Jay-Z and Roc Nation to Invest $3 Million in App That Combats Mass Incarceration-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Jay-Z and Roc Nation will reportedly make a $3 million investment in an app called Promise, that combats mass incarceration. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ According to the website, the app was created by Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins and Diana Frappier to “get people out of jail and provide ongoing support and supervision to help keep them out.” The hope is that the platform will exist as an alternative to incarcerating individuals who cannot afford bail or who miss court dates by mistake. It will provide services to users that will help them log upcoming court dates, counseling appointments, and drug tests. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ When it comes to rehabilitation, Promise plans to provide programs to users that assist with job training and getting information about housing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ As a rapper, Jay-Z has used his platform to consistently speak about how the jail system is designed to fail those of low class and people of color. Last year the rapper wrote an opinion piece on Father’s Day about the exploitative bail industry. For many individuals, they are jailed due to their inability to afford bail, despite not being convicted of crimes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ During an interview with TechCrunch, Ellis-Lamkins spoke on the small infractions that lead to many people of color ending up behind bars. “People are going to jail because they look at a piece of paper and misread it, or are going to jail because they can’t afford a class because they’re instead paying child support. If we’re putting people in jail because they’re poor, brown or black, we’re spending money the wrong way.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ “We are increasingly alarmed by the injustice in our criminal justice system,” Jay-Z said in a statement confirming his involvement with the app. “Money, time and lives are wasted with the current policies. It’s time for an innovative and progressive technology that offers sustainable solutions to tough problems. Promise’s team, led by Phaedra, is building an app that can help provide ‘liberty and justice for all’ to millions.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀: Jay-Z and Roc Nation to Invest $3 Million in App That Combats Mass Incarceration @balleralert Jay-Z and Roc Nation to Invest $3 Million in App That Combats Mass Incarceration-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Jay-Z and Roc Nation will reportedly make a $3 million investment in an app called Promise, that combats mass incarceration. Hypersonic Jet Could Take You From Beijing to NYC in Just Two Hours-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ A group of scientists in China are now looking to build a hypersonic plane that would reportedly make trips from Beijing to New York City, only two hours long instead of the normal almost 14-hour flight. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ To shorten the length of the trip, the plane would have to travel at more than 5 times the speed of sound. According to Newsweek, scientists at the Chinese Academy of Sciences are the ones responsible for the new aircraft design, which has been dubbed ‘I-plane’. They revealed details about the hypersonic jet in a paper published in the journal Physics, Mechanics, & Astronomy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ While the project is only in the beginning stages, the authors have already begun testing a smaller version of the jet in a wind tunnel. Through testing, they found that the jet was able to hit high speeds without experiencing any oppositional force. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ “It’s a crazy design, but somehow they’ve managed to make it work,” said one Chinese aircraft designer, who currently works on military research projects, to the South China Morning Post. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ He also mentioned that the new design is connected to the country’s hope to develop new strategic weapons before the United States. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ “This will require original rather than knock-off designs,” he told the publication. “It could lead to a huge step forward in hypersonic technology.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ In the United States, similar aircrafts have also been in the works. In January, Boeing showcased their hypersonic vehicle design that could “pave the way for a future high-speed strike,” according to Aviation Week. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ What do you think about this new creation?: Hypersonic Jet Could Take You From Beijing to NYC in Just Two Hours @balleralert Hypersonic Jet Could Take You From Beijing to NYC in Just Two Hours-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ A group of scientists in China are now looking to build a hypersonic plane that would reportedly make trips from Beijing to New York City, only two hours long instead of the normal almost 14-hour flight. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ To shorten the length of the trip, the plane would have to travel at more than 5 times the speed of sound. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ What do you think about this new creation?

Meek Mill Granted Post Conviction Hearing-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Rapper Meek Mill has officially been granted a post-conviction hearing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ The same judge who previously sentenced him to two to four years for a probation violation, Judge Genece Brinkley of the Common Pleas Court, has now granted the Philly native a post-conviction hearing due to possible corruption of Meek’s original 2008 case. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ According to previous reports, the rapper’s original 2007 arrest may have involved some corruption as well, and on Feb.14, his attorneys filed a Post-Conviction Relief Act petition concerning his original arrest. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office has a secret list of suspect police officers who are not deemed as credible witnesses, one of them being Reginald Graham, a testifying officer in Meek’s 2008 trial. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ The post-conviction hearing has been scheduled to determine what really happened with Meek’s case. His lawyer is confident that the hearing will result in him being released. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ “I mean, there were 800 cases that were dismissed or overturned upon discovery of this group of officers who had been committing crimes, lying about circumstances of arrests, and falsifying documents,” his lawyer said. “One of the officers is the same one who not only arrested Meek but made allegations that Meek has always denied. Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan Looking to Bring The Story of Mansa Musa to Life-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ With the success of their first three projects: “Fruitvale Station,” “Creed” and “Black Panther”, super Director Ryan Coogler and Hollywood Star Michael B. Jordan are already teaming up for more projects. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ According to multiple reports, the duo is now looking to start a project centered around the life of Mansa Musa. Both Coogler and Jordan feel it is important to create influential films that reflect the Black community and the contributions that have been made throughout history. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ “You got to tell stories in today, or in the future,” says Jordan. “Or can we go back even further? There’s always one period that people want to go back to, but can we go back to Hannibal? Or Mansa Musa, destroying economies as he traveled? Can we go back to the Egyptians?” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Mansa Musa was an influential African ruler in the fourteenth century. He was emperor of the Mali Empire, a land filled with gold, which he casually handed out during his religious expedition to Mecca, ultimately causing economic crises to cities that were unfamiliar with such wealth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ In 1324, Musa became the first Muslim ruler to trek almost four-thousand-miles. During his travels, he encountered rulers of the Middle East and Europe, which helped to put Mali on European maps. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ He helped improve Islamic education and he also brought back government bureaucrats and architects. With the development of mosques and a major university, the city of Timbuktu became more urbanized. Musa ruled for 25 years and during that time, Western Africa was said to be at peace. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ While there is no word on when this project will take off, the duo is already in pre-production for another film titled “Wrong Answer,” about a 2006 standardized testing scandal in Atlanta. Baller Alert’s Today in Hip-Hop: Kanye West Released ‘The College Dropout’ 14 Years Ago-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ On Feb. 10, 2004, Kanye West released his debut studio album ‘The College Dropout’ on Roc-A-Fella Records and Def Jam Recordings. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ From 1999 to the year of its release, West spent years working on the project. While working on the album, West had already established himself as a producer having done production for artists such as Jay-Z and Talib Kweli. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Doing his own production, West created a masterpiece. Not only did he develop a new sound nicknamed “chipmunk soul," where he took R&B and Soul samples and sped them up, but his lyricism also introduced us to a new style. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ While many rappers of the time maintained the gangsta rap style we were used to, West instead introduced us to the story of the average joe who questions family, religion, politics, and more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ The singles from the album, "Through the Wire" and "Jesus Walks", were both critically acclaimed, while “All Falls Down" and "Slow Jamz" charted in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Upon its release, the album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart having sold 441,000 copies in the first week. ‘The College Dropout’ received phenomenal reviews from multiple publications and even earned West 10 Grammy nominations. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Multiple publications such as Time and Rolling Stone have named it one of the greatest albums of all time.: Baller Alert's Today in Hip-Hop: Kanye West Released 'The College Dropout' 14 Years Ago @balleralert DD PARENTAL ADVISORY EXPLICIT CONTENT Baller Alert’s Today in Hip-Hop: Kanye West Released ‘The College Dropout’ 14 Years Ago-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ On Feb. Petition Asks Marvel to Invest 25% of “Black Panther” Profits into the Black Community-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ As one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, “Black Panther” is expected to break some box office records and bring in millions. But now a petition has begun to have part of the profits be invested in the Black community. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ A petition on Change.org is asking Marvel to invest 25 percent of the profits into Black communities. Creator of the petition, Chaz Gormley wrote, "Through a clever, well-manufactured marketing campaign Marvel Studios and their parent company The Walt Disney Company have targeted the Black community with their advertisements for the upcoming Black Panther film, due to release on February 16, 2018. As marginalized groups have become more vocal, corporations and their savvy public relations departments have turned to catering to these groups - to turn a profit - and this film by Marvel Studios is no different." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Gormley also notes Marvel’s obvious appeals to the black community such as the film being released during Black History Month and Gil Scott-Heron's ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’ playing in the film's initial trailer. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ The petition is asking those in the Black community to regain their power and demand that Marvel and its parent company, Disney, invest profits back into the community that is most connected with the film and have been faced with “police brutality and substandard living conditions." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ "You have the ability to not only be entertained but to leave the theater in February knowing that a portion of your money will be coming back into your community" Gormley adds. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ "To not only go see a film about a fictitious country in Africa with advanced technology but the opportunity to invest in programs which focus on the fields - Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics - that make such advancements possible, in real life.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ What do you think about this idea?: Petition Asks Marvel to Invest 25% of "Black Panther" Profits into the Black Community @balleralert Petition Asks Marvel to Invest 25% of “Black Panther” Profits into the Black Community-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ As one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, “Black Panther” is expected to break some box office records and bring in millions.
