Community, Doctor, and Family: Anti-vaxx mom abandons movement after all seven her of her kids get whooping cough 画20 TOM BOGGION O APR 2015 AT 16.00 E Smawa "6 Adrian Hareweo CKB Omawa mother Tara Hls CBC soreeshot hatey-mchaterson: timemachineyeah: a-spoon-is-born: funoftheday: You don’t say. For the record, she actually abandoned the movement BEFORE they all got whooping cough, but abandoned it too late. There’d been a breakout of measles in her area that caused her to reassess, and she and her doctor had already drafted and started a catch-up vaccination schedule, but her kids caught whooping cough just before it could be started. Then she wrote a blog post for The Scientific Parent explaining how she and her husband had come to wrong decisions in the first place, how they changed their mind, the consequences they suffered as a result, and asking other parents to please vaccinate their kids. And now she’s an activist for destroying the misinformation of anti-vaxxers, and reaching out to anti-vaxxers because she’s understands their fears but knows their kids deserve better.  She was trying to the best for her kids and just didn’t know how to interpret the validity of information or its sources, an actual skill that can be actually difficult and that is under-taught and a necessary first step to being able to trust vaccination research, so chose no action over taking an action she wasn’t sure of. She kept looking into it with family and friends and even eventually came to the right conclusion before her kids became sick, but it was still too late. Honestly it was pretty brave of her to publicly admit she was wrong. She could have just quietly vaccinated her kids and not become a national news story, but instead she spoke out, even saying “I’m writing this from quarantine, the irony of which isn’t lost on me.” and also “I am not looking forward to any gloating or shame as this ‘defection’ from the antivaxx camp goes public, but, this isn’t a popularity contest.  Right now my family is living the consequences of misinformation and fear.  I understand that families in our community may be mad at us for putting their kids at risk.” She understood the consequences and still put herself and her story out there.  You know what, it does take a big person to admit they were wrong so publicly and work to undo the harm. I believe I made fun of her in the past, but timemachineyeah changed my mind.

Anaconda, Apparently, and Children: BUSINESS INSIDER Migrant children say they've been forcibly drugged, handcuffed, and abused in US government detention Tara Francis Chan 9h Central American asylum-seekers wait as US Border Patrol agents take them into custody on June 12 near McAllen, Texas. John Moore/Getty Images BUSINESS INSIDER Migrant children who are considered unaccompanied minors and are in the care of the US government say they've been drugged and abused. * Court documents in a class-action lawsuit filed in April reveal shocking allegations that the children were overprescribed psychotropic drugs, leading to weight gain, an inability to walk, and forced sleep. Other children say they were abused verbally, physically, and mentally. * whyyoustabbedme: Children were not informed about what conditions they apparently had. “I don’t remember if I got anything in writing about their decision but I don’t think I had an opportunity to challenge it … I took nine pills in the morning and seven in the evening. I don’t know what medications I was taking; no one ever told me that. I don’t know what my diagnosis or illness is.” Physical force was used to administer drugs. “I also saw staff throw another youth to the ground, pry his mouth open and force him to take the medicine … They told me that if I did not take the medicine I could not leave, that the only way I could get out of Shiloh was if I took the pills.” Staff members initiated tranquilizations. “When [a staff member at Shiloh] would call the medical staff, they would come and give me a shot to tranquilize me. It happened many times. They would give me the shot and then I would start to feel sleepy and heavy, and like I didn’t have any strength. I would sleep for three or four hours and then wake up and slowly start to feel my strength return. When the staff did that, they left me in the classroom near the wall to sleep.” Children were verbally abused by staff to provoke a response. “Some of the staff at Shiloh would provoke the children there and make us angry intentionally. They made us act violently so then we had to be given shots. The staff would call us names like ‘sons of a whore.’” Some were unable to walk normally. “They are requiring [my daughter] to take very powerful medications for anxiety. I have noted that [she] is becoming more nervous, fearful, and she trembles. [She] tells me that she has fallen several times … because the medications were too powerful and she couldn’t walk.” Some children experienced unhealthy weight gain, including one who said they put on nearly 100 pounds. “After taking the medication, I was more tired, I felt sad and my eyes got teary … I began to gain a lot of weight … In approximately 60 days, I gained 45 pounds.” Some were handcuffed for days on end. “At Shenandoah, my room had a mattress, a sink, and a toilet … I was forced to wear handcuffs on my wrists and shackles on my feet for approximately 10 days in a row.” Children were allowed outside for only one hour a day. “I am suffering a lot being in the Yolo Juvenile Detention Center. It is a jail and I sleep in a locked, small jail cell. I can’t leave here and have no freedom at all. We only get one hour of time outside each day. I have to live in a small cell with concrete walls.” Clothes were taken away. “Whenever I was put in restriction, they took away my mattress and blanket. They took my clothes away about 8 times.” And these are just the children old enough to tell us.

America, Crazy, and Fila: The '90s Are Officially Back! Tamagotchi ls Making a Comeback @balleralert The ‘90s Are Officially Back! Tamagotchi Is Making a Comeback - blogged by @miss_binky ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Look around. Everywhere you go, it’s pretty obvious – the 90s are back and in full effect. So for a generation that’s re-embracing Tommy Hilfiger, FILA, and Super Nintendo, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to hear that the Tamagotchi is making a comeback too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That’s right, the Japanese “virtual pet” will hit store shelves again in November (just in time for the holidays). Originally released in 1997, the toy had millions of kids addicted to feeding and cleaning up the poop of a pixelated “pet,” and drove parents and teachers alike crazy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Surprisingly, the re-release of the Tamagotchi will not have any real tech upgrades. The only difference between the 2017 and 1997 version is that it will be about 20% smaller. Bandai America, the company behind the toy, is banking on the love of nostalgia to fuel sales of the virtual pet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to marketing director, Tara Badie: “For many Generation X kids, the Tamagotchi device can be considered America’s first and favorite digital pet. The enduring power of Tamagotchi is its clear expression that nurturing and love never goes out of style.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So the question is, will kids raised on smartphones and iPads see the allure in a colorless, pixelated blob the same we we did in the 90s?
