is wrong. I don’t know if these are real bloggers who don’t care about the potential negative impact of their tweet thievery or if they’re weird psyops blogs that are intended to make you feel hopeless about your place in the political process. Whatever they are it doesn’t matter when they continually post misinformation and don’t seem to care about stopping so please be cautious. Anyway, I’m cataloguing these sorts of posts at @psyops-redux so if you want to keep an eye out for stuff that’s debunked I’ll tag by originating blogger over there. Stay safe, buds. Dammit, I got all fired up and I forgot to add: THERE’S A GAME THAT HELPS YOU RECOGNIZE WHEN PEOPLE ARE POSTING MISINFORMATION AND MAKES YOU LESS SUSCEPTIBLE TO THIS KIND OF PROPAGANDA AND YOU SHOULD ALL GO PLAY IT. Ah. The number reposts from their own blogs had puzzled me in the past. I assumed it was something to do with the way Tumblr runs that I wasn’t tech-savvy enough to understand. But this makes a lot of sense. Unless someone tells me otherwise, I’m gonna go ahead and unfollow the blogs listed. Any recommendations for actual historical/current affairs poc blogs to follow instead?

Arguing, Ass, and Children: Camille Echols added 2 new photos. 22 June at 07:45. I've been relatively quiet on social media about the "Anti-vax" movement. I've seen smart-ass memes saying "why would my unvaccinated kids be a threat to your vaccinated kids if you're so sure they work?" THIS is why. There are people who cannot have live vaccines, like my daughter, who had a kidney transplant when she was 2 years old. She got one varicella vaccine but couldn't get the second because she was immunosuppressed and instead of developing immunity, she would have contracted the virus. She was exposed to a child with chickenpox this weekend and now we are in the ER. She's getting labwork, injections of immunoglobulin and then we have to wait to see what the infectious disease doctor says. The incubation period of chicken pox is 7-21 days. So even with all we are doing, she could still become sick in the next 3 weeks. And that would mean an automatic admission to the hospital for IV antiviral meds. She could become very, very sick from this. Please, if you are someone who believes your child will get autism from vaccines, PLEASE educate yourself. There isn't a single peer reviewed study that came to that conclusion. And the people choosing to skip vaccinations put children like my daughter at risk. She has been through SO much already. And this was avoidable. so Let me address the recurring questions: 01 contacted her transplant nephrologist regarding her exposure, who in turn consulted with the infectious disease team at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and their solid organ transplant PharmD. It was the team's recommendation that I take Ashley to the ER to receive VZIG, which costs approx $5k and cannot be given outpatient. Titers were drawn prior to giving her VZIG. I never claimed that the child with chicken pox was not vaccinated. That is irrelevant. The resurgence of chicken pox, whooping cough, measles and other diseases that were nearly eradicated years ago is a direct result of a large percentage of the population deciding not to vaccinate their children without sound research the support that decision. As for those telling me to "educate myself," I am a pediatric RN with over 10 years' experience in transplant and chronic illness populations. I have had extensive education regarding vaccinations. I would not post about something I was ignorant about. .Those saying "it's just chicken pox, she won't die," please educate yourselves on transplant recipients. There are millions of people waiting for life saving organs. With those numbers, the odds are good that someone in your life has been affected by organ failure. <p><a href="https://black-girl-against-feminism.tumblr.com/post/169858354764/keyhollow-hannie-mylove-keyhollow" class="tumblr_blog">black-girl-against-feminism</a>:</p> <blockquote><p><a href="http://keyhollow.tumblr.com/post/163004744915/hannie-mylove-keyhollow-hannie-mylove" class="tumblr_blog">keyhollow</a>:</p> <blockquote><p><a href="http://hannie-mylove.tumblr.com/post/163002583620/keyhollow-hannie-mylove-keyhollow" class="tumblr_blog">hannie-mylove</a>:</p> <blockquote><p><a href="http://keyhollow.tumblr.com/post/162999957525/hannie-mylove-keyhollow-hannie-mylove" class="tumblr_blog">keyhollow</a>:</p> <blockquote><p><a href="http://hannie-mylove.tumblr.com/post/162998925645/keyhollow-hannie-mylove-keyhollow" class="tumblr_blog">hannie-mylove</a>:</p> <blockquote><p><a href="http://keyhollow.tumblr.com/post/162992998800/hannie-mylove-keyhollow" class="tumblr_blog">keyhollow</a>:</p> <blockquote><p><a href="http://hannie-mylove.tumblr.com/post/162991317210/keyhollow-illogical-bullshit" class="tumblr_blog">hannie-mylove</a>:</p> <blockquote><p><a href="http://keyhollow.tumblr.com/post/162989996495/illogical-bullshit-anti-sjw-movement" class="tumblr_blog">keyhollow</a>:</p> <blockquote><p><a href="http://illogical-bullshit.tumblr.com/post/162896691742/anti-sjw-movement-violent-darts-techno-gal" class="tumblr_blog">illogical-bullshit</a>:</p> <blockquote> <p><a href="https://anti-sjw-movement.tumblr.com/post/162887992421/violent-darts-techno-gal-memehumor-mom" class="tumblr_blog">anti-sjw-movement</a>:</p> <blockquote> <p><a href="https://violent-darts.tumblr.com/post/162637546645/techno-gal-memehumor-mom-gets-real-in" class="tumblr_blog">violent-darts</a>:</p> <blockquote> <p><a href="http://techno-gal.tumblr.com/post/162609433406/memehumor-mom-gets-real-in-facebook-post-about" class="tumblr_blog">techno-gal</a>:</p> <blockquote> <p><a href="http://memehumor.net/post/162520438508/mom-gets-real-in-facebook-post-about-why-the" class="tumblr_blog">memehumor</a>:</p> <blockquote><p>Mom gets real in Facebook post about why the anti-vaxxer movement is so dangerous for her daughter.</p></blockquote> <p>Also, if you’d rather make dead kids than have the possibility of your own kid become autistic you are garbage</p> </blockquote> <p>Vaccinate. Your. Fucking. Children. </p> </blockquote> <p>Honestly, just vaccinate your children, for themselves and others around them like above.</p> </blockquote> <p>Herd immunity is a huge part of how we came so far as a society. Don’t be a fucking medieval asshat. Vaccinate. Your. Kids.</p> </blockquote> <p>Vaccinate your kids you stupid stupid people</p></blockquote> <p>No.</p></blockquote> <p>Then keep them away from the rest of us. I also hope you never have children, because that should be considered abuse.</p></blockquote> <p>I have children. They aren’t vaccinated. I wasn’t vaccinated. Nor were my brothers and sisters or cousins. Vaccines do not prevent diseases. Modern sanitation and plumbing. Every country that still has these diseases are the ones that are underdeveloped. They bring them vaccines and it only makes them sicker since their immune systems are already weak. I also know several moms who are nurses who don’t vaccinate.</p></blockquote> <p>Congratulations, you and yours may be the patient zero that will bring ruin and death upon a whole city, or more. </p><p>Modern sanitation and plumbing help. If you notice, polio didn’t stop being a problem until vaccines. </p><p>You have no proof for that.</p><p>I know several parents that swear by beating their children and using garlic instead of medications.</p><p>You’re increasing your and your kids risk of death, as well as the kids around you, by a lot. You are being protected by the very herd immunity you argue against.</p></blockquote> <p>Look up herd immunity origins. That’s not what it is. Did you know the polio vaccine is know the leading cause of polio related paralysis? Look it up. NPR article. Honestly there is so much to discuss I can’t even get into it. Just don’t believe what you’ve been told. The research and proof is out there. Look up the vaccine inserts themselves. If vaccines actually worked (which actually have very low success rates) and were totally safe- then I would be fine with it. But as it stands, there are way too many risks and not even discussion or concern for their safety. The vaccine makers don’t care if they are safe because they cannot be sued.</p></blockquote> <p>I know herd immunity origins. I’m a biologist. The basic meaning is when a majority of a group is immune to a disease, thus a disease is not able to spread efficiently. Vaccines work with your natural immune system. They create the antibodies just like your body would if exposed to the contagion. Vaccines aren’t magic, they’re a very dead very small amount of contagion. They are safe, tested with blood collected from horseshoe crabs, as their blood has special clotting properties used as its immune system in order to identify any other contagions, especially living ones, that could cause problems. </p><p>“On rare occasions, if a population is seriously under-immunized, an excreted vaccine-virus can continue to circulate for an extended period of time. The longer it is allowed to survive, the more genetic changes it undergoes. In very rare instances, the vaccine-virus can genetically change into a form that can paralyse – this is what is known as a circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV).</p><p>It takes a long time for a cVDPV to occur. Generally, the strain will have been allowed to circulate in an un- or under-immunized population for a period of at least 12 months. Circulating VDPVs occur when routine or supplementary immunization activities (SIAs) are poorly conducted and a population is left susceptible to poliovirus, whether from vaccine-derived or wild poliovirus. Hence, the problem is not with the vaccine itself, but low vaccination coverage. If a population is fully immunized, they will be protected against both vaccine-derived and wild polioviruses.</p><p>Since 2000, more than 10 billion doses of OPV have been administered to nearly 3 billion children worldwide. As a result, more than 13 million cases of polio have been prevented, and the disease has been reduced by more than 99%. During that time, 24 cVDPV outbreaks occurred in 21 countries, resulting in fewer than 760 VDPV cases.”</p><p>TLDR: People like you cause that polio shit</p><p>Vaccines are very successful. Find me a peer reviewed legitimate scientific study that states otherwise. </p><p>The vaccine makers can be sued and care very much, hence they reason incredible amounts of horseshoe crab blood is harvested every year to test batches. Vaccines are here to help you. It’s not a boogie man.</p></blockquote> <p>If you do not vaccinate your children, keep them away from the public. Just because you want your child to to die an early death, it doesn’t mean that we want the same.</p></blockquote>

Great chemist, but knows fuck all about nutrition and medicine. And part of me gets the idea that people don’t get that Bill is a damn fine engineer, but his science credentials, are of the pop variety, which can be good to get kids into the sciences, but the way people treat him as an authority on anything aside from mechanical engineering leaves a pretty bad taste in my mouth, especially given that I know exactly how he got his start, and I’ve seen more accomplished people do a better job.</p> </blockquote> <p>and then people ask how we get there and we say, well we’d have to start with stem cell research and then we’d have cloning tech and organ donoation wouldn’t even be a thing and then (and then people get VERYVERY SCARED) next thing you know there’s a human born human front and everyone is rewatching gattaca and blade runner and getting VERY SCARED again. I mean damn, if people find out what we’re doing with parathanogenisis research in the mean while, y’all would flip a lid. <br/><br/>also, “vitamin megadose therapy”: actually very effective for some nutritional defecencies and related diseases(scurvy is an old one: large doses of vitamin C which yes is water soluble and is thus pissed out, treats scurvy faster than the exact capacity dose, rickets and some others), but yes negligble effect on healthy people. and it promoted people looking at world hunger as a problem to be solved to look at total nutrition(something not thought of in the 1960′s), not just kcal quantity. and for healthy people, megadosing does nothing that a placebo doesn’t do unless it’s once of the few fat soluble ones, and thus is altogether harmless as a ritual.<br/><br/>and of course, it serves as an mental innoculation against leaving things like bright’s disease(s) declared ‘untreatable’.<br/><br/>sometimes you have to come at a problem or set of problems squirrelly and sideways.</p> </blockquote> <p>I’m referring to megadoses being a panacea, which Linus kinda started (and has been shown by other to be not the case) of somebody with a particular degree going out of their element and making a fool of themselves.</p> <p>What I’m going on here is that Nye wass great for getting kids into the sciences, but he’s not an authority. He’s an entertainer first and foremost. He’s not an authority on most of the stuff he purports either, and even then has problems in still being the guy from Almost Live who had science demonstrations that three Brits who actually work for Universities and have relevant degrees as well do an even better job of teaching while entertaining (helps that the three have some education credentials to back it up). Like I said his knowledge is of the pop and elementary variety, and very often (especially nowadays) strays into guy who doesn’t even try to research what he’s talking about in the slightest.</p> <p>As for squirelly thinking, that’s great when it produces repeatable and verifiable results, but often it tends toward pseudioscience, which gets debunked time and again. And when I say pop science, I’m talking things that have come around that stick because they’re popular, even if they’re actually wrong (for example elemental Iodine doesn’t boil ever, it just sublimates, which is something various home chemists have accidentally discovered isn’t true). That’s some of what’s going on with Nye, people are now taking him as an authority when he has none, and may in fact be wrong.</p> </blockquote> <p>Okay, lay it out. what is it that you’re scared that Nye maybe wrong about?</p> </blockquote> <p>LEts see fors starters on the more recent one his whole gender show. On the older one, it’s had some stuff that’s gone the way of the dodo (how he described atoms, even by 6th grade I knew it was long out of date), the whole myth of freezer batteries, his newer thing on nuclear power, hell have a video by somebody else.</p><figure class="tmblr-embed tmblr-full" data-provider="youtube" data-orig-width="540" data-orig-height="304" data-url="https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DjwZs226GTWI"><iframe width="540" height="304" id="youtube_iframe" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/jwZs226GTWI?feature=oembed&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https://safe.txmblr.com&amp;wmode=opaque" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></figure></blockquote> <p>Also can we please stop pretending that honorary degrees mean jack shit?</p>

This means that I’m specially trained, qualified and experienced in aiding the rehabilitation of people struggling with problem gambling, and working with people who are affected by others’ problem gambling protect themselves and rebuild their lives. I spend 30% of the hours of my day job working with these people.  I’m going to make a very bold statement: micro-transactions with a ‘chance’ element are gambling. They are what is called an ‘embedded gambling element’ in a game. They may be a ‘softer’ form of gambling than sitting at a poker machine, but they are gambling. They normalise gambling to children (which has been shown to lead to problem gambling). They groom future problem gamblers, and they exploit people who have neurochemical imbalances (ie, depression). There is a very, very strong link between gambling and mental illness.  People who gamble in games are more likely to susceptible to current and future gambling problems. I’m going to focus on lootboxes in Overwatch, because it’s the game I know the most about. I also know a lot about how poker machines are psychologically designed to be highly addictive, specifically exploiting known psychological triggers to reel people in and keep them spending.  Poker machines ‘tease’ you with near wins which provide you with the same adrenaline and dopamine release as an actual win.  Overwatch lootboxes do the same - you know that feel of seeing a purple/gold coin flipping in the air??? OMG! Is it going to be THAT THING YOU REALLY!!!!-oh.  Bright colours, exciting lights, the visceral feel of pushing the button/spinning the wheel is important to addiction. Blizzard has does the same with lootboxes - by vibrating your controller. By shaking the camera. By having the lootbox rATTLE AND EXPLODE!!!! with your reward. The sounds and specially engineered to build excitement and tensions and remind you of wealth. The ‘coin’ system of the lootbox reminds you of wealth. This is all super deliberate - it’s not a mistake. Using subconscious cues like exploding money boxes!!! the sound of money, the shape of money - that’s likening the process to a lottery.  While it’s quite unlikely someone could actually spend ENORMOUS amounts of money chasing that ‘jackpot’ (the skin they really want for their character, for example), it is possible. HOWEVER, it’s much more likely that the person will have this sort of reward system normalised, will find the element of chance ‘exciting’ (because, dude, we’re psychologically engineered to be more interested in ‘chance’ events than certain/impossible events), and seek out and enjoy other similar passtimes. Like actual gambling with real money.  Every time you gamble, you change the structure of your brain. I’m not exaggerating. Every time you take a chance on that lootbox, you flood your brain with adrenaline and dopamine. The presence of those two neurochemicals changes the density of the receptors of them minutely. After a few boxes, it’s unlikely you’ll become addicted. However, if you keep doing it, your receptors change density so that you need more adrenaline and more dopamine to get the same excitement and pleasure from the hit.  Worse, this rush of adrenaline and dopamine is much, much more addictive to people with mental illness (or a susceptibility to mental illness), as the presence of these chemicals is a very unhealthy (but unfortunately effective, at least in the extremely short term) way of medicating mental illness. Unfortunately, because of the escalating changes in receptor density, it eventually makes mental illness much worse in the long run. There is a strong link between gambling and suicide.  Compare your first lootbox with the lootboxes you get now. Are you getting the same enjoyment? Nope.  Think how many times you bought 11 lootboxes…. only to buy another 11 and another 11 and another 11. It becomes mechanical, pressing that button, opening another lootbox. Kind of like sitting at a poker machine.  Think about how normal the lootbox system seems now.  Chance-based gambling reward systems in games are dangerous, and should be replaced either by work-and-reward systems (you get 10 credits per level, and you can spend these on rewards of your choice), combined with micro-transaction-based currency for people who do not have the time to commit to leveling 300 times for that epic Christmas skin.  Remove chance. Just remove it.

In fact, if you have any number of other diseases, it is likely you have inflammation. And if you want to get or remain healthy, you definitely want to reduce the damaging effects of it! Inflammation has a positive and negative affect in your body. Inflammation has a positive side because it helps your body respond to stress. But chronic, low-grade inflammation is thought to be one of the leading causes of disease, premature aging, and illness. When you get a cold, your body responds with inflammation in the form of a fever that helps you heal. The inflammation does its job, gets rid of the virus, and disappears. But if your immunity is compromised and your body is constantly stressed, you might experience chronic low-grade inflammation that leaves you more susceptible to illness and disease. It's important to realize that chronic inflammation is the source of many if not most diseases, including cancer, obesity, and heart disease, which essentially makes it the leading cause of death in the US. While inflammation is a perfectly normal and beneficial process that occurs when your body's white blood cells and chemicals protect you from foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses, it leads to trouble when the inflammatory response gets out of hand. Your diet has a lot to do with this chain of events. You can help your body fight inflammation by reducing stress, adjusting your diet, and by getting enough sunshine. Diet is a key part of your inflammation-fighting plan, and some foods have amazing anti-inflammatory properties. Apple, Brains, and Drugs: ARE YOU ADDICTED? IG: 6CONSCIOUSVIBRANCY The fact is... junk foods stimulate the reward system in the brain in the same way as drugs of abuse like cocaine. For susceptible people, eating junk foods can lead to full-blown addiction, which shares the same biological basis as addiction to drugs of abuse. There is a system in our brain called the reward system. This system was designed to “reward” us when we do things that encourage our survival. This includes primal behaviors like eating. The brain knows that when we eat, we’re doing something “right,” and releases a bunch of feel-good chemicals in the reward system, such as the neurotransmitter dopamine – interpreted by our brains as pleasure. The brain is hardwired to seek out behaviors that release dopamine in the reward system. The problem with modern junk foods is that they can cause a reward that is way more powerful than anything we were ever exposed to in nature. Whereas eating an apple might cause a moderate release of dopamine, eating a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is so incredibly rewarding that it releases a massive amount. When people repeatedly do something that releases dopamine in the reward system (such as smoking a cigarette or eating a Snickers bar), the dopamine receptors can start to down-regulate. When the brain sees that the amount of dopamine is too high, it starts removing the dopamine receptors in order to keep things “balanced.” When you have fewer receptors, you need more dopamine to reach the same effect, which causes people to start eating more junk food to reach the same level of reward as before. This is called tolerance. If you have fewer dopamine receptors, then you will have very little dopamine activity and you will start to feel unhappy if you don’t get your junk food “fix.” This is called withdrawal. Tolerance and withdrawal are the hallmarks of physical addiction. Multiple studies in rats show that they can become physically addicted to junk food in the same way as they become addicted to drugs of abuse. Of course, all of this is a drastic oversimplification, but this is basically how food addiction (and any addiction) works. Consciousvibrancy

America, Food, and Memes: NOVET Should go without. food housing health care Work respect EVER VETERANS ST COM The Department of Veterans Affairs health care system was again declared a “high risk” area of government, susceptible to waste and mismanagement and in need of more oversight. The Government Accountability Office, a leading government watchdog, presented to Congress on Wednesday its biennial report of government programs that are vulnerable to fraud, waste, abuse and mismanagement. VA health care was listed as one of 34 high-risk areas in the nearly 700-page report. The department didn’t improve enough to be removed this year, the report states. The GAO cited a “lack of progress” and noted ongoing issues at the VA with accountability, information technology, staff training, ambiguous policies and cost efficiency. The VA should be put under careful surveillance by supervisory authorities. For a long time the federal government has not been able to organize the work of this problem agency. Liberals who controlled Washington for 8 years were quite miserable and worthless, they did not care not only about the fate of veterans, but also about the fate of all American patriots. Even after the veteran scandal of May 2014, the VA did not fix anything. Arguing, Bad, and Children: "Children who participate in play with The Elf on the Shelf doll have to contend with rules at all times during the day: they may not touch the doll, and they must accept that the doll watches them at all times with the purpose of reporting to Santa Claus." The Elf on the Shelf is preparing your child to live in a future police state, professor warns washingtonpost.com cornerof5thandvermouth: earthy-phoenix: drwhohipster: drst: mhalachai: rainnecassidy: This is such a good article though The argument Pinto makes is that the story and the doll normalize 24-hour surveillance in the mind of a child, which makes them susceptible to more passively accept police-state surveillance as adults. “I don’t think the elf is a conspiracy and I realize we’re talking about a toy,” Pinto told The Post. “It sounds humorous, but we argue that if a kid is okay with this bureaucratic elf spying on them in their home, it normalizes the idea of surveillance and in the future restrictions on our privacy might be more easily accepted.” It’s based in a theory that was developed by Jeremy Bentham and popularized by Michel Foucault in which students, prisoners, factory workers and others were thought to function better (for whatever value of better) in a system called a panopticon, in which an individual is potentially under surveillance 24-hours a day, but never actually KNOWS whether or not he or she is being surveilled.  Pinto said she’s not the first person to be troubled by Elf on the Shelf’s surveilling. She’s said parents routinely contact her to say they changed the rules of the game after it made their families uneasy. And many kids, she said, often intuitively feel like spying and being a tattletale is wrong. “A mom e-mailed me and told me that the first day they read the elf book and put the elf out, her daughter woke up crying because she was being watched by the elf,” Pinto recounted. “They changed the game so it wouldn’t scare the child.” In addition to the problem of normalizing surveillance in the mind of a child, this also forces the child into a situation where they never feel like they are free to simply be themselves; they are forced to be “on their best behavior” at all times, unable to relax and make mistakes and do the job of growing up and being a child, because they never know if the elf is spying on them, ready and waiting to report back to Santa Claus that they’ve been bad. Here is a link to the paper that the article is talking about My co-worker got Elf on the Shelf for her four-year-old daughter last year, and was so freaked out by her daughter’s sudden and complete change in behaviour (uncharacteristically worried and anxious, while trying to be on her ‘best’ behaviour that she never kept up for family or at school) that she stuffed Elf in the garbage after a week, telling the daughter that the Elf had to go back to the North Pole to help Santa with Christmas.  Also read the paper linked above, it’s a good one. I hate this entire concept so much. I hadn’t thought about that but the far reaching implications are horrifying Honestly what a creepy idea :\Kids do best when given basic human respect, which behavior-judging surveillance is unrelated to. Holy shit. i now feel much more justified thinking that fuckshit elf is creepy as fuck

Anaconda, Food, and Muslim: BRUSHING HARDER DOES NOT CLEAN BETTER dentagama1: When do we overbrush our teeth? 1. Brushing Too OftenIdeally your dentist wants you to brush three times a day, after every meal. At the very least professionals suggest you brush once after breakfast and once before bed. But what if you eat six small meals a day? Should you still brush after every meal and every snack and every sip of coffee? This is where misconceptions about brushing teeth start to arise. 2. Brushing Too VigorouslyMany dental patients attack their teeth with their toothbrushes, thinking they are getting rid of plaque hard and fast. But being over-zealous with your toothbrush does not remove any more plaque. Matter of fact, it starts harming the gum tissue and exposes the tooth root. Here the dentin is not protected by enamel, but rather a thin layer of cementum. Excessive or improper tooth brushing is liable to abrade these substances and do permanent damage.Right-handed patients tend to press harder when brushing the teeth on their left hand side. On the pictures you can see enamel lesions and gum recession caused by right-handed patients overbrushing their teeth. 3. Brushing With the Wrong ToothbrushPlaque is fairly soft. You could remove it with a damp cloth, if that could reach all the nooks and crannies where it hides. But once plaque hardens into calculus (tartar), the only way to remove it is with professional help from a dentist or hygienist. This is why there is not any extra benefit to using a hard bristle brush. The best manufactured toothbrushes have soft or medium nylon bristles. If you were to check these out under a microscope you would see they have rounded edges, instead of flat. This cuts down on the abrasiveness while still allowing the bristles to clean along the gumline and in the crevices of teeth. In some Muslim cultures it is highly recommended the use of a tree toothpick called miswak. It is even mentioned in their sacred book of Quran that the use of miswak ‘purifies the mouth’ and it is quoted by the Islamic prophet Muhammad himself. However, science has proven that the long term use of miswak can cause gum recession and abrasion lesions on the buccal surface of the teeth. 4. Brushing With the Wrong ToothpasteToothpastes contain minor abrasive substances to remove plaque and superficial stains from teeth. Under normal use, toothpaste helps clear away plaque and food particles, but leaves the enamel and dentin intact. Researchers say it would take 80 to 100 years to remove just 1mm of exposed dentin. Enamel, as a much harder substance, would remain intact. However, not all toothpastes are created equal, especially those you might make at home. Abnormal or abusive brushing with abrasive toothpastes might not have much effect on the enamel. But it could dramatically impact the soft tissue and any exposed dentin. 5. Brushing Too SoonAcid is the most harmful substance for the enamel. So if you brush right after having highly acidic foods or beverages, the enamel has not had enough time to naturally recover. It is more susceptible to damage caused by overbrushing. http://dentagama.com/news/why-overbrushing-your-teeth-can-be-dangerous
