Selena had been attracted to the motel by SaldĂvar, who had bought a gun after being accused by the Quintanilla family of having embezzled more than $60,000 that she stole from Selena’s fan club and boutiques. After being shot on the right shoulder, Selena still managed to escape to the motel lobby, leaving a trail of blood behind. There the singer named SaldĂvar as her assailant and confirmed the number of the room where she was staying at. After 50 minutes of surgery at the Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital, Selena was pronounced dead, her cause of death being blood loss and cardiac arrest. Meanwhile SaldĂvar had tried to escape the motel but a police officer noticed her and ordered SaldĂvar to get out of the truck she was driving. She parked and pointed the gun she had earlier used to shoot the singer at her temple, threatening to commit suicide. After more than nine hours of negotiations SaldĂvar finally surrendered. On October 23, 1995, Yolanda SaldĂvar was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years. SaldĂvar is currently serving her sentence at the Mountain View Unit in Gatesville, Texas, where she is in complete isolation due to the multiple death threats she has received from Selena fans who are in the same prison. Selena’s murder caused a wave of shock in the Hispanic community, the singer who was adored by millions became a pop culture icon after her death.

( Pictured: The singer, Selena, during a concert and her murderer, Yolanda SaldĂvar. )

Fun fact: Selena Gomez is named after her.
