 treatments are effective, a lifetime of toxic drugs are required to prevent its
 recurrence. But researchers from Temple University may have figured out a way to
 permanently excise it using a highly-engineered HIV "editor." Here's how it works: the
 team analyzed a part of our immune system that fights infection and built a "guide
 RNA" strand consisting of 20 nucleotides (RNA building blocks). Those strands were
 then injected into cells typically infected with HIV, like T-cells. There, they targeted
 the end parts of the virus's gene and snipped out all 9,709 nucleotides that made up
 its genome. Since the guide RNA strand contained no human DNA sequences, it left
 the host cell intact- but free from HIV

100 Women: The artist redrawing ‘sexist’ comic book covers



An artist in India is challenging sexist drawings of women in comic books by parodying them using male heroes in poses typically associated with women.
She-Hulk has superhuman strength and speed and is one of the most formidable hand-to-hand combatants in the Marvel world.
Like Hulk, not only does she have physical power, she’s also completely green.
Yet, on a 1991 comic book cover, she is shown in a seductive pose, wearing a G-string bikini, with her curves sharply accentuated.
Indian artist Shreya Arora was shocked when she saw the image.
“For Hulk, the visual representation focuses on his strength. For She-Hulk, all we see is an emphasis on sexuality,” says Arora, who grew up reading comic books.
The 21-year-old graphic designer decided she wanted to flip the narrative.



Why is depicting women as sexy considered sexist? 

The irony, of course, is that there already was a Spider-Man cover like that second one.
Also, this is literally judging a book by its cover. Heck, you’re even ignoring the 

self-aware speech bubble. The book actually starts with She-Hulk on a beach, so the cover is actually appropriate to the contents. And can I just-

Yes, clearly we needed a view of Tony’s skintight bodysuit.
This is doing the same thing as the Hawkeye Initiative. It’s not clever or original.

There are blogs I’d expect to caption a Spiderman picture with “LOOK AT SPIDEY’S CROTCH. LOOK AT IT. LOOK AT IT.” and then there is this blog. Guess I was wrong.

The artist also completely failed to get the joke: 
August, 1991, Demi Moore appears on the cover of “Vanity Fair” magazine, nude and pregnant. It caused quite an outrage, but the controversy lead to increased sales.
In December of the same year, Marvel decided to riff on that idea, showing She-Hulk in the same pose, with a beach ball instead of a pregnant belly. She even says, “It’s not FAIR to accuse me of VANITY“, a not-so-subtle nod to the famous magazine cover.
tl;dr: Artist is offended by someone else’s work, not understanding anything about the history or concept behind the artwork.


I’m usually here for pointing out that men can be sexualized like women but wow you guys really chose the wrong thing to argue with. Sure, Spidey has a nice crotch and Tony is in a bodysuit, but I do really need to point out that not all of these comics are even from the same era? Using Civil War II is ridiculous considering it came out only two years when others are over two decades older. Also, trying to say that the She-Hulk cover is a simple nod could be acceptable if they didn’t do this for every single  issue of The Sensational She-Hulk. Even a quick Google search will show that they tried to sell the the comics with sex appeal and She-Hulk admitting that doesn’t make it any better.

That Spidey web-ball cover is from 2000 or so. She-hulk is from 1991.So, even if I give you the whopping two years between the Spider-Woman cover and Civil War 2, OP’s range still covers the time period of that Spidey cover.But in the interests of fairness, lets take a gander at 90s Iron Man.Look at that cyber-bulge and those cyber-abs.Also, trying to say that the She-Hulk cover is a simple nod could be acceptable if they didn’t do this for every single issue of The Sensational She-Hulk. You mean the light-hearted, self-aware comic where the fanservice is clearly a joke, and the character still has choice and agency? How does that represent all female-led comics? At least if they had used a few Catwoman Jim Balent covers, they might’ve had some ground, seeing as he actually seems to have a thing for leather, latex, and lace. Of course, these days Shulk has more conventional covers, which explains why the artist had to go back 25+ years to find them.Also, are you absolutely sure it’s every issue?Every single one?Wow, Electro is ripped here. I don’t need to explain the Bugs Bunny ref, do I?This isn’t even an actual comic cover, it’s Frank Cho fanart. If there’s so much actual examples, why is she using a non-cover? The parody artist even admits she’s focusing on the visuals.

Not to mention that the Renaissance standard of female beauty being plumpness and full-figured forms came from the fact that it was a status symbol. Plump, pale, full-figured women were wealthy women who didn’t have to spend their days in hard labor or raising children (or both) and stood a better chance of bearing healthy babies than commoner women did.

Cultural “Oh Snap” I hate it so much when people pull out the “unhealthy” excuse for having a reason to body shame a person.

Okay that one response was dumb but first of all there’s absolutely no way the woman in that painting is 190-200 lbs unless she’s on the taller side. Yeah Renaissance women were full-figured but they weren’t obese.Secondly, it was a beauty standard because it was a sign you were rich enough to eat a lot and not have to work off the extra calories. So it wasn’t that women typically looked like that, it was an equally unrealistic standard back then as it is today because most women didn’t have the means to put on extra weight unless they were filthy rich. But hey let’s glorify beauty standards when it personally benefits you, right?Third, you’re really gonna put someone down for body-shaming when the woman painting is also body-shaming? Anorexia is a mental disorder not a body type and if you conflate the two you’re body-shaming. Using “anorexic” as a synonym for “skinny” is basically the same as using “diabetic” as a synonym for “fat.”So in conclusion, this whole post is garbage.

People tended to use less seasoning back ghen because food was bred and grown differently. Things like chicken and beef had way more natural flavor, so additional seasonings werent really needed. In fact, for some places, seasonings were typically used by the poor, who were left with bad tasting scraps. Other places had them solely for the rich, since non native spices were incredibly expensive. 
Just like with Japanese culture, food culture in European cultures are often rely on tradition. Traditional methods are used, even if obsolete from newly available ingredients. It’s why old traditional methods of wine and cheese making are still used today. In fact, simple flavors and limited seasonings are available in a large amount of African dishes. The whole “white people dont season their food” stereotype originated in the US, and is clearly wrong, since European immigrants brought over tons of well seasoned and loved food like pizza, sausages, gyros, literally a ton of well known french dishes. I mean most southern cuisine came from French immigrants, and African slaves and paid servants (who at the time didnt even have access to most spices) simply copied those. The only real nuance is the addition of peppers and things like nutmeg and corn (originating in the americas) which European immigrants had already been using in their recipes. ( Actual soul food that can be entirely credited to African Americans is limited). 
The point is that the caricature of white people’s cooking being unseasoned is a very real part of reality for other cultures. Japan prides its traditional food with simplistic flavors. As in minimal or no seasoning. So any mocking you have for white people, equally (if not moreso) applies to the Japanese. You clearly don’t think it’s okay to say these same things to Asians, so it is clear that it isnt the action itself that you have a problem with, but the race doing it.

It’s really odd that you would compare any country’s use of spice to India’s. Essentially anyone’s would use less spice in comparison. It just shows that you really dont understand how these things work.

I love that there are people sharing this who might not realize there is literally an episode where a fucking toothpick was the culprit. 

On the flip side of that example I remember an episode where House was convinced a womans condition was being caused by a tick, but repeated searches of her body found none, until towards the end of the episode where he was like “theres one place we havnt looked..” and he pulled out a tick hanging around her snatch.

Didn’t he basically steal that patient and snatch the bug out of her cootch when they were trapped in an elevator together? The only reason he didn’t get charged with sexual assault, have his medical license set ablaze, and get locked in jail for the rest of his life was because it happened to be the right guess and House rarely faces any sort of serious consequences for utterly outrageous behavior 😂

There’s actually an entire episodes that revolves around the consequences of letting him do that sort of stuff because he’s usually right. Cuddy almost lets a suicidally depressed man who’s basically locked into his body go without treatment to drive that in to House.
That’s why I said “rarely“. There are some episodes that go for high drama, like the one you mentioned or the one where Wilson’s girlfriend dies. But in most day-to-day episodes he does things no doctor would ever do without being litigated to hell and back. All while Cuddy reprimands him with her tits hanging out, which as we all know is how hospital directors typically dress. <p>Like that right there <b><i>on top of</i> </b>the aesthetic Jewish-coding is what pushed the antisemitic caricature over the top for me.  It harkens back to antisemitic blood libel that claimed that Jews stole gentile children for all manner of nefarious reasons. Even when Gothel is in “mother” role to Rapunzel, she’s is shown as nagging and passive aggressive, both antisemitic stereotypes of Jewish women.</p>
<p><b>There is no one thing that makes her an antisemitic caricature, but the design, plus the storyline she plays out, plus her characterization cement the overall character as antisemitic.  </b></p>
<p>Jew-coding a villain is not in itself always antisemitic when there are also Jewish coded <b>heroes</b>. Rapunzel does not have that.</p>
<p>Having a villain steal a baby for magical/ritualistic reasons is not always antisemitic as long as the villain is not Jew-coded.  Rapunzel fails this as well.</p>
<p>Having a nagging and passive aggressive mother character is not antisemitic provided that she is not, again, coded as Jewish.  Rapunzel fails once again.</p>

<p><b>Let’s play a game I like to call: <i>Movie Villain or Antisemitic Propaganda:</i></b></p>

<p>One big issue I have is that Gothel’s didn’t start out as the antisemitic caricature that made it to screen.  Much of the early concept art has a more dark romanticism feel.  </p>

<p>It really doesn’t matter if any of this was intentional, I’d actually bet that it wasn’t.  However, antisemitic tropes are so engrained in our societies that people like you, even when confronted with a step by step break down of what it is, feel comfortable thinking that there’s nothing wrong with it and mocking those calling it out as if we are overreacting.</p>
<p>You seem to have completely ignored the majority of my post.  It is the character design, plus the characterization, plus the story line that mirrors blood libel that makes Gothel an antisemitic character. <b> It’s not just about someone of a certain race or ethnicity being a villain.  It’s about how stereotypes of a certain ethnic group are understood as “villainous” due to villains being repeatedly coded as Jewish over decades of film and tv.</b></p>
<p>And contrary to your naive belief, all media is political to some extent. Every time a historically present minority is not included in film (ex: lily-white Harlem in Fantastical Beasts) or when a minority character is whitewashed, or when the “ethnic” features of a minority are used almost universally to portray bad guys, it is a political and social issue.  <b>When you never see yourselves as the people who play the hero or even see your people existing in a portrayal of a place where they should be, it is not benign.</b></p>

<p>I’m not Jewish, but I can imagine seeing yourself villanized again and again must wear on you so hard (like queer coded villains do on me). The stereotypes are so insidious, I didn’t even realize she was Jewish coded until I saw this post for the first time, and since then I’ve been able to pick up on more anti-semitic media.</p>

<p>Also, they only compared Mother Gothel to other Disney protags rather than other Disney villains or even Disney characters who are older. Disney typically uses very angular features to convey villains. </p>

They’re picking out things that <i>could be</i> Jewish features or stereotypes and then saying that they are. </p>
<p>“She’s greedy and evil” and so are pretty much all other Disney Villains. Ya know… gotta be evil to be a villain. Dr. Faciler, Gaston, The Evil Queen, Maleficent, Jafar, Scar… need I list more villains? Being evil and greedy =/= being jewish coded because evil and greedy are common traits of villains, <i>even within </i><br/></p>
<p>“She has dark curly hair” so does Esmeralda and Moana. <br/></p>
<p>“Hooked nose.” her nose isn’t even hooked. It’s flat, similar to Maleficent’s. Anytime someone’s head is bent or leaning forward, naturally, their nose will appear more hooked. that’s just anatomy. That happens to <i>everyone</i>. Hell, you can even see in the images <i>her nose isn’t hooked</i>. <br/></p>
<p>If you can’t tell the difference between a Jewish caricature and Mother Gothel, then I think that’s a you problem. Stereotypes are not exclusive to one group. In fact, implying that is <i>even more racist and anti-semitic </i>than the character. </p>
<p>Hell, in fact, prior to the 20th century, <i>red curly hair</i> was associated with Jewish people. So by that logic, Merida must be Jewish coded… but because she is <i>good</i> and looks like a Disney protag, she <i>can’t</i> be Jewish coded because she doesn’t have enough “Jewish stereotypes”. </p>
<p>The stereotype of Jewish people being greedy originates from when Jewish people were legally restricted to being usurers… Which is where the stereotype comes from. However, even in Jewish religion and mythology, greed, as in any other religion, is often portrayed as a negative or bad trait. </p>
<p>The irony is that they can only see Jewish stereotypes in <i>villainous characters</i> but can’t see any in the protagonists or heroes.</p>

<p>Merida has curly red hair, which was a Jewish stereotype before the 10th century. If we’re going this loosely based on stereotypes, you can even argue that Queen Eleanor is “Jewish-coded” because she is nagging, protective, and motherly. Ya know, the Jewish mother/wife stereotype. </p>
<p>So you have two arguably Jewish-coded heroines and protags yet no one can see the Jewish stereotypes in them because they are <i>the good guys</i>. Or because they don’t have <i>certain</i> Jewish stereotypes.</p>
<p>The thing is, stereotypes, are not all inherently bad, or rather, not all stereotypes are negative. Not all stereotypes originate from oppressors or people that are anti-semitic, racist, etc. Some stereotypes are often used as stock characters by people of a race or culture. Not every stereotype is exclusive to Jewish people either or even originates with anti-semitism. </p>
<p>If you can <i>only</i> see yourself in villains then maybe it’s you rather than the creators or characters. You literally picked the bare minimum and made a mountain out of an ant hill.</p>

<p>Lisa Edelstein is Jewish.  As are Idina Menzel and Amy Winehouse, both of whom I have seen compared in looks to Gothel.  Gothel’s design is a pretty clear caricature of ethnically Jewish women.  </p>
<hr><p>This is a pretty good contrast between Rapunzel and Gothel.  <b><i>Rapunzel</i></b> has the “typical Disney face”:</p>

<p>Like that right there <b><i>on top of</i> </b>the aesthetic Jewish-coding is what pushed the antisemitic caricature over the top for me.  It harkens back to antisemitic blood libel that claimed that Jews stole gentile children for all manner of nefarious reasons. Even when Gothel is in “mother” role to Rapunzel, she’s is shown as nagging and passive aggressive, both antisemitic stereotypes of Jewish women.</p>
<p><b>There is no one thing that makes her an antisemitic caricature, but the design, plus the storyline she plays out, plus her characterization cement the overall character as antisemitic.  </b></p>
<p>Jew-coding a villain is not in itself always antisemitic when there are also Jewish coded <b>heroes</b>. Rapunzel does not have that.</p>
<p>Having a villain steal a baby for magical/ritualistic reasons is not always antisemitic as long as the villain is not Jew-coded.  Rapunzel fails this as well.</p>
<p>Having a nagging and passive aggressive mother character is not antisemitic provided that she is not, again, coded as Jewish.  Rapunzel fails once again.</p>

<p>Jewish people don’t get that.  When we are portrayed in live action, our characters are more often than not whitewashed and in other media, our features are used and caricaturized to create “evil looking” villains.</p>
<p>You don’t see it because you’ve been ingrained with the idea that “ethnic” features are just “how you make a character look evil.”  You don’t look at Gothel and see your mother.  You don’t see yourself and your people.  You don’t see decades of propaganda aimed at fostering hate against you and ultimately seeking to destroy you.  </p>

<p>One big issue I have is that Gothel’s didn’t start out as the antisemitic caricature that made it to screen.  Much of the early concept art has a more dark romanticism feel.  </p>

<p>It really doesn’t matter if any of this was intentional, I’d actually bet that it wasn’t.  However, antisemitic tropes are so engrained in our societies that people like you, even when confronted with a step by step break down of what it is, feel comfortable thinking that there’s nothing wrong with it and mocking those calling it out as if we are overreacting.</p>
<p>You seem to have completely ignored the majority of my post.  It is the character design, plus the characterization, plus the story line that mirrors blood libel that makes Gothel an antisemitic character. <b> It’s not just about someone of a certain race or ethnicity being a villain.  It’s about how stereotypes of a certain ethnic group are understood as “villainous” due to villains being repeatedly coded as Jewish over decades of film and tv.</b></p>

<p>“She’s greedy and evil” and so are pretty much all other Disney Villains. Ya know… gotta be evil to be a villain. Dr. Faciler, Gaston, The Evil Queen, Maleficent, Jafar, Scar… need I list more villains? Being evil and greedy =/= being jewish coded because evil and greedy are common traits of villains, <i>even within </i><br/></p>
<p>“She has dark curly hair” so does Esmeralda and Moana. <br/></p>
<p>“Hooked nose.” her nose isn’t even hooked. It’s flat, similar to Maleficent’s. Anytime someone’s head is bent or leaning forward, naturally, their nose will appear more hooked. that’s just anatomy. That happens to <i>everyone</i>. Hell, you can even see in the images <i>her nose isn’t hooked</i>. <br/></p>
<p>If you can’t tell the difference between a Jewish caricature and Mother Gothel, then I think that’s a you problem. Stereotypes are not exclusive to one group. In fact, implying that is <i>even more racist and anti-semitic </i>than the character. </p>
<p>Hell, in fact, prior to the 20th century, <i>red curly hair</i> was associated with Jewish people. So by that logic, Merida must be Jewish coded… but because she is <i>good</i> and looks like a Disney protag, she <i>can’t</i> be Jewish coded because she doesn’t have enough “Jewish stereotypes”. </p>
<p>The stereotype of Jewish people being greedy originates from when Jewish people were legally restricted to being usurers… Which is where the stereotype comes from. However, even in Jewish religion and mythology, greed, as in any other religion, is often portrayed as a negative or bad trait. </p>
<p>The irony is that they can only see Jewish stereotypes in <i>villainous characters</i> but can’t see any in the protagonists or heroes.</p>

<p>Merida has curly red hair, which was a Jewish stereotype before the 10th century. If we’re going this loosely based on stereotypes, you can even argue that Queen Eleanor is “Jewish-coded” because she is nagging, protective, and motherly. Ya know, the Jewish mother/wife stereotype. </p>
<p>So you have two arguably Jewish-coded heroines and protags yet no one can see the Jewish stereotypes in them because they are <i>the good guys</i>. Or because they don’t have <i>certain</i> Jewish stereotypes.</p>
<p>The thing is, stereotypes, are not all inherently bad, or rather, not all stereotypes are negative. Not all stereotypes originate from oppressors or people that are anti-semitic, racist, etc. Some stereotypes are often used as stock characters by people of a race or culture. Not every stereotype is exclusive to Jewish people either or even originates with anti-semitism. </p>
<p>If you can <i>only</i> see yourself in villains then maybe it’s you rather than the creators or characters. You literally picked the bare minimum and made a mountain out of an ant hill.</p>

<p>I agree that rights shouldn’t have to be legitimized because they are simply rights. But it is nice to argue against the asinine “you don’t need that gun for that thing!” argument that’s almost always from people who don’t know shit about guns to begin with.
